Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
Morning guys,
We were delighted to have Paul Weller on the podcast going through his career and have just put it up.
Paul gives the lowdown on Mullen, Heath, Waddle, Ternent and his exit from the club. Some absolutely cracking tales and a real peek behind the curtain of the Waddle era being particularly interesting!
Even if you don’t watch it (but please do, you’ll enjoy it!) make sure to pick up Paul’s book which releases on April 12th - all Paul’s royalties are being donated to the Gary Parkinson Trust.
Hope you enjoy it, and very happy to say we have Robbie Blake on with us this coming Monday.
Any questions for Robbie that you’d like us to put to him please let us know here!

Will give it a listen too tomorrow during work.
Questions for Robbie:
1. Do you still have the Bad Beat Bobs?
2. What was the main difference between Laws and Coyle? (Heard Clarke Carlisle's words on it, so curious to see if Robbie feels the same.)

Weller come accross as an arrogant tosser in the first 10 minutes or so. I had to switch it off.
Imagine calling Jimmy Mullen a goon. The man that got the ball rolling in all our success.

Re: Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
We’ve had some current players on from other clubs (Charlie Raglan from Cheltenham who gave some serious praise to Duff), as well as some current managers/Sky Sports presenters. What we’ve found with current players is that you have to get agreement from the clubs press officer etc. Had a couple have to back out due to that before - understandably so.
R.e Weller on Mullen, end of the day players won’t get on with every manager - that’s just a fact of life. He is overwhelming in praise of Inchy, had a good personal relationship with Waddle (although explains his flaws as a manager etc) and likewise Stan. We as fans will always love Jimmy Mullen for what he did for the club, but working with someone day to day is different obviously. I’d urge you to skip it a few minutes onto Heath onwards if you feel that way!

I don't expect him to get on with everyone, but he could have been respectful and just said we didn't get on.jedi_master wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 1:07 pmWe’ve had some current players on from other clubs (Charlie Raglan from Cheltenham who gave some serious praise to Duff), as well as some current managers/Sky Sports presenters. He would do well to remember that Jimmy did far more for this football club 'half drunk' than he did sober.

Great listen and the one thing he doesn’t come across as is an arrogant to55er, not sure where anyone gets that from. Enjoyed that and great to get a players perspective on what we all saw from the outside.

On things like this you want people to be honest in their opinions, I think he did that. I have been in conversations with a couple of ex players under Waddle. I don’t think you could put what they said on utube.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 1:26 pmI don't expect him to get on with everyone, but he could have been respectful and just said we didn't get on.

Plus that’s why people do these podcasts , to get opinions.

Re: Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
Don't think anything that was said could be argued against.
Cotterill telling him the night before his wedding day over the phone that he wasn't getting a new contract is pretty poor.
Waddle was never a manager but eventually made the right changes before it was too late. If anything, it came across that we had good, honest pros who didn't wanna be relegated and have that on their CV; some player pride got us through that season.
And he also admitted his own mistakes with not having an agent.
Pro football was/is a cut-throat business and in all the interviews from pie and pint you get that sense of insecurity of not having contracts, not playing, making good impressions, etc.
Always love the Burnley related ones but also good to hear of other players from other teams. Interestingly, not many Utd or Derby ex-players on representing the other presenters. Or have I missed some?

We’ve had Ben Thornley on from United, doing our best to get a few others as Josh hasn’t had that same feeling yet I’ve had of interviewing a hero!diamondpocket wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 2:54 pmDon't think anything that was said could be argued against.

We had Mark O’Brien on who played for Derby and recorded with Lee Morris last week (cracking guest was Lee, one of our best so far for sure!).
Thanks for watching too, it’s really appreciated.
Re: Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
Indeed! I’m working hard on getting some ex United players on, but they’ve not been as receptive as the Burnley lads so far (Ben Thornley aside).jedi_master wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 2:57 pmWe’ve had Ben Thornley on from United, doing our best to get a few others as Josh hasn’t had that same feeling yet I’ve had of interviewing a hero!

We’ve also got Stephen Bywater on next week, another ex Derby.

The difference being he gave his honest opinion having worked with someone for a few years whereas you gave yours based on ten minutes of a podcast.

Thanks, must have missed them. Liked the goalkeeper, cant remember his name, who does the youtube channel. And big Lloyd Owusu and Martin Carruthers. We're more or less the same age and love listening to these back in the day lower league legends.jedi_master wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 2:57 pmWe’ve had Ben Thornley on from United, doing our best to get a few others as Josh hasn’t had that same feeling yet I’ve had of interviewing a hero!

Gotta get Lee Grant on then! Anymore who've have played for all three?
Luke Chadwick would be cool with Utd / Burnley connection or even Chris Eagles.

Re: Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
Enjoyable hour. I never really knew what position he preferred in the team and I imagine a breakdown of positions he played for the first team would be quite varied. Gazza's 'little brown suitcase' sounds intriguing! Like many on here, no doubt, I was at Brammal Lane the day he 'played' for us ( Weller and Little both missing through injury) and still wonder how he had 'prepared' for that game. One of the most bizarre individual performances I think I've ever seen.

Re: Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
What I’ve never understood is how it was left to Cotterill. Weller was one of a number of players not offered a deal at the end of the previous season at which time Stan was still manager. There were three other players left in limbo too if I recall correctly. That should never have happened.diamondpocket wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 2:54 pmDon't think anything that was said could be argued against.

Re: Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
doesn't matter who is interviewed on these things, there will always be players who detest other players and the managers, probably irrelevant about the timing of his wedding phone call. that would be of no consequence to a new manager. overall though, a good listen. I like him on the local radio too with his summaries.

I really enjoyed that and yes, he says a few rather blunt things, but he always seems to be being totally honest and not simply saying stuff for effect. He says how certain people or events came across to him personally and does say that for others who were there it might have been different. Interesting stuff.

Got to be the best turnaround in our recent history though. From 'Casper Out' sung all the time to the whole club riding the crest of the wave. Jimmy Mullens Claret and Blue Armada set sail.

Maybe they preferred the comfy life under Frank Casper. You know, the one that never looked like getting us out of the 4th Division. I would prefer my club to be managed by someone who wasn't popular with the players but delivered results than one of the boys who delivered nothing but failure. If you could have success and popularity then you have the best of both worlds, if I had to choose one then the manager wouldn't win any popularity contests.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 7:07 pmIt would spoil it - I was shocked when I spoke to them about it.

Jimmy Mullin should have been sacked after his interview on RL after the Luton away game in September 94 , when it was quite evident he had been drinking.
He went on to out stay his welcome by a further 18 months and in which time we were hurtling towards 4th tier football once again
From a hero in some peoples eyes, Mullen could have turned into the devel but for Teasdale finally coming to his senses and sacking him

He had to go after that 5-0 thrashing at Carlisle in the auto windscreen, one of the worst performances I have ever seen from a Burnley sideQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 1:04 pmMullen was sacked from Burnley in February 96.
After fans had protested against the board.

Re: Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
I'm sure I've read (or heard) that Jimmy Mullen doesn't hold Burnley FC or the folk around it (including us lot) in very high regard and probably wouldn't be queuing up to chat about his time at the club, but I could be wrong. Personally I remember thinking at the time that, after being totally angry at his initial appointment which smacked of penny pinching and lacked imagination, he was absolutely brilliant and became a hero/legend, giving us some superb times watching the Clarets and we hadn't had times like those in years and years. It was really, really sad that in the end it all fizzled away to acrimony and mud slinging and I think 2 things were to blame. When we were promoted to what is now the Championship we really needed more and better investment and the board didn't really back him. His 2 main signings were Vinnicome and Robinson. One was a good player, but got badly injured quite early and missed a whole chunk of the season and the other was plain awful. Other than that we tried to go with what we had until it was way too late and we went down. The second mistake was that he and the board didn't shake hands at that point and call it a day as he stayed on too long and ended up presiding over a mess which was in danger of taking us right back to where he'd started and that tarnished the whole of his tenure unfortunately.jedi_master wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 2:00 pmHopefully one day we could get the likes of John Deary, Super Johnny Francis etc on, maybe even Jimmy himself.

Story has it that he offered way more than Rangers wanted for Vinnicombe and they asked him if he was serious. So he upped the offer. He tried to sign a striker from Bristol City. They said no but he could have Robinson. We signed him.
They weren’t his two signings though. He signed Winstanley, Harper & Harrison before the season started and quickly brought in Gayle. He decided Deary, Pender, Farrell etc. weren’t going to be good enough. Deary & Pender did play a few games but Farrell didn’t play for us again after Wembley.

Re: Paul Weller - Pie and a Pint Podcast
I remember doing my pre match drinks run and as i passed the home dressing room it went dark. I looked up to see John Gayle in front of me. I didn't know we had signed him until i got the team sheet before kick off. Not the best player we signed and didn't cover himself in glory with the challenge on Spooner in the Bolton game a few weeks later. I couldn't believe we let Pender go when i saw how poor Winstanley was, same with Deary and Harper. The only one who went on to be half decent was Gerry Harrison.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 2:33 pmStory has it that he offered way more than Rangers wanted for Vinnicombe and they asked him if he was serious.
