It's still only February but there is a definite feel of Spring, especially when you see the birds with nest building material -

Re: Spring Photo's
It is an abbreviation of photographs and the apostrophe replaces the missing letters graph and so photo's is actually correct.

Typo's are funny ... pulling people up on grammar (incorrectly) and making yourself look silly is even funnier
Our 1st spring visitor was up early last evening ... we had seen a message on the lawn, so put some food out and at 945pm there he was on the lawn...
The Hellebores are enjoying the late February sunshine.

Let's nip this in the bud.
Explanation seems clear pretty clear here & word reference site is a well respected one: https://forum.wordreference.com/threads ... s.2628290/
You weren't a grocer by any chance CT in the past? An apostrophe 's is used to identify a relationship of possession between different nouns, e.g. John's Mum has died/Albert's season ticket hasn't arrived yet. If the noun ends in 'S' or is a plural form it can be used after, e.g. Jesus' disciples were..........
I don't understand CT why you say abbreviated forms of words must use the apostrophe to identify plural forms. Can some plurals ever use the apostrophe form?

Re: Spring Photo's
I didn't - what I said is an apostrophe is used to indicate missing letters when you abbreviate a word. So photo's is correct as an abbreviation of photographs, the apostrophe replacing the missing letters 'graph'. Shame really that someone decided to use one of these threads to nit pick at the OP in the first place.diamondpocket wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 8:40 am

Re: Spring Photo's
OK, got it. I never knew that to be honest. I wasn't being argumentative, I just thought the apostrophe was used in the possessive form. Learn something every day.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 12:08 pmI didn't - what I said is an apostrophe is used to indicate missing letters when you abbreviate a word. P.S. I'm not sure he was trying to belittle the OP. These grammar things are more about the person commenting than belittling others, it's just one of those personal gripes people have coz it annoys them fiercely to see grammar errors. There are quite a few around. I remember my Grandad, god bless him, constantly correcting me when I spoke in hypothetical situations as I always made errors as a teenager/young adult.

Re: Spring Photo's
That is amazing. Look at the word 'wasn't' that you have written above. You have put in an apostrophe in place of the missing letter 'o' - wasn't / was notdiamondpocket wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 2:43 pmOK, got it. I never knew that to be honest. Re: Spring Photo's
Yeah, I get that. But the idea was about the plural forms and the confusion regarding the S at the end that when used in this way looks & reads very strange. Because it rightly is mistaken for the possessive form. That's all. WASN'T is actually two words though and is a contracted form so in theory it is different to one word and that is why there was confusion.spadesclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 2:56 pmThat is amazing. Re: Spring Photos
The word photo now appears in both the Oxford and Cambridge English dictionaries so it is arguable that it is now recognised as a word in itself and therefore the plural should be photos.

Re: Spring Photo's
And this was completely necessary, obviously! I found it belittling and totally irrelevant to the discussion as this is a different point as mentioned previously in my post. WASN'T is a contracted form of 2 words and not one word and has nothing to do with plural forms. I didn't realise there was that rule for ONE word contraction forms when one wants to indicate a plural noun. OK? You clearly did. Bravo!spadesclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 2:56 pmThat is amazing. Again, totally unnecessary. You made your point. You made it well. Why end with a snidey, sarcastic comment?diamondpocket wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 3:35 pmI didn't realise there was that rule for ONE word contraction forms when one wants to indicate a plural noun. OK? You clearly did. Bravo!
I'm sorry if you found an earlier comment of mine belittling. It certainly wasn't intended to be. When you said you thought the apostrophe was just used in the possessive form I took that to mean you didn't realise it was used in contractions. It was that that amazed me.
