Post by Woodleyclaret » Mon Apr 05, 2021 8:20 am

First by a mile with a season spend of £1m on super sub Dale ,Burnley in the Premier league.
Stanley with a minuscule budget surviving in league one. Feel free to add others

I'd say Barnsley and Luton in the Championship; Lincoln in League One; and Cheltenham and Barrow in League Two.

Stand out by a mile were Sheff Utd last season. I hoped they could spring back next season like Norwich look like doing this season but not so sure now after they parted with Wilder. You only have to look at us and Norwich to see what having faith in your manager can do.

Preston have been in the Championship for ages and so beating Blackburn isnt really that much of an achievement for them

No I think he was saying Preston have over achieved like Wycombe for getting in the Championship and beating Blackburn. I dont think he realises that Preston have been in the Championship for ages.

The post wasn't very clear so I can see how it could be read both ways

Presume it was about Wycombe beating Preston in the league and stuffing them in FA cup.

That would have made more sense but dont think thats what was meant with the post.

If I was the poster Id pretend thats what I meant as now I have pointed out the flaws in the original intended meaning it would save face a little

Similar to the other thread from all 4 divisions my selections.

PL- West Ham: an easy one this Moyes has done a fabulous job of lifting them from relegation fodder to genuine top 4 contenders.

Champ- Barnsley: again a brilliant job by their manager on a miniscule budget, and they'll struggle to hold onto him if they don't get promoted this term.

League 1- Stanley: John Coleman has worked miracles at Stanley for years now, and he keeps producing gems on a pittance.

League 2- Morecambe: they've had a similar journey to Stanley coming through the non-league pyramid, and just like their neighbours have surpassed expectations.

I THOUGHT Barnsley had had some pretty major investment, but maybe I'm mistaken. If that's the case it has to be Luton for me.

Most already mentioned - Barnsley, Stanley, Cheltenham and Barrow - I'd add Blackpool (given current operating conditions) and Cambridge to the list

There's no other club that comes close to Burnley in terms of over-achieving. Stanley maybe, but I'm not sure how much Andy Holt backs them financially. Lincoln also look like they're doing better than one might expect, but again they've got owners who have put in a fair bit of money.

I don't see how we are over achieving, our squad is the same as it was last season with the exception of Brownhill replacing Hendrick. A few seasons ago we were over achieving today we have a wage bill which is comparable with our league position and a squad full of seasoned premier league players most of whom have played over a hundred games at this level.

West Ham, Barnsley, Accrington and Lincoln, Cambridge and Morecambe.
Cheltenham over achieved last season and continue to do so. I really hope that they can get it over the line this time.

We are over-achieving because we are a relatively small club financially, have achieved promotion to the Premier League, and have stayed in the Premier League for five seasons without any substantial outside support from a wealthy benefactor. No other club of similar financial stature has ever achieved that. Several have tried but they have all come unstuck. Hence over-achieving.

2020-2021 wage bill

1 Manchester United F.C. £177,775,000
2 Manchester City F.C. £136,529,000
3 Liverpool F.C. £135,974,000
4 Chelsea F.C. £132,750,000
5 Arsenal F.C. £130,729,273
6 Tottenham Hotspur F.C. £129,175,200
7 Crystal Palace £84,984,000
8 Everton F.C. £84,051,000
9 Leicester City £73,675,000
10 West Ham United F.C. £69,200,000
11 Newcastle United F.C. £56,946,200
12 Aston Villa F.C. £52,311,396
13 Fulham F.C. £52,098,800
14 Southampton F.C. £49,642,000
15 Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. £49,547,000
16 Brighton & Hove Albion £43,201,333
17 Burnley F.C. £35,474,000
18 West Bromwich Albion F.C. £23,777,200
19 Leeds United F.C. £22,464,800
20 Sheffield United F.C. £19,708,800

We are over achieving to a point ,but we’re generally just a fairly poor prem team with a great manager . Double Dyches budget then we’d get a true picture .

The over-achievement is in terms of being able to have that wage bill at all. No other club of our size is able to do that without an external benefactor.

What is this trying to say? is it a 4, 5 or 6 months of wages before bonuses?

just look at Leeds, a club whose 2019/20 Accounts released at the weekend says that they are to pay £35m in bonuses this season if the club remain in the Premier League

Where do those numbers come from? The accounts tell a different story, our wage bill was around 27 million when we got promoted (plus 13m promotion costs). Since then 2017 - 61m, 2018 - 81m, 2019 - 86m, 2020 - 100m (for 13 months).
so Dyche has almost tripled the wage bill and we're arguably no better than we were when it was 61m.

Our wage bill is bigger than Wolves' and Newcastle's according to Swiss Ramble.

The previous board over achieved to get us where we are. Currently we are not over achieving given our finances.

It looks like something they get from Football Manager.
