What style of football would you like to see?
Re: What style of football would you like to see?
The football when we are 'on it' under Dyche is the best for me. Pragmatic, structured, direct and incredibly effective. If I could choose my favourite 'styles of play' under Dyche it would be the first Championship season with Vokes and Ings, Ings gave real incisiveness to our attacking play, then the Defour times of 17/18 - loved watching us control matches and play it through midfield.

Less consistent than Man United and for a shorter period of time, but I’d have paid to watch the great Arsenal teams under Wenger, before I’d have put my hand in my pocket to pay to watch the Man United teams.
The modern game, with overlapping full backs has its place and is proving to be effective. It won’t last forever though and hopefully one day we might return to the days of wingers that got you off your seat when they had the ball at their feet.
With Burnley, I’d love to see us limit somewhat the passes across midfield, back to a defender (with less passing ability) and hit it towards the strikers.
It has its place, is sometimes effective, but pleasing on the eye it often isn’t.

Re: What style of football would you like to see?
I'd like to see us get some more pace into the team.
No problem with the way we mix up the play at the moment, but I'd like to see:
a) us be able to genuinely counter attack and punish teams
b) be able to beat a man out wide more often, get to the bye-line and get crosses in
c) win more penalties by running at defenders at pace in dangerous areas

Re: What style of football would you like to see?
Agree with this. If we could attack at pace it would take us to the next level. A few seasons ago pundits kept going on about how the fashion for marauding full backs meant that you can put the top teams on the back foot with a ball over the top into the channels when they lost possession. We did just that against Liverpool although it was Woody doing it. I've not see us do it often and clearly having a pacey striker or winger helps massively with this. I'm convinced that fast counter attacking football and our framework would make us a real threat, even to the best teams in the league.whentheballmoves wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 9:27 amI'd like to see us get some more pace into the team.

Re: What style of football would you like to see?
A few points about this thread
We can't trust everyone's views about Dyche's football until he has left. A lot of supporters are very passionate about the manager in charge of our club, until he leaves. Then all the bit's they didn't like come out and it's the next man can't do know wrong until he leaves.
Coyles football was more exciting because it came from the players, it wasn't organised, methodical stuff you get from most coaches.
No matter which brand of football gets played, it all depends on that player taking his chance and scoring that goal.
If he scores you were brilliant, if he misses you were shocking.

This is the problem with someone having an agenda, they will say any old ******** to carry it on.

Re: What style of football would you like to see?
Which style do I prefer. Fast paced stuff.
How we played for the first 15 minutes against Everton at home this season. One touch, direct football.
We have struggled at times this season as our front 2 haven't been anywhere near mobile enough, for most parts. When you see other sides performing above their station for instance, it is usually because they have a very mobile strikeforce.

Off memory, it was very enjoyable to watch under Coyle. The home form was great. Did we get to 24 points by boxing day before he left?claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 10:55 amThis is the problem with someone having an agenda, they will say any old ******** to carry it on.
It was the 2nd half of the season that went drastically wrong.

Some have misty eyes of the first half of the season too, granted we picked up a few early home wins, but away from home we were a joke.
We went from 1st November to the 10th April winning 1 game home or away, our away form began 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, then there was the trip to Ewood. There was very little that was enjoyable about any of that season

Re: What style of football would you like to see?
I really don't mind how we set up and how we play. What irks me is when we play a 'long pass' to the forwards it's 'long ball, direct football'. Yet I saw a kick from a goalkeeper at the weekend (City I think) who put his player straight through on goal, and that was 'clever play by the keeper' with 'genius' used to describe it. We do play some lovely stuff at times which is largely unrecognised by the majority of the media.
And Saturday was superb. If we can beat Fulham and West Brom in the next two games, whatever we set out up to do, I really think The Toon and and Palace will be staring down the barrel if Fulham happen to pick up. Of course their result at Everton was fantastic for them, but to replicate that week on week will be a big ask for a team not used to winning games this season.

It was tough going into the unknown a bit like Dyche's first season in the big league.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 11:07 amSome have misty eyes of the first half of the season too, granted we picked up a few early home wins, but away from home we were a joke.

But who wouldn't get misty eyed, beating United at home with our only goal at Turf Moor against them since the 60s?

Re: What style of football would you like to see?
Watching Dyche's teams, I have learned to appreciate the organisation and discipline that goes into a team performance. It is admirable, and at times it can be impressive to watch, just as much as the tricks and flicks the top sides can indulge in.
Our style of play when we've the stronger players is fine but that'll rarely happen in the Prem and wasn't always a given in the Championship. Some of the football in 13/14 was fantastic, and occasionally in 15/16. Even in the Prem when we had a fit Defour, Cork, Brady pre-injury and JBG in midfield we'd play some really good stuff.
I said on Sunday, watching Leeds, I think a lot of this 'style' aspect is overplayed. OK, you've got an Allardyce team at one end and Pep's sides at the other extreme. But I'm sure the idea that Leeds, Villa or Southampton play great football is something that's mentioned once in the media then accepted as gospel. Most mid-table Prem teams are identical. We knocked it around at Palace on Saturday as well as I've seen those teams do it all season. Maybe we should have let three in at the other end to be truly 'entertaining'.

Beating them was a brilliant night, but that was what it was 1 night, but ask anyone who did all the away games that season if it was an enjoyable experience. Thankfully we had an afternoon where Hull couldn't be arsed and we got to see an away win that season, in April.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Tue Feb 16, 2021 11:16 amIt was tough going into the unknown a bit like Dyche's first season in the big league.

Losing at home to Portsmouth was the only expected downer. But even then they were only bottom because of the 15 point deduction.

I despise Coyle as much as the next fan, but this thread was about which style of football you like to see. We played much better football under Coyle than Dyche that cannot even be refuted.
Turn the mirror on yourself with your agenda.

It was a good thread this, with lots of respectful discussion. Ah well.
