If you could change just one Burnley result ,which one ?
Re: If you could change just one Burnley result ,which one ?
Absolutely has to be the Newcastle semi final for a number of reasons. My one and only ejection by the polis was at the Swindon semi final too.

I was thinking that game against Coventry when Hedman kept out Gazza's free kicks. I've opted from a purely selfish point of view for the Sherpa Van final. That was a painfully long drive back from Wembley for a 15 year old me.
Re: If you could change just one Burnley result ,which one ?
Perhaps I should have started the thread with 5 results, maybe another one would have been the Torquay play off result away then the plane banner the bstards flew over the Turf would have been as stupid as their pronunciation of bus.

I was thinking Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Burnley 4th May 1987. Win that and we are safe. No Orient game. But then without the Orient game, would there have been the awakening of the town and lapsed supporters to just how bad the situation was and we would have been in the same position the following season.....
Re: If you could change just one Burnley result ,which one ?
The league cup semi v Spurs in 2009 for me but then it could have had a knock on effect in the league. We also had a Wembley trip anyway. Other than that scoring that extra goal to make the play offs. So close on both occasions
I can imagine for many it would be the Newcastle semi or Swindon match if there.

Just a few weeks short of my 8th birthday, sat in the stand with my brother and 3-0 up v Blackburn in the 6th round of the FA Cup in 1960. Only 17 minutes left and it all went wrong leading to a replay that we lost. Could have been the 'double' that year, one year before the great Spurs team achieved it.

And it could well have been the double two years later.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 1:04 pmJust a few weeks short of my 8th birthday, sat in the stand with my brother and 3-0 up v Blackburn in the 6th round of the FA Cup in 1960. We'd still have needed to get something from the Orient game in case Torquay and Lincoln won.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 10:51 amI was thinking Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Burnley 4th May 1987. That Crewe game was the most depressing Burnley game I've been to. I hope some of their fans that danced around on the pitch at the end, laughing at us, remember that match when they've seen us beating Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal etc in the Premier League.

For me the 74 Semi final defeat is the one. That result hurt. I still blame Norman Hunter for that foul on Casper at Leeds. Casp wasn't 100% fit for the semi. With a fully fit Casper we'd have won and gone on to win the cup. I can still get angry about it all. The day after the semi I flew out to join a ship in Bombay. Nearly all the engineers on board were Geordies and of course took the pi** relentlessly out of me for weeks on end.

Funny when i saw the thread the Newcastle game jumped out at me , boy what a let down that was as the idea of going to Wembley was so over powering you could touch it .
Hey on a side note on 25 years watching Galway United and 3 semi Finals defeats to Harps , Longford and Shels i would love to see United in an FAI Cup Final , hey the dream lives on .

Captain, didn't you at least have the last laugh when they got stuffed in the final?

Funny that, I was thinking this a couple of weeks ago and nearly started thread: what if the Orient game hadn't happened?Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Tue Apr 06, 2021 10:51 amI was thinking Crewe Alexandra 1-0 Burnley 4th May 1987. Attendances grew around 300% the following season, a number of new player were bought (Farrell, Comstive, Pearce Davis, Oghani) and we ended the season with 30,000 fans at Wembley The foundations for promotion in 1992 were being slowly laid.
Had we been safe with a game to play, would anybody that happened?

Re: If you could change just one Burnley result ,which one ?
As someone pointed out we would still have needed something v Orient in case Lincoln and Torquay both won. But i feel that it wouldn't have had the same impact, the same draw that brought a crowd ten times that of our lowest attendance that season when our club really needed it. Burnley are safe if Torquay and Lincoln both lose, safe if they draw and Lincoln draw and guaranteed to be safe with a win just doesn't share the narrative that the Orient game brought - we have to win and rely on others not doing so. As horrible a situation we found ourselves in, it was the catalyst for what came after, regardless of how long it took us to get to where we are now. Better signings, Wembley in the SVT, winning the 4th division 5 years later, play off winners in 1994, promotion again in 2000 and then the Premier League experiences.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 11:53 amFunny that, I was thinking this a couple of weeks ago and nearly started thread: what if the Orient game hadn't happened?

So i don't think i would go back and change the Crewe result, simply because indirectly it led to the recovery of Burnley Football Club.

Although I was at Wembley in 1962, I would probably say the second leg of the League Cup v Spurs. I remember counting down the seconds to the final whistle, then Spurs scored !! What a disappointment after such a magnificent second leg performance.....I also attended the first leg at White Hart Lane.

We listened to it on the BBC World Service and I had mixed feelings because I've never liked Liverpool in the first place so it was not really something to celebrate

I never thought I’d see us play in Europe. So, aside from more obvious choices, I’m going to say Olympiakos. We had a fantastic time anyway, but imagine what it would have been like had we won.

Understood.
I've never liked Liverpool much either, but watched the final and was glad to see them outplay Newcastle. Yet there was the feeling meanwhile that we would not have been so easy.

Spurs semi final - no need to change the result. Just have away goals and we’re through aren’t we????

It's an interesting question. I've been supporting Burnley since 87 and over the last few years there have been gutting moments but then followed up by us achieving something anyway. The Spurs semi was gut wrenching, but would we have gone up if we had been concentrating on a cup final? David Dunn offside equaliser was awful, but it made it even more sweeter when we beat them the following year.
I think if anything, over the last 30 or so years on our journey back from the depths of despair, we have mainly delivered when it mattered. Wembley 94 and 09, sticking the landing to promotions in 99/00 and 2014 etc. Imagine being a Preston fan with 6 failed play off attempts or Derby who bottle it at every opportunity. We have a lot to be thankful for.

Yeah - in front of a crowd of less than 5,000 that indicated exactly how important that was!Clarets4me wrote: ↑Wed Apr 07, 2021 10:09 pmAt least we finished 3rd in the FA Cup that season ....
