Peter Lorimer battling long term illness in a hospice
You forget that players of that era are now in their Seventies.

Yeh, dirty Leeds. Think he was one of the few like Paul Madeley who fans could stomach

Re: Peter Lorimer battling long term illness in a hospice
Yes Lorimer was one of the more tolerable Leeds players, and he's only 74 which makes this news even harder to hear, I just hope he and his family manage to enjoy whatever time he has remaining.
Before my time but my dad swears he went in goal once after the keeper received his marching orders, is he correct with this claim?

And Eddie Gray. That's about it though. Most of the rest were animals, on instruction from the horrorible Revie.

Re: Peter Lorimer battling long term illness in a hospice
Let’s not turn this into a Leeds **** bashing . We had our dirty players and yes they didn’t all play at the same time but it’s foolhardy to not recognise when a former likeable footballer is battling illness

Joe Jordan. Alan Clarke. Paul Reaney, Johnny Giles. Frank Gray...the list goes on. Great 70’s team and great manager.

That was an away game for Leeds at Chelsea in the very early part of the '72/'73 season, David Harvey was injured and Lorimer replaced him in goal. We played Carlisle at home on the same day (a 2-2 draw I think) and of course we went on to be Champions of Division 2 that season.tiger76 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 10:40 pmYes Lorimer was one of the more tolerable Leeds players, and he's only 74 which makes this news even harder to hear, I just hope he and his family manage to enjoy whatever time he has remaining.

Ah! splendid I thought somebody would recall this event, I have to say it doesn't surprise me that the injury occurred in Chelsea-Leeds game of that era, they weren't exactly known for being tame affairs were they.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 11:02 pmThat was an away game for Leeds at Chelsea in the very early part of the '72/'73 season, David Harvey was injured and Lorimer replaced him in goal. I never really understand the hatred towards the Leeds team from the seventies. I thought that they were a class act. Allan Clarke, Peter Lorimer, Eddie and Frank Gray, Paul Madeley, Johnny Giles and later signings Duncan McKenzie and Tony Currie. Perhaps Billy Bremner and Norman Hunter could be considered a little tough but I’d like to know who wouldn’t want either of them in their team.

Re: Peter Lorimer battling long term illness in a hospice
Peter Lorimer was a great player for Leeds, and his sad news follows the news of Gordon McQueen's dementia. I remember him and Ray Hankin getting sent off when we beat Leeds back in the 70's. I think Ted Heath opened the Bob Lord stand that day.

Not sure if this actually happened. But have a memory of Lorimer running down the wing in front of the Longside, when a police Alsatian got loose and chased him. Anyone remember? Or am I imagining it?

I find it a reality check that the legend players I watched as a child are now of such an age..........
Whatever they were like on a pitch........
Hope he’s comfortable and given the pandemic hope his family can be with him.

A prominent top flight keeper of that era spoke of Lorimers ability to strike a ball with real power... Only bettered, in his opinion, by Burnley's Frank Casper who he rated the best in the country through his immaculate timing of his shots.

Having said all that, my best wishes go to Peter Lorimer in this his greatest fight.

Re: Peter Lorimer battling long term illness in a hospice
Lorimer had dead ball technique that enabled him to have a powerful shot. He would look at those lined up in a wall and scratch his foot on the ground like a bull, to intimidate the defenders. More often than not, the wall would move and he would score.
Shame to hear that he is unwell.

Ray Hankin chinned him as he was being pulled back on the half way line, right in front of the Longside.Claretnick wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 11:32 pmPeter Lorimer was a great player for Leeds, and his sad news follows the news of Gordon McQueen's dementia. Now that is an element of yesteryear sadly missing from today's game with all the subs teams now have. The delight of an outfield player having to go in goal. Don't think it's something we have seen since John Spicer's heroics down at Kenilworth Road, but am open to correctiontiger76 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 10:40 pmYes Lorimer was one of the more tolerable Leeds players, and he's only 74 which makes this news even harder to hear, I just hope he and his family manage to enjoy whatever time he has remaining.

Re: Peter Lorimer battling long term illness in a hospice
Bremner and Hunter a little tough? That's something of an understatement and you've also mentioned the worst of the lot in Johnny Giles. Clarke was another thug and there were so many of them. McKenzie & Currie were two players signed after Revie had left the club. Top players but littered with out and out thugs.dermotdermot wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 11:16 pmI never really understand the hatred towards the Leeds team from the seventies. Re: Peter Lorimer battling long term illness in a hospice
It's rare now for an outfield player to have to go in goal but over the years I don't think I've seen it that often at Burnley - Latcham Farrell, Monington and Eyres are the only ones I can recall prior to Spicer.todclaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 10:40 amNow that is an element of yesteryear sadly missing from today's game with all the subs teams now have. Brian Laws v Blackpool back in the early 80s. Think Stevenson saw red for booting a Pool player up the posterior during a 4-1 win?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 12:05 pmIt's rare now for an outfield player to have to go in goal but over the years I don't think I've seen it that often at Burnley - Latcham Farrell, Monington and Eyres are the only ones I can recall prior to Spicer.

Re: Peter Lorimer battling long term illness in a hospice
The very mention of Brian Laws and goalkeeping reminds me of the game against Leicester in 1982 when Alan Stevenson was sent off. I think I've got this the right way round but Paul McGee went in goal for the resulting penalty which they scored. He immediately came out with Laws going in goal. Not only did McGee and Laws go in goal but prior to this Laws had missed a penalty and later in the game McGee also missed a penalty.
Now that's a quiz question - which two players went in goal and also missed penalties in a Burnley game?
