Re: The Longside
Happy days Ian the young lads that follow us nowadays missed out on a proper game experience with not being able to stand on a terrace, standing in front of a seat isn't actually the same, used to love being at the top end of the Longside ....and after a surge after we scored being somewhere in the middle looking for your mates
On another note I asked a few of the lads if they knew were SJ is these days,no one came up with an answer, hes disappeared off the face of the earth.

Re: The Longside
Bernard Rothwell was always playing with the keep off the grass sign
The only Director that was really nice to us around that time was Bob Blakeborough.

Re: The Longside
You know bud you can keep seating and ‘nice’ toilets and ‘decent’ food, nobody will ever convince me there is a better match day experience than the one you describe. As far as Stuart is concerned I hope nothing has happened because he was about 4 years older than me which would make him 71/72 now. Enough of the old gang are gone.Steve1956 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 11:10 amHappy days Ian the young lads that follow us nowadays missed out on a proper game experience with not being able to stand on a terrace, standing in front of a seat isn't actually the same, used to love being at the top end of the Longside ....and after a surge after we scored being somewhere in the middle looking for your mates

You know mate when this virus shite is all over one of my bucket list ‘to-do’s is to meet up with you for a game. 40 odd years is just too long.

Re: The Longside
The last time I saw him (about 40 years ago) he was working as a bouncer in a basement club under a pub in Colne. He was one of the reasons 6 of us got arrested after a game away to Spurs (lost 4-0 I think). We left the ground early and he just kept battering anyone with a Spurs scarf. This lead to the coach being attacked and we responded by throwing bottles. The brilliant driver of the Central B coach waited for ages till we were let out of the cells.
My dad had to travel down to London with me the next Monday cos I was only 16. He wasn’t best pleased.

Re: The Longside
Yep. I was there and at the Peterborough game a few days earlier.durhamclaret wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 11:43 amBFC v Colchester Tues 4th Nov 1986
Attendance 1686 yes one thousand six hundred and eighty six!
I have to admit that I wasn’t one of those loyal souls.
Who was there?
I didn't get on again until New Years Day and that 0-3 defeat to Rochdale. I didn't think it could get much worse so went on the next home game against Hereford...

Re: The Longside
Used to hang out with Illy, Henry and Banny etc on match days, great times they were, then on the Sunday playing footy for the pub teams in the Nelson Sunday league against each other, Illy used to play in goal, forget which team it was for, think it was for the Sunspot for Stan, in fact wasn't to bad a goalie if truth be told...(I played for the shooters at the time)
By the way the Bernard Rothwell which has been mentioned, is it the same one who played cricket for Jimmy Nelsons was a bowler who more or less chucked the ball and not bowled it over arm...great bloke taught me lots while playing for them at the time ...

Former councillor & magistrate in Pendle. Would have been 87 or 88 now. I don’t know if he ever played cricket.slough claret wrote: ↑Fri Mar 26, 2021 12:51 pmBy the way the Bernard Rothwell which has been mentioned, is it the same one who played cricket for Jimmy Nelsons was a bowler who more or less chucked the ball and not bowled it over arm...great bloke taught me lots while playing for them at the time ...

ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 3:03 pmYou must have been posting this while I was posting mine. Yes, Taffy & Billy Rod but also Joe Gallagher and Jimmy T. Appalling from two bob millionaire Rothwell who was so pompous and full of self importance.
Yes, Rochdale. It's hard explaining to someone who sees that the next home game was a 6-0 loss against Hereford that this was actually much, much worse. I will always wonder how on earth Dusty kept us up that season.
Re: The Longside
Arnie was one hell of a Longside character in the late seventies early eighties, apparently away from the Turf he was a gentle giant according to one of my mates who knew him really well.
