Betting gamble
Massive betting gamble going on with a series of trebles being backed, bookies stand to lose tens of millions if Gallaghers cross wins the 4.25 at Musselburgh today.. First two won at odds on but the gamblers had taken odds of 40/1 and 9/1 on them..
Love a good betting coup so hope the last one comes in..

Re: Betting gamble
I wondered why the odds were so short on Gallaghers Cross.

Bookies Must have paid the jockey off.
Re: Betting gamble
One of the best oh-so-near betting coups was at Cartmel in the days before mobile phones. The trainer had a sure thing going (which trotted up successfully, no problem there) but to avoid alerting the bookies he got his team to back it in trebles with two of his other horses. The other two horses never left the stables, and by the time the bookies realised they had a huge gamble on this long odds horse in Cartmel, the trainer had put two of his heavies occupying and using the two payphones in Cartmel racecourse. The bookies' runners couldn't get through - they would have been told to back this horse and shorten its odds.
As I said, the horse trotted up, but the bookies wouldn't pay up - and got away with it. The point being that the other two horses never left the stable. If the trainer had sent them off and then had a "flat tyre" or "engine failure", or any other believable reason why they hadn't got there, then nothing else could have been proved. One little detail ...

For anyone interested I think this is what DSR is referring to and obviously the full story has a bit more to it and makes for a good read as DSR alludes

Re: Betting gamble
There was one in Ireland in the Seventies. An owner bought a horse and told the trainer to race it for a specific race at a course out in the sticks. The horse ran in a couple of unsuitable warm up races to make sure it went off at a good price. Bookies all over Ireland saw massive bets made but they couldn't check with the course because one of the 2 phonelines had 'broken ' and the other ( a phonebox) was occupied by someone having a long chat with his gran.
