I know we probably have no choice and it’s a sensible signing but we really should be looking at improvements on the likes of Bardsley

I think you can probably forget about a new RB coming in this summer then.

Great signing.

Top pro is Bardo. Never seems to be injured and always plays well when he plays.

No doubt also a key figure in the dressing room - seems to have a great attitude and no doubt plays a role in guiding our younger players, which seems to get overlooked on here.

I was all up for a new RB this summer but Lowton’s form completely negates the need, so Bardo’s signing allows us to spend money in other areas.

Good, means we can concentrate on getting new players in for other areas.
Then next year replace him.

Copied and pasted from 2020? ;)

Personally I'm not blown away with this but are pragmatic in the fact that we are facing at least 3-4 new faces this summer and want to retain the core of the group, with the good characters here to impress on new signings what we stand for and our team ethos.

In that sense, it's great. I'm not gonna lie though, a 36 year old Bardo being a regular starter (in the event of a injury to Lowton) scares me to death.

Lowtons form could just as easily disappear as easily as it appeared & a 35 year right back consistently filling in is shakey ground, just hope lowtons form is permanent.

The problem I see with this approach (financially we might have no choice) is our bet chance of getting a quality right back is doing what we did with Taylor.

We brought a very good Championship player still in his early 20s with real potential and had the luxury of not needing him to go straight in to the first team

Lowtons form can be a bit inconsistent but at the moment he's good enough to be our first choice right back so now is the ideal time to look for a good young right back to maybe hit the first team in the 22/23 season.

If we wait another 18 months we could easily be in a position where we need to buy a right back to go straight into the first team and therefore we wont be in a position to risk throwing a young player in and we wont have the money to buy a ready made Charlie Taylor of the standard he's at now.

This mean we will probably just have to look for a solid and safe older pro who's seen his better days and wont have any resale value and so just kick the need to refresh our team and find players like Tarks and Taylor who we can develop and grow into top players further down the road.

Nothing against Bardsley who has been brilliant as cover and a challenge to Lowton but now is when we should being a bit bolder and looking 18-36 months ahead and not just looking at cheap short term fixes

Lowton is playing the best football of his career so the need for a right back has pretty much gone. I’m sure that will have played a part in this decision.

We need a winger and a striker in the summer in my eyes (and a centre back if Tarkowski leaves), and this will hopefully allow us more flexibility to make that happen and improve the first eleven.

It could, or it could continue/improve further, in which case any new right back would (rightly) not get a look in. Assuming no new RB signing in summer, we’d be able to address in January if Lowton’s form dipped or he got injured. Bardo has never let us down from what I can remember and has a decent cross too.

FAR more important that we strengthen in other areas when it’s a position we have a player in great form.

And as per my previous point, we cannot underestimate his influence on the wider squad / younger players.

Incidentally, 2022 is when Kenny’s contract expires. Although the Celtic fans are pretty scathing about him (say he’s worth £2m(!) not the £10m quoted) but do say he’s sound defensively, which is probably what we look for first and foremost.

Its the future !

Another example of what appears to be a lack of forward planning by the club

We have a manager who just wants to surround himself with older experienced pros

And, it would appear, a new management team who say they want to find "new, younger" talent but don't have the money needed to invest in such player's, so have to back Dyche in giving out these new contracts to the older guys just to keep some remnants of a squad together

I wouldn't have expected anything else from you other than every potential avenue for negativity. Such as shame we are so bad that we keep staying in the Premier League. Try supporting the club. It's actually enjoyable.

Good move by us this. Top pro, always puts a shift in when selected. With Lowton currently in a rich vein of form, and PB waiting in the bench, we are in pretty good shape at RB for the time being. No hurry to worry here.

I’m not against this per se, Bardsley is a good solid pro, despite him being near to the end of his career.

In part, I’d hope that this move has been made on the back of an assessment of all the areas that we need to improve in, this summer.

As I’ve said on a number of occasions, we’ve been storing up a problem, through lack of recruitment. That problem is nearing a point that is too much to deal with in one window.

If this is the reasoning and it allows us to focus on more pressing areas, I’m fine with it. If however, it suggests minimal investment in the squad, barring essential signings (Tarkowski leaving for example), I fear for next season.

Lowton’s recent form has been a bonus but equally, it can easily dip to levels that we’ve seen for periods in recent seasons.

This summer is going to tell us a hell of a lot.

So if Barnes and Jay Rod started banging in some goals this season, people would be happy going with the same front 4 next season?

At some point we're going to have to stop kicking the can down the road and look to improve our squad. As well as Lowton is playing at the moment there's been plenty of spells recently where he's struggled.

Have a look at CT's squad on this MB and I think you will see that we already have a squad of 22 and that includes Glennon, Benson as they were 21 by January 2021 and assumes Mumbongo, Brady are released, Tarks leaves and Dunne extends his contract. It also assumes Gibson leaves. The next few weeks should tell us what the New Board are thinking because if we extend contracts for Brady, Mumbongo and Dunne then unless Gibson and Tarks leave we are looking at 26 players for 25 slots.
Cannot see us signing many players this summer. We rarely have a squad of 25 players over 21 years of age on Jan 1st of the coming season.

While he’s decent back up we still need a “proper quality” right back . Lowton has had a few decent games but his form can dip badly

Always cheaper to renew than recruit in football.

I just hope the ones that say it will allow us to spend well in other areas are right..

When you can’t recruit players the only option is to retain the ones you’ve got. It’s simple arithmetic if you want to field a side.

Had my doubts when we signed him, especially after that casino incident, but has proved to be a great signing and fully deserving of a new deal

Gibson is off, £8 million to Norwich as part of the loan deal if they won promotion and I think they're currently 10 points clear at the top.

Assuming survival, will we enter the 21/22 season with a first eleven better than the 20/21 season?

We need to do.
