The Turf pub
Re: The Turf pub
The best thing about a pub is it will never cater of everyone. Personally I prefer drinking in lively pubs however I understand people who hate the idea of that. It’s the reason why we have such a diverse hospitality sector in the U.K.

Re: The Turf pub
Exactly that, far too much snobbery about pubs, usually from those that never go out anyway. I remember when my old local shut down, hundreds moaned about another pubs shutting and what a great pub it was, literally 1-2 of them drank in there out of the hundreds moaning.

Beg to differ. Something like any of these but Burnley related would look fantastic. And brighten the place up.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 12:10 pmThat would be awful, and just ad to the cheap and tatty look of Yorkshire street

Each to their own.
As it stands. It’s a dump. Drab. Ugly.
Some artwork would at least improve the appearance and draw some attention.
That maradonna artwork as Jimmy mcilroy would be fantastic.

Anyway. On subject. Another improved pub can only be a good thing for the town and that part of town. The streets surrounding there are an absolute dump as well. With very little pride. From residents or businesses. It’s the main road into and out of town and the club.

Re: The Turf pub
Re the Turf, I always feel the " beer garden" let's it down a bit, not sure if it could be enlarged towards the RDS store but a simple polycarbonate roof structure would help as let's face it we do get quite a bit of rain.
I think its fantastic that people are prepared to invest in the area and like the Vintage claret really wish the people putting their money were our mouths are every success.

Re: The Turf pub
Some nice, hard wearing claret and blue paintwork on the bridge just not a mural there.
Would look nice on the side of the pub, however they are susceptable to scrotes with a spraycan

Re: The Turf pub
The Club/Bar was called Koko's down near the PoliceStation wasn't it? Battle Market sounds like a good pub name with Warstarter on Draught no doubtbf2k wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 4:12 pmYou never heard of Kiko's, wow? It was a very good function venue but possibly just slightly on the outskirts in terms of being successful for a bar. Where it was located it was competing with the Battle Market & Weatherspoons. Totally different clientele.
That said, nightlife in Burnley has changed so much over the last 10 years. It used to be bouncing Thursday, Friday & Saturday night. Even Sunday's weren't bad. Pre-pandemic you were lucky to get a queue at the bar from fewer bars (apart from Smacks which will always find a queue from somewhere ).

That’s the type of things that should be round the back of the Turf where the old bricked wall is that runs round the perimeter. ClaretTony posted a year or 2 ago about what we can do to improve things around the ground. Not sure where things now stand.cricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 12:46 amBeg to differ. Re: The Turf pub
The Culvert is an integral part of the Straight mile - I am pretty sure it is listed
The Culvert is made from Yorkshire Sandstone - it is one of the most beautiful building materials in the world
for some reason people in Burnley like to paint over stone - that is insane
The original architecture of Yorkshire street is actually quite attractive, what has been allowed to happen to it over the last 60 years is nothing short of criminal - frontages ripped out, tiles for christ's sake - instead of stone!!? The terrace that houses the 110 is one of the most beautiful in town ruined in the 70's
The one next to it with the doctors surgery has been suffering similar decline through inappropriate "investment" the town planning department has an awful lot to answer for in the last 70 years
huge modern shop-fronts and signage of zero architectural merit
UPVC bloody windows in traditional buildings - that is criminal too
so much that is wrong and I include the external appearance of the Vintage claret in that, in some ways it is worse than the news agents and taxi/takeways

Re: The Turf pub
the best place in town for something like this is the old P3 building on the Centenary way side - I have long thought it the most suitable spot for huge and iconic image in the manner you are suggesting - Part of the reason being it is an already rendered wall with only a couple of small windows that could be blocked up without significant impact to the Interiorcricketfieldclarets wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 12:46 amBeg to differ. Actually had that exact discussion in person with Tony. He was initially against it when he had read it but when we discussed it he agreed would look good.
I was actually involved in some initial discussions on something around that but work and life got in the way.

Re: The Turf pub
Where is the lad that can make beer and flog it for 50p a pop......this thread needs his input!
Re: The Turf pub
There seems to be a certain amount of snobbery nowadays associated with pubs and the type of beer they serve. Whilst it appears to be a popular haunt for posters on here The Bier Haus (SP) is a typical example. From its quasi Belgium name, its expensive bottled lagers to its clientele it all seems so terribly affected. It does cater for a type of clientele so it prospers
If only we could step back in time and revisit the Face Winds Club, the Dragoon or the Prince Albert and experience once again the convivial atmosphere of a real pub. I do not recall the Prince having a jukebox, a bandit or a TV and come to think of it not many women. What it did have was a group of hard-working hard-drinking men half of whom were accompanied by a little terrier sitting quietly at their master's feet whilst he played don. They were great places to learn how to drink and how to behave, if you overstepped the mark a quick slap straightened you out. The golden age of the pub, gone but not forgotten.
Just remembered the Ribble Club what a place that was . In the days of 3 pm closing it attracted the less savoury afternoon drinkers a strange choice of drinking hole as being opposite the Police Station the criminal fraternity was easy to find and apprehend. A good friend was steward there for a while and told many a great tale about the place. The landlord of the Bier Haus will not get far on his tales "remember the time when Eugene broke his fingernail"

Re: The Turf pub
FWIW, and you may or may not be looking at it, but the beer garden in the Turf is.....well let’s face it, it’s crap.
I didn’t used to think the Prinny was much better years ago either, but a few quid and some TLC have massively improved it. It’s always buzzing pre-match in the Royal Dyche when it’s not raining.
I also like the idea of murals to improve that side of the pub.
Good ale, good beer garden, good organisation serving the crowd in that 30 minutes after the final whistle and you’re onto a winner.

Re: The Turf pub
They could start by sandblasting all the stone buildings including the church and the Culvert .Then ripping out all the shopfronts opposite the pubs and replacing with new ones more in keeping..Completely resurface the road from the roundabout to the traffic lights.
Oh and while they are at it do something about the underpass at the roundabout, its an absolute disgrace and gives a really bad impression to visiors to the town.
