Worst miss you've seen at t'Turf
Last Night's miss by Jay Rod was bad enough, but Raheem Sterling must take the biscuit in February 2018. His beating the ground in the goalmouth was a joy to behold, especially when it cost Citeh 2 points

Ok, Jay should have scored. But I've seen far worse. The ball was not an indeal height and was rising. He needed to get right over it very quickly to put it in.

In the mid 80s i remember a ball played square across the 6 yard box to Phil Malley with an open goal in front of him. He managed to get his legs tangled and the ball squirmed out towards the penalty spot. That at the time was as bad a miss as i had seen. Away from the Turf, Ian Moore missing from literally beneath the crossbar at Deepdale will take some beating.

So there should be, it was a terrible miss, 2 yards out in front of an open goal, he was expecting the cross it was no surprise so he didn't have to adjust his body, it was harder to miss than to score. I said during the match thread why is our shooting so high and the crossing so low

Leighton James against Stoke, a few days before we played Celtic?
Also, someone, in the 90's?, put one over the roof of the Cricket Field Stand, can't remember who though.

Ray Hankin once headed one down from about 5yds. Perfectly as the coaches would teach you. He put so much behind it that it bounced up over the bar. We were already celebrating.

If Ian Moore would have scored that we’d have made the playoffs. We missed out by 1 goal. Re: Worst miss you've seen at t'Turf
I remember thinking at the time that that chance was actually harder than it looked. Yes it looked an absolute sitter but then when you look at it and how the ball came to Wood it wasn't a straightforward one as he would really have to "wrap his head round the ball" to get it on target. Would need to see it again now but this is what I remember thinking at the time. Nothing rivals the Sterling and Ian Moore misses from games I have attended supporting Burnley.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 12:31 pmWood's miss against Wolves in the last minute. With that Sterling miss, im convinced he tried to dive about 3 seconds after he realised he’d completely messed up.

I am sure someone will correct me if my mind has forgotten details.
But 2008 at home to Watford, sure it was Akinbiyi or Blake who missed at open net.

Regarding the Delroy Facey one, my memory might be playing tricks on me here but didn't he score a 'perfect' hat-trick the next game?
Seem to recall he was the subject of Soccer AM 's 'Taxi for' spot for the miss then they featured the hat-trick the week after!

Re: Worst miss you've seen at t'Turf
I THINK it was also Jay who missed from about a yard out against Villa at home last season. Right after half time at the Bee Hole End, after they'd played us off the park first half and were leading 2-0. We got one back late on, but the miss cost us dear!

Seem to remember Ray Hankin missing a real 'open goal' at the Bee Hole end.
Skewed it wide from very close in on a muddy pitch. Can't remember who against though.
Funny some of the thoughts that linger down the years.

Re: Worst miss you've seen at t'Turf
I remember a drab 0-0 draw against Stoke (?) around 2006 or 2007 when Kyle Lafferty had a great chance to break the deadlock at the BHE, just needed a firm low shot, but he went for glory and blazed the ball way up in the Jimmy Mac with all the time in the world. Fair enough, probably not the worst ever, but so frustrating at the time.
The Ian Moore miss at PNE was criminal.

Not the worst miss, but when Grezza missed that penalty against Bristol City the whole ground was in shock for a few seconds and it seemed to go completely silent whilst we all tried to comprehend what had just happened. Always stuck with me that one

Re: Worst miss you've seen at t'Turf
Game against the nobbers in 2007.
Right at the start of the match Lee Mason awarded us a corner after a nobber defender used an "extended arm" on the goal line to stop a certain goal.
Obvious to all (except 1) it was a penalty and I was sufficiently incensed to write to the Referees Association ( or similar) questioning the refs integrity.

I remember Akinbiyi missing one in the Jimmy Mac end. If I remember rightly he had an open net and rolled it wide of the
right hand post, it was in his second spell with us. I can't remember who we played but it's amazing how little moments like that stay with you.
