If you could change just one Burnley result ,which one ?

Post by bfcjg » Mon Apr 05, 2021 9:32 am

For me the semi final defeat v Newcastle. A Wembley appearance and I am sure we would have beaten Liverpool.
I thought the result away at Crewe prior to the Orient game but that result didn't affect our ultimate survival.
The Spurs result at home but that wasn't the magic of the FA cup.

Agree with the 1974 semi Final defeat. That '74 side deserved to be remembered with a Cup Final appearance.

18th Dec 1994 - Burnley 0 v 3 Middlesbrough. If I could change one Burnley result it would be this one as the defeat really ruined my Christmas that year

The last game of the 2001-02 season and getting that extra goal to make the play offs.

If we were to limit this to this season, it would be the defeat at Leeds. Change it to Leeds U 0 Burnley 1.

Hamburg 4 Burnley 1. Make it 3-2. We should have been in the semi-finals, and then who knows.

Look on the positive side, at least you know the answer to the pub quiz question, " Who are the only top-flight Club ever to have lost twice at home in the FA Cup to Non-League opposition? " :D

The Orient game.

I would have liked to seen what would have happened had we lost. Riots; Burnley go bust; biggest team ever in non league......

Losing the Cup Final to Spurs.
What still rankles with me about the Newcastle semi defeat is that they should have been ejected after their Q-F with Forest. 1-3 down with less than 20 mins to go and match abandoned for a pitch invasion. Ridiculous they were allowed to stay in the competition and Forest weren’t even given home advantage for the replay, it was played at Goodison. Forest were Div.2 and we’d have beaten them, I’d hope.

In my lifetime, probably the last minute extra time goal from Roman Pavlyuchenko. It was an absolutely sensational performance that night and we were just seconds away from a domestic cup final. Many, including me, now refer to that game as a catalyst for our promotion that season, but I still think we’d have gone up, regardless.

Magnus Hedman saved two great free kicks. He didn’t follow the script for Gazza to score...

Given our form in the second half of the season I don't think I would have been to confident of our chances in the play offs but had we got in, who knows?

You’re probably right, I think it would’ve changed Gascoigne’s reputation as a Burnley player though. Taking Burnley into the play-offs would’ve been a nice achievement for Stan too.

Wigan away 20th March 2010, turn the 1-0 defeat to a 1-0 Victory. Both us and Wigan both end the season on 33pts and we stay up on goal difference.

If that had happened, maybe Dyche wouldn't have joined us, and we would be in the Championship at best.

Newcastle semi final and
League Cup semi vs Spurs where I felt we were hard done by in the first leg to be 4-1 down
In the second leg at Turf Moor when we went 3-0 the stadium was rocking - I didn’t know about that our away goal didn’t count so was gutted when it went to extra time and you kinda knew they would get a goal then as we gave everything in the 90 minutes.

There are many, most mentioned above. One that sticks out is the FA cup semifinal at Hillsborough. Winning that would have set us up for a final with Liverpool, so could have been a bigger disappointment, but always thought we would have performed better than Newcastle.

Semi final 1974.
I don’t know if we deserved to win or not but it was the most disappointed I have ever been at a footy match.
We could have been at Wembley for a cup final during an era when such things were huge events.

Two more results I’d like to change are in the FA Cup again:
Rossendale Utd 1-4 Bolton Wanderers.
Rossendale Utd 0-1 Shrewsbury Town

SVT final 88 and the loss to Wolves, it was a great occasion to attend, marred only by the poor result, even if it probably was expected.

Thus far that's been the only time I've seen Burnley at Wembley, I wasn't able to make the 94 or 09 PO finals, and our other Wembley appearances were long before my birth.

Cup Final against Spurs at Wembley. I'd seen us win the league at Maine Road in 1960 and to win the second biggest competition would have added to the glory of that great team.

That's a good choice. I thought that side was pretty good as far as individual players go. Perhaps Casper would have stayed as manager, along with Laws, but not Trevor Steven of course - he was leaving anyway wasn't he.

However we would have missed all the excitement of the first half of the following season - Bond, transfers, some super performances. So perhaps instead of results we could choose injuries that did not occur - in this case Kevin Reeves - that's another thread perhaps.

1959/60 fa cup ..Burnley 3 Bastids 3.A game we absolutely threw away ..we lost the replay 2-0 and Bastids went on to get to Wembley although they got hammered 4-1 in the final.

Yes, it's 1974 and Newcastle for me, too.

Went with my Dad and was sardined in the Leppings Lane End. I was absolutely gutted at the end, but that roar the Geordies made when they scored will live with me forever.

Swindon came second, but I was younger, it was the League Cup and it didn't quite hurt the same.

That Swindon semi final was the best chance we've had of reaching a final in my time watching. Not sure how we didn't win the tie over two legs never mind three😳

The away game at Ipswich. If we’d have beaten them and all other results remained we’d have won another league title in 1962.

I concur without the slightest hesitation that it has to be Newcastle at Hillsborough. THE worst I have ever felt after a match.

SVT final 88. A great day spoiled by the result. It would’ve been great to win something a year after the Orient game. I was also there in 94 and 09 but it’d be fantastic to win a cup final at Wembley for the first time.

Culmclaret's is a good shout. I was at Selhurst Park that night - it was hugely disappointing that a team with so much potential went down (narrowly) at the first attempt and lost some great developing talent as a result

It really was a grim downward spiral from then until the Orient game 5 years later

Newcastle '74 for me, Honourable mention for Swindon Dec' 68 though.
The Swindon defeat was gut wrenching for me...I was 21 on the Day of the Newcastle defeat....and said nothing thinking we'd all be celebrating a Burnley win...I was Empty of any Emotion after seeing Supermac put us to the Sword. To play at Wembley back then was so Special. The quarter final Defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt....was the only game we Lost and went out. The old smoke filled cricketfield end Was rocking that night.

We hit the woodwork twice against Newcastle in the FA Cup semi-final and McFaul pulled off a genuine world-class save to deny Frank Casper.
