Mike Dean sent death threats
Mike Dean has been sent death threats to his family home and as a result he won't be refereeing games this week.

Is this because of the sending off at the weekend?

Re: Mike Dean sent death threats
It's horrendous. In my view he got that decision horribly wrong, aided and abetted by Lee Mason without whom there would have been no red card. But social media and now death threats? Something has to be done.RalphCoatesComb wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:50 amI'd be the first to criticise his performances and poor decisions but, death threats? This is football for goodness sake! A lot of /r/soccer has a hate-boner for Dean at the moment. Wouldn't put it past a brain donor off there to send him a death threat or three.

Re: Mike Dean sent death threats
Not at all condoning the death threats. It puts us in a league with South America. But if that red card is rescinded by the FA, they can take a look back at Burnley’s game with Leeds and disallow Bamford’s goal, overturn Mee’s yellow card and either allow Barnes’ goal to stand or give us a penalty.
Re: Mike Dean sent death threats
A great lad, is Mike Dean.
Hope it hasn’t affected him too much. Best ref by a country mile and we need him out there on the field every week. Just a shame he can only do 1 game per round of fixtures as some of his colleagues are dross.

Agreed....very good Referee.

This just highlights the mindset of some people today. Much of the blame lies with social media.

Absolutely horrendous, Dean has had a bad week heavily aided and abetted by Mason of that there is no doubt, but death threats, wtf. Its about time these type of threats were taken as intent and dealt with accordingly.
FWIW I still think Mike Dean is the best around

Re: Mike Dean sent death threats
Let's be real here. The standard of refereeing in this country is shocking, and that includes Mike Dean. However, it's vile that people think it's acceptable to send out death threats.

Mike Dean may be the best around, yet his decision making processes, and those of his colleagues need to be retrained. As with Salah's successful penalty dive, they are punishing fair play and endorsing cheating.

Re: Mike Dean sent death threats
Totally unacceptable and absolutely vile. I would not blame the referees at all if they all down tools for a round of games in support of Mike Dean. The threats themselves are a sad indictment of both trial by media of referees and the less savoury aspects of social media. I hope the perpetrators are brought to book.

It doesn't really surprise me when you look at this messageboard that is well moderated and pretty sensible and see how angry and worked up posters get at controversial decisions that dont go our way.
Even on this thread some people cant even manage to condemn this behaviour without having to have a pop at referees

Totally avoidable....Mason should never have asked Dean to have a look...he lacked the balls to make the decision and heaped pressure on Dean to send him off,Mitrovic & Mason don't come out of this well...Mason is a dick,Mitrovic is a cheat.

Usually the referee is the only honest man on the pitch, but one genuine mistake and they are hammered from pillar to post.
Until the FA/powers that be start really clamping down on simulation diving etc. the refs job is only going to get harder.
Cheating in almost any other profession usually results in suspension and being struck off the register.

Re: Mike Dean sent death threats
Who’s sending death threats for a 90th minute red card in a game you’ve drawn with your team sitting comfortably in the table in February.
I mean sending one after a controversial decision that gets your club relegated would be completely ridiculous but this??
Who are these people.

Re: Mike Dean sent death threats
Wow! Death threats for a sporting official. Your neck hurts with the amount of shaking of your head it makes you do. Just shows how far out of touch the game of football is getting from its origins.
On another note, Mike Dean shouldn't be officiating for a few weeks anyway after getting 2 high profile decisions wrong over his last 2 games. The Southampton sending off and now the West Ham sending off are as about as poor as it gets. If he's the best in the country god help us. How can the perceived best league in the world have such poor officials? These are the guys who are meant to know the rules and how to apply them. Are the rules far to complicated for a human to process them and apply them at the speed the game is played?

Anyone remember John Bond getting threats from Burnley "fans" and as a result he couldn't return to Turf Moor when managing the opposing side?

No. It was Bond's decision not to return but there was never any evidence of any threats as far as I know.TheOriginalLongsider wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 2:17 pmAnyone remember John Bond getting threats from Burnley "fans" and as a result he couldn't return to Turf Moor when managing the opposing side?

Re: Mike Dean sent death threats
Referees are not respected. There are endemic flaws in the officiating of football that are the cause. Compare the way football referees are viewed relative to those in rugby.
The way laws are allowed to be flouted or ignored, and the fact that players continually undermine the referees authority means officials are always the scapegoats.

However useless we think Referee's are these "social media warriors" need to be rooted out and dealt with firmly through the courts. The accounts aren't anonymous to the platform providers.

No surprise really and that is the sad part, we have become desensitised to abuse on Social Media. To the point where we shrug our shoulders and wait for the next one, the recent abuse directed at predominantly black footballers for having the temerity to make a mistake or an error by a referee shouldn’t be cause for abuse, but is now becoming the norm rather than the exception.

Yes remember him saying he got threats from Burnley fans and then he went to the replay disguised as a steward when he was manager of Shrewsbury.TheOriginalLongsider wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 2:17 pmAnyone remember John Bond getting threats from Burnley "fans" and as a result he couldn't return to Turf Moor when managing the opposing side?

First step in making social media "sociable" as opposed to "anti-social" is to have everyone posting identifiable by their own names. Yes, allow "nick names" but make sure that anyone who wants to know can see who the person is behind the "nick name."

Apologies Ben I thought that was what I had said as well, we played them in the cup here and he didn’t come because of the threats and then in the replay at Shrewsbury was in his disguise as a steward.

He claimed there were threats but no one could provide any evidence. In truth, I think he was given advice to stay away. He did then sit at the back of the stand in a steward's coat for the replay.

I read a very interesting piece in The Athletic about social media and the potential perils of making people use identifiable handles, quoted below, which I hadn't even considered.
It's a very difficult one and I'm not sure how to solve it.Anonymity has been a valuable tool for people protesting against their governments, and LGBT people in repressive regimes. Dance notes that in countries where governments monitor internet usage, requiring photo ID could be used to “help further crackdowns on free speech.
These issues might seem somewhat remote from the Premier League in the UK. Yet, even in countries where laws are more liberal, anonymous accounts have been used to blow the whistle against powerful companies and allowed people to openly discuss subjects such as domestic violence.
Tech companies also point out that many people simply do not have passports or driving licences so ID checks could exclude people in the developing world and even some poorer people in rich countries. One well-placed individual familiar with the inner workings of social media companies described the real-world ID solution as “completely unworkable”

No need for apologies. Wasn't sure (hazy memory) where the replay was. Thought it was down at theirs. You did indeed say that. Struggled to wake up today haha. As CT says above. Not sure it was ever proven but seem to remember seeing a photo of him sat in the stand in disguise.

Bobby Zamora’s comments on twitter sort of prove a point about the lack of respect and abuse of social media alluded to on this thread.
He was the Sky pundit in the studio for the game I think. It might have his last.
