And we've still got Fulham and Sheff Utd away. Squeaky bum time as I don't expect many points theregiveusaB wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 2:12 pmWe are where we are because in that mini league at the bottom we have lost twice to Newcastle twice to Southampton drawn twice with wba and Brighton and a draw against Fulham. The only team we beat was Sheffield Utd.It’s great winning at Liverpool,Arsenal and Everton but we have to beat teams around us.

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
Poor management. We didn't respond to the substitution. Normally, it is because of a lack of choices going forward but this was about dealing with a threat. We had Cork, Taylor, Stephens on that bench and it is possible to tactically negate Maximin's qualities with those players. Just shite from us.
Put Taylor on for Dwight and ask Pieters to man mark him. It happened in the first game this season; just allowing him the run of the pitch is ******* embarrassing. Last week ****** me off but this is worse because we have just been ruined by a one man team.

Dyche identifies the transfer targets, Dyche picks the team , Dyche decides the tactics and yet Garlick is blamed.

Matters not one jot who Dyche identifies if Mike isn’t willing to realease the funds and gets deals over the line.
It’s Garlick’s fault. Thankfully he’ll soon be back to being a fan.

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
Yet both goals we were wide open? Don't think we were defending a lead let's say. 2nd half we came out quite forward thinking with lots of corners. Our play wasn't sitting back, we were going for the 2nd as they were there for the taking and look hapless going forward until the subs.timshorts wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 2:09 pmWe needed to put in a second before wilson and St max were let onto the pitch, but after going 1 up, sat back rather too much.
I don't think we can blame the central midfield too much. Newcastle out-burnleyed us at the back after going one down putting their bodies on the line blocking shot after shot. They got a bit lucky at times.
But, Cork needs to return to the starting lineup as we look a lot better with him. That would have been emphasised today given the Newcastle's starting cm pair is the worst in the league.
We've not been fortunate to get to play Southampton just after ings got fit and Newcastle today just when their front 3 were back from injury, as without those players both teams have been dropping like stones.
JBG looks ready to move inside a la Wade Elliott. We really need to sort out a decent new wide player as a priority.
Agreed they defended well once in front. Maybe we should've gone that way and played on the counter but like England in most tournaments get sucked into thinking we're in control and bang the opposition go and get a quick few goals and we're out. We're only good enough when we defend leads. We should have camped in, ground out the 3 points and say thanks very much, this season we're safe!
Very poor day!

Very disappointing. Does Dyche have any confidence with the players on the bench. By his late sub, suggest to me he doesn’t or that he can not come up with a plan B. No change in formation following Newcastle’s 2nd goal. Our play in the 2nd half was slow and predictable, with no quality. Major rebuild required, but will Dyche be backed financially to do this.

Alternatively let’s have a hissy fit because one player did what we already know he can do, and throw our toys out of the pram before seeing what the summer brings. We have had a poor season under conditions that would have seen most clubs relegated by now... but we’re still here. Like I said get a grip.Longsidebogs wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 2:11 pmYou don’t agree? Ok then....let’s wait for the next transfer window eh? Or perhaps you think spending 1 MIO in two windows, on Dale Effie Stephens will cut it. We are invincible, and can stay in the Premier League forever, without any investment at all. Ok then!

Maybe we have the answer on the bench in Dale Stephens, a defensive midfielder who should have come on as soon as St Maximum set foot on that pitch to shield the back four from runs like that. He needed to be forced wide and back ourselves to defend crosses, like they did against us. We had the lead and a point would not have been a disaster today, it was always going to give them a massive boost when the pair came on and we just sat back and watched.

Not nervy at all. It’s very obvious we will stay up this time. Next season is when we will go down. Unless there is huge investment, which i don’t think the new owners can afford? They borrowed 40 million off Mike Garlick to complete the purchase of BFC. I guarantee that these yanks won’t be out of pocket regardless.

That’s total ******** - typical of the over-emotional sh!te that gets posted on here whenever we get beat. Fulham haven’t earned the 33 points we have on the board, we have, and we will win enough more by the end of this season to have ensured survival in any other.jedi_master wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 1:55 pmF/T
Let’s hope Fulham keep us up because we won’t do it for ourselves.
Yes, the quality was lacking after we went behind, and the total lack of options is a concern - hopefully the new regime will address that in the summer - but to suggest we’re staying up as a result of others’ short comings is just not true.

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
I personally would have taken Wood off, gone to 4 5 1 with DS in front of the back 4, taken Brownhill off for Cork for the extra legs and energy and relied on Vyds and Dwight to try and carry us up the pitch when we got chance. The middle of the park needed flooding to close the space to prevent exactly what happened, space for St Maximum to run at us..

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
It's easy to think in hindsight but Dyche probably believed we had enough in us after last week to make sure we defended our lead. By bringing on a defensive sub we also would be less likely to score.
The tactics were wrong but only our insistence to hoof the ball. We could have made a defensive sub and still lost.

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
I like the thinking, and probably with hindsight a good option. Trouble is, by the time we’re 2-1 down it’s too late, and Dyche won’t switch it around if it’s working - which it was up till they scored their first.Andreshotboots wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 2:40 pmI personally would have taken Wood off, gone to 4 5 1 with DS in front of the back 4, taken Brownhill off for Cork for the extra legs and energy and relied on Vyds and Dwight to try and carry us up the pitch when we got chance. I would have brought Cork on for Dwight who i thought looked a bit leggy again .. I would of spread the 3 with Brownhill man marking

An ageing squad doesn't help. It's going to take a good amount of cash to get in the type of quality we're desperate for. Our problems are of our own making. I have to agree that once St Maximum was coming on we should have made some changes. Also we must start to do better from corners. I couldn't understand why Brownhll in the first half took the free kick, you just knew where it was going, he does it every time. We folded again from the start of the second half and paid the price.

We allowed their star man all the space he needed to turn the game. Agreed, hindsight is easy, but i did say it at the time when he came on..you could also argue, the longer we kept it quiet, the longer they would have to go, the less effective St Maximum would become..that first impact 15 minutes or so when he came on were vital, and we just sat back and watched him turn the game on its head.

Change doesn't always mean change personal.
You can change the system
You can change the shape
You can change the mind set
You can change the defensive height
You can change things when infront against side that has just introduced its 2 most influential players. Even if ots just for 5 or 10 mins to see if it changes their impetus in the game. We were not chasing the game. We were in control. They changed it we stood still and boom . Fair play to Bruce on that one but it could have been avoided for the 2nd wk running .

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
Dyche does identify the targets doesn’t mean he gets them, Dawson & Lansbury never arrived will be plenty of others, dyche is partly culpable, if you ask for something doesn’t necessarily mean you get it. There’s a 2 win buffer & draw with no reply & a game in hand to our advantage.
Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
Exactly and if he'd changes things when they brought their 2 subs on and then we'd lost, he'd be criticised for changing things. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

We wouldn't of lost. It's what we are good at. Soaking up game at 1-0.
It's been like that for yrs under dyche. You know that
Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
Not sure just how you know that, as presumably even the manager didn't, otherwise he would have made changes! But what changes would you have made to be sure that we wouldn't have lost?alboclaret wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 5:24 pmWe wouldn't of lost. It's what we are good at. Soaking up game at 1-0.

I know what you mean but I'm just saying we only think this now because of Hindsight. We could have bought someone on and he could still have scored two goals.Andreshotboots wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 2:53 pmWe didn't need to score again though, they did and

Problem was the players on the pitch didn't do a good enough job marking him..be that Pieters/McNeil or Tarkowski. Dyche thought we'd be okay, I'm sure he will ponder why he didn't make a change after the match, but at that time he wanted to put faith in who we had on the pitch after what happened last week.

The first was on one of those where the Burnley defenders' shape is such that they leave the shot for the keeper, as the angle is relatively difficult. Hit it well though.

I think the bench shows our worst problems-no proper striker, and no one really better than what was already playing. I think to be in the PL its shocking to see the inexperience on that bench

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Match Day Thread
Well safe to say we weren't in it until the subs came on. Against Spurs we pressed high up the pitch, we peppered their box with crosses and didn't let them settle. Against you we should have pressed high up the pitch, played the ball on the deck into the box and stop the ball getting to Vydra (who was your biggest threat).
Your defence just gobbled up all the aimless long balls and lofted crosses, we weren't aggressive enough in the middle and our defending for your goal was embarrassing.
Letter of the law, it should have been a penalty for Tarkowski's reckless high boot on Longstaff. SL wasn't stooping, and Tarkowski could have headed it, rather than kicking that high. That argument is backed up by a similar high boot resulting in a direct free kick later on in the second half. I'd have been annoyed if we'd just got an indirect-freekick, but I was livid that we didn't get the spot kick. That said, if we'd gone in 1-1, I'm not sure Bruce would have made the changes we obviously needed as early as he did.
ASM changed the game, we stopped aimlessly booting it for Joelinton to lumber after, got the ball down and tried to play a bit. Goal, an assist, and could have set one up for Almiron had it not been for an excellent bit of defending by Tarkowski.
Seen a bit of criticism for Dyche, but he had our number until the substitutions. At that point he's got tired legs, and limited options from the bench, right? I've a lot of sympathy for him as, from an outsiders perspective, he's done very well with limited funds. If he can afford to bring in a few special players he'll, at the very least, have more options?
Good luck for the rest of the season
