James McClean

Still getting aggro, gets it all year round apparently.

Some people need to grow up, but also in light of the continuing racism aimed at footballers like Martial, it's time for the larger social media sites to change their rules and stop anonymous accounts.

His political views may not be the same as mine but the situation he finds himself in is beyond ridiculous.

Time that technology was applied to social media and the abusers were punished.

His family shouldn't be brought into this at all.

He has certainly brought some of this all on himself though, you don't see any other Irish players getting the slightest bit of stick in England.

On a similar note, I have recently read Johnny Crossan's autobiography "the man they couldn't ban" He tells of the injustices of growing up in Derry and how it affected his progress as a Footballer in Northern Ireland by being a Derry Man.

Can’t really blame social media on this occasion. He would’ve received abuse anyway. He has made his choice to not represent Northern Ireland (where he was born and raised) and play for the ROI instead. He knew what he was getting into and he knew he’d get abuse for it. Doesn’t make it right of course.

I don't see Nemanja Matic getting stick over his refusal to wear a poppy though..

The logic is if you're here working, a poppy should be worn... Yet he never gets a mention or any abuse.

Yes yes, it's all his fault that idiots feel the need to send him death threats etc throughout the year.

It's time anonymity was stopped on larger social media sites.

A poppy ‘should be worn’. Give over! Those that paid the ultimate sacrifice were fighting for a free world.

He would’ve received death threats either way. Neil Lennon was no different. Sad but true.

You would have to ask the abusers why, it's not simply conflicts as all the German players for instance wear them. Matic has in the past.

Maybe people don't like him stoking the fire up to a conflict which has been peaceful for a few years now?

That’s the problem, people thinking he’s stoking the fire. He isn’t. He has his beliefs and he’s sticking to his principles and values. Fair play to him.

I served for 26 years and the situation in Northern Ireland is incredibly complex.

That's how people think though, that wearing a poppy is compulsory, when it isn't.

My old man did 2 tours in N.Ireland.

Perhaps he should have thought about the repercussions of his home schooling history lesson that he posted last year.
I have my own reasons but he will never get sympathy from me.

He doesn't stoke anything.
He doesn't say anything, people can't seem to let it go, even when he wrote that letter when at Stoke explaining it.

Idiots can't help themselves and maybe it's time they should be forced to be honest about who they are so we can see if they're still brave enough to make those threats, or in the case of other lads throw racial slurs at them.

He's apologised for that, read the article.

Good to know you've no sympathy for a man getting death threats over naff all.

So if a murderer apologises it makes it OK ?

The thought was there to do it in the first place, so yes I have no sympathy for him.

The Royal British Legion said "the decision to wear the poppy must be a matter of personal choice"
This is tagged onto every article about X player not wanting to wear the poppy and there should be no further discussion, it shouldn't even need to be said. Still some people either don't, or choose not to get it.

With his wife saying they get abuse every single day, I presume it goes a lot further than just not wearing a poppy?

Godisadjay your posting on a football forum about your deeply sensitive views. As another poster already said, I to think it’s just pure attention seeking on your behalf.
If you care so much about the issues go to a different platform and sincerely lobby to do something about it. Don’t just attention seek

It's football fans dishing out the abuse and death treats.

There is a history on this very forum of the vitriol that has been aimed in the direction of McClean.

If you're unable to understand why I've raised the issue, then I'm going to outright say you're part of the problem and don't have an issue with the abuse he and other tr footballers get.

Not sure about this bloke in some ways I admire him sticking to his principles and yet part of me suspects that he deliberately goes out out of his way, at times, to antagonise people but with that said he should not receive the abuse that he does.

Martial received vile racist abuse over a football game, from people who can hide their identity.

Yet I'm the problem?

If you don’t then don’t cry about the mixed replies you shall receive on a football forum.

I think most people condone serious abuse online. Some will disagree on the lines where you can't cross though.

On a messageboard where 95% of users don't use their real names, your probably not going to convince people every should have to use their real names?

People spew hatred for all sorts of reasons that they think are justified. You only have to look online to see people spewing if you don't want to have the vaccine you shouldn't be able to leave the house, or get treated by the NHS.

Who decides what's acceptable?

If you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen. McClean knows what comments he will receive on social media the simple solution is get on with it or delete social media.

Well that's one way of stopping abuse: if you're being abused, delete your account.

Maybe we could stop shoplifting by simply closing all the shops.

If your child was being bullied on line, what’s one of the first things you would say to them?
Mine would be ‘right come off line’. Pretty simple tbh

I have said the larger social media sites, by that I mean the ones used by people like footballers to connect with their fans.
I didn't say this place.

Racism isn't acceptable, nor is homophobia or issuing death threats, I thought that would be pretty effing obvious in this day and age.

My boy's only 4 so I've not had to cross that bridge yet but taking something from him when he is the victim doesn't seem the right thing to do.

If it happened in "the real world" such as at a football club, I don't think I'd take him out of the club, I'd get the club to deal with it.
