what is the d for in the £21 13s 4d, I thought it should be p for pence?

Half Crowns were my favorite, proper rich if you had one of those.

Was always d for pennies in the old money with p being introduced for the new pence in 1971.

The d was short for denarius, which was an old roman coin translated to 'penny' in the Bible.

Thus the phrase "In for a denarius in for a pound".

Was rooting around in the garage the other day and found a tin of Castrol grease which had the price label on it. 2s 6d. Half a crown in the old money. The grease was fine BTW

No, a shilling was 12d that became 5p

Yes, but for denarius we used the word penny or pence.

So your 12d was 12 pennies (pence)

So in fact 12 pence became 5p.

It's all very simple...

We used to have a card game called "Sum-it" based on old Pounds, Shillings and Pennies ...

You drew a Sum-it card (2/6, 5/-, 7/6, 10/- 15/- £1) and then had to collect cards that added up exactly

https://www.wopc.co.uk/games/sum-it

I think we probably still have it somewhere or my brother does ... must be 40 odd years since we played 🤣

It’s fifty years today since we went decimal. The first thing I bought was a Mars Bar for 3.5p then spent 2p on the bus.
Should have walked it off

Some interesting notes on decimalisation:

I don't remember the steady introduction of the new coins.

I remember that for a period of time you could pay for things in mixed coinage ie. old coins and new decimal coins.

I left school later that year, 1971, on the bus journeys home we used to exchange coins between one another to make it more difficult for the bus conductor to work out how much the fare was.

It was quite funny at the time for us kids watching the confused conductors trying to work with 2 currencies! 😁
