Categorising our Squad

Post by Devils_Advocate » Mon Mar 01, 2021 12:31 pm

Leaving out the young lads who are obviously still developing where would you place our first team squad within the following categories. I've included my view and think the majority on here would agree me.

Too Good for Burnley

Pope
Tarks
McNeil

As Good as it Gets

Mee
Taylor
Cork
Woods

Bang Average

Pieters
Lowton
Westwood
Barnes
Jay-Rod
JBG
Brownhill
Peacock-Farrell

Not up to Scratch

Long
Bardsley
Brady
Vydra
Stephens

Not too dissimilar but with an added category.

Too Good for Burnley

Pope

Mee
Taylor
Wood
JBG (When fit)

Bang Average

Cork
Pieters
Lowton
Westwood
Brownhill
Peacock-Farrell
Bardsley (Final season in this bracket)

Up for debate due to form
Barnes
Jay-Rod
Vydra

Not up to Scratch

Long
Brady
Stephens

We’ll have to wait and see how Woods surgery went before categorising him.

Before we start categorising players, the categories themselves could do with some work.

Too Good for Burnley

Pope
Tarks
McNeil

As Good as it Gets

Mee- young player required (for when's his legs go)
Taylor
Cork- young player required (for when his legs go)
Woods- ok for now

Bang Average

Pieters- happy as a squad player for another year
Lowton- happy as a squad player for another year
Westwood- ok for now
Barnes- Upgrade required
Jay-Rod- Upgrade required
JBG- Shakes off the injuries or update required
Brownhill- Play in the center (still needs time)
Peacock-Farrell- Needs game time

Not up to Scratch

Long- upgrade required
Bardsley- upgrade required
Brady- Replacement needed
Vydra- upgrade required
Stephens- replacement needed

Along with the above we also need a new right midfielder and possible a CB when Tarks goes. That's 9 players in an ideal world I'd upgrade/replace or look to bed a young lad in for the next season or so. Realistically we need to sign at least 3-4 first teamers this window to aid in the rebuilding job. Players like Mee and Cork are fine for the first team now but we need to be thinking about who's next when there legs start to go.

This is the proverbial can that has been kicked down the road for too many windows.

We’ve stored up an issue that is starting to return the sort of recruitment numbers that in themselves would be difficult, even if we weren’t operating a very tight budget.

I’m not sure what is meant by the “as good as it gets” category- does it mean those players are as good as Burnley will get in their position, or that the players themselves as are as good as they’ll get?

I’d certainly have McNeil in the second category though, I think he’s still got a lot of improving to do if he wants to play a level above us. And Chris Wood is an interesting one too, his goals record is deserving of the second category, but his ability with the ball is definitely not.

What about the categories “was ok but not this week” and “I’ve changed my mind on this one” plus “this one’s an enigma”

I’ve made a couple of changes, moving players down. Think it’s fairly evident to all that a big summer in the transfer window is a must if we stay up. At least 6 players needed.

As good as it gets was meant for players who are about as good as we could hope for in their position and who we wouldn't think about upgrading but at the same time are players we should be able to keep hold of because they are not going to be chased by the top clubs like Trippier, Ings and Keane were.

Ben Mee is about as perfect an example of this you could get for our club

McNeil has to start contributing a few more goals and assists before getting close to being “too good for Burnley”. I don’t see any evidence he is at the level of wingers or attacking midfielders like Townsend or Hudson-Odoi who both have a better record this season.

I think he has all the potential, and playing will develop this, not sitting on a bench.

This. It does make you wonder if the new owners actually anticipated this. I don’t think Garlick would have been emphasising the issue before the deal went through.

I agree with the original poster, except I would drop McNeil to the ‘bang average’ category. His mistakes/ lack of tracking etc have probably cost us as many goals as he’s assisted/ scored himself in this last season and a half.

If Cork's as good as it gets we're truly screwed, bang average player for a long while. Wood is another bang average player too, scores the odd goal but he can't play football.

About 9 of our squad.
I don't need to name them, we all know they'll be lucky to get a contract at another PL club when their current deal runs out.

A lot of our players are overused due to small squad and would improve dramatically at a club with a bigger squad. McNeil and Tarks for example Play week in and week out

It’s perhaps a good job you are not standing in local elections then if you think the majority on here would agree with you?
If you were I think you would be in danger of losing your deposit.
I have to disagree with you I am sorry to say. Maybe not all the shouty people on here agree with me all the time but with most of the views I share the silent majority definitely are in agreement and this thread is no exception.

My advice to you would be to just think about my opening post a littler deeper and continue to keep it in your mind over the next couple of months and I think you will come around and see the error of your ways

I’ve seen worse than Vydra’s to be fair
Yes. Vydra is definitely in the Peter Crouch school of punching above his weight.

This thread does a great disservice to our players IMHO.
