The Revenant

Post by houseboy » Sun Feb 21, 2021 11:45 pm

Just got round to watching this after thinking about it for ages. What a fabulous film. Unbelievably real. The cinematography is absolutely stunning. The acting is top notch (DiCaprio is fantastic despite hardly speaking throughout). They used real language rather than pigeon English. And there was no romanticising the lifestyle of the time. To top it all I have seen some great special effects over the years but how the fck did they pull off that bear attack. Riveting from beginning to end. To anyone who hasn’t seen it...do it. Three top academy awards and rightly so

Watched it for the first time when it was on BBC2 last year and thought exactly the same. A truly fantastic film. Brutal but beautiful.

Actually I thought the same. It’s the mark of a great film when it affects you like that. Felt truly relieved when he got the horse.

The scene with the bear is pretty scary.

Think I read somewhere that they used natural lighting for all of the filming to give it a realistic feel. Great film.

Saw this at the cinema when it came out, been meaning to watch it again ever since. Easily in my top 10.

Thought it was overrated myself at the time - sorry, houseboy et al. Dragged on forever. (That's all very Devils Advocate of me - ha ha)

Agree, though that the special effects and the bear shenanigans were fantastic.

The beginning sequence made my jaw drop at the cinema. I love those one take thingies( or at least made to look like it is).

Yeah. No lighting used at all.

Actually saw at the end credits special effects (which can only really be the bear attack) were done by Industrial Light and Magic, which I believe is George Lucas’ company.

Saw at pictures when it came out, struggling to recall a better film it has everything and well deserves the acclaim.

Staggeringly good film. Wish I'd seen it on the big screen.

It's alright. It's well shot. Acting is pretty good but my goodness what a miserable watch of a film. I don't mind gritty realism which has something to say. Not sure this does. Feels like a studio's attempt to hoover Oscars rather than a genuine story.

DiCaprio is great yes but he's done way better than this numerous times.

I agree. I watched it at the cinema and was fairly bored to be honest. I might try to give it another watch to see if it can change my mind.

DiCaprio should’ve won an Oscar for ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, which is still very well acted, but far more enjoyable.

I also found it admirable but not entertaining enough. I was glad when it finished. A bit like reading a James Joyce novel, you know it was brilliant but you still wish you hadn't bothered.

I had a few hours to kill this afternoon so I thought I'd give this another go,when I watched it on release I gave it 1 out of 10.....nothing has changed still 1 from 10....and that one is for the magnificent Tom Hardy.

I watched it last night although entertaining it wasn't anything to write home about.

Acting OK but for Tom Hardy, I couldn't tell a word he said

Enjoyed it overall. As stated above, cold barely tell what Tom Hardy said. Would have benefitted from subtitles!
