Bruno V Tyson

Post by EricaJacko » Fri Feb 26, 2021 12:14 pm

I'm just watching an excellent documentary on Sky Documentaries regarding the fights between Bruno and Tyson. I vaguely remember being in tears when Bruno lost. Worth a watch.

very worthy effort by frank, but ultimately he stepped into the ring with the most dangerous heavyweight of possibly any era.

It could be argued he came up short against the elite tall Heavy Weights but he had no right destroying people like he did at his size and I’d say he’s arguably the most dangerous boxer we’ve ever seen. I love everything about his animal mentality in a ring, killer in a ring.

Along with Ali there’s not many boxers held in the same regard by their peers as Tyson

Still get lost for an hour in videos on YouTube when I’m watching him

I know tyson adored Ali, and respectfully said he would have lost had they fought, but I think tyson in his prime would have destroyed him.

Yeah, even as a big Tyson fan, absolutely no chance for me.

even henry cooper put ali on his a**e, so imagine what tyson would do to him.

Yeh, maybe the same as Sonny Liston . For those too young Liston had a similar reputation as Tyson and was soundly beaten by a young Ali not even in his prime

Unfortunately, Tyson defeated himself and in doing so, denied himself the chance to cement himself as one of, if not the best, heavyweight boxers.

His stature didn’t always do him any favours, but he made up for that with power, pure aggression and getting inside to devastating effect.

He was built like one of those oversized American Bulldogs.

smokin joe was another who got the better of Ali Elizabeth, another very tough fighter, but I don't think big joe had half the talent of tyson.
The peak period for mike tyson before all the madness began, was something to behold. I rather doubt anyone could have coped with him.

Too much talk about Tyson , he was awesome for a relatively briefer period that he should have been. Bruno is part of the thread title and achieved more than his potential suggested .

I maintain whilst your modern heavy weight don’t hold the prestige the old heavy weights did.. AJ, Fury are huge and it’s a different fight. A wilder punch knocks any man out.

No real opinion because I choose not to because I enjoy then all, I don’t really understand why we have to compare eras with eras, just appreciate the best you witnessed! Same with football

Bruno rocked Tyson in that fight. Stunned him. Had him in the palm of his hand, one punch from a knock down. Sadly, Frank couldn't believe it, and froze too. Who knows how the rest of the fight would have gone had he landed that "next punch...?

Loved both Frank Bruno and Mike Tyson.

Off topic, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - Tyson Fury will go down as an all time great (and possibly best British heavyweight ever) when he finally hangs his gloves up.

the modern british boxers are mainly loud mouths, clowns, and circus freaks. a motley crew of dross made popular by bookies, promoters, and betting companies. the wealthy lads generation soak all this slop up, but no fighter in this present time could hold a candle to the tyson era, or earlier. its become a farce like wrestling.

Enjoyed the programme tonight.
Fan of both boxers and both were total opposites, Bruno was a top fighter maybe too nice at times who got in the ring to win fights.
Tyson went into the ring to hurt people, the man was an animal and had beat many opponents before they even got into the ring, he was student of boxing, studying fighters from Jack Johnson & Dempsey upto Joe Louis & Ali and for me will always been seen as one the best.

tyson was entertaining but so overrated in a time when the heavyweight division was pretty much moribund.

like i've said before he never beat anybody who was really good and lost to average opposition. any comparisons to ali et al are silly in my opinion.

bruno could have been so much more successful if he'd done more roadwork. his fitness was always lacking and he always tired early on.

edit: joe louis for me as the greatest. a great boxer and as tough as a tank.

I think the Bruno fight is the one where the rest of the division thought “hang on, he’s been hurt here” and the aura of invincibility disappeared. After that, fighters had a go and in Japan, James Douglas became the first to defeat Tyson.
I agree with Elizabeth, when Cus D’amato died, Tyson was left without anyone to listen to and be influenced by. Their relationship was based on proper respect, and unfortunately after D’amatos death he became involved with Don King, and the rest is not a very nice history.
I honestly believe Mike Tyson could have and should have become the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time... had D’Amato lived another 10 or 15 years, I believe we would all be agreeing on this.

Eddie does well at overhyping British boxers which I think is great because he makes them lots of money, he’s had a rough 12 months though.
Like him or not, AJ is one of the best at the moment and Josh Taylor is an Elite boxer for me. I also genuinely believe Dennis McCann is going to be the real deal, watch out for him!

22 yr old Ali vs 22 yr old Tyson I’d have Tyson all day, just too much power allied to great technique, but say the same bout when both 31 Ali would have schooled Tyson like a rookie .

For 2 fighters who were “ robbed” of their prime years Ali most definitely came back the stronger. Though should have retired in 76 and god only knows how he got those 2 decisions against Ken Norton .

Cheers for that. He was an absolute animal in the ring but when you watch that, after every fight he was looking to help his opponent up or was concerned about their welfare.
