Gaming PC Graphics card HELP

Post by 7decades » Tue Mar 02, 2021 8:50 am

My son urgently needs a Graphics card for his Gaming PC. Is there anybody who has one for sale or could advise him where he could try to purchase from a good source.

Any help you can give in this matter will be very gratefully received. Regards Phil

Bad news is about the worst time to buy, massive shortages, inflated prices.

https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/proce ... n-is-right

If you look at any of the big retailers: Scan, Overclockers, Aria etc there's almost nothing in stock.
You'll find stuff on ebay but prices are eye watering even for cards a few generations old.

What are his needs, had the old one died? If he can wait it out I would and see how supply comes back whilst keeping an eye out for restocks of some of the new mid range cards eg: NVidia 3060. But you'll have to be on the ball to get one.

As Combat said, there is a massive worldwide shortage at the moment. Some folk are buying pre-built pc's just to cannibalise the graphics card and sell on for a profit. Apparently this has been caused by bitcoin mining although I'm happy to be corrected. NVidia are rushing a product to market that has bitcoin functions removed but how long this will take is unknown.

Similar advice to above. If it is just to upgrade then hang on to the old one. If the old one is broken then the best thing to do is look for the cheaper ones and suck up poorer graphics quality until the market settles down.

Bitcoin price might be having a small impact, but it's far less efficient to mine on gaming GPUs these days. It's left to the big farms now running custom asic rigs.
The main issue is there is a global semiconductor shortage

Supply was hit at factories closes at the same time demand spiked as people needed consumer electronics to work from home.
Everything been hit, PCs, cameras, car assembly lines being shut down because there aren't the chips to put in them.

Ring up CCL and Scan.

You won't be much in luck but they might have some 1050's in stock or something that could tide you over for a bit.

And it's nothing to do with Bitcoin, that ship sailed years ago.

It's Ethereum.

If the price stays below $2k for another few weeks, they'll be easier to get hold of.

Keep an eye out on things like this https://www.stockinformer.co.uk/checker ... -3070-3090

Scan get them in occasionally and don't announce it to avoid their website crashing but ultimately you'll be lucky to get anything good at a decent price at the moment.

You could probably find a second hand one on eBay as a stop gap. Something as low as a GTX660 would probably suffice temporarily. Some computers also have integrated graphics so you may have a computer with a graphics card you could pull out already.

I have an old Radeon r9 390 (8Gb) which you could have for, say, £150 + p&p, if that’s any use to you.

Hi Phil. I’m in the midlands.

If you’re interested in the gpu I have, pop your email address on here and we can take it from there. I’m not keen on having too much of my personal info on this public messageboard.

I’ll let you know once I’ve see your email address, so you can edit it out again.

You think that’s cheap, do you? I paid £270 for it, but that was about 5 years ago, so I thought it would have lost a little less than half it’s value. I don’t want to take advantage of any current shortages, but I do want a fair price.

That said, I’ve offered it for £150 now, so I’ll stand by that offer.

It's very reasonable.

Especially given the climate.

It'll do for gaming too still, the only other thing he'll have a chance of getting new is a 1030 and I wouldn't use that to run windows!

Yeah. It should certainly run AAA games at 1080. Not sure how it would cope with 4K, though.

I'm running a 1080ti from a 2017 high end build.

When the 3000 series was announced I looked at how much I'd get for it, not a lot as there were also lots pulled from mining rigs that were no longer economical.
Now they're going for 80% of 2017 price I paid, staggering!

Bought my son a 1660 super about a year ago (pretty much to the day) for about £220.

They're going for nearly £500 on ebay now....

I've got my eye out for a 3080 so I can cover most of the cost it by selling a mid-range year old card 2nd hand... madness.
