Penalty for dangerous play?
Penalty for dangerous play?
Since at least three ex-pro footballers and two commentators thought it at least possible that Newcastle should have had a penalty for dangerous play, I have checked the rules. Dangerous play is still an indirect free kick, not a penalty.
If Tarkowski had actually kicked Longstaff, it could have been a penalty. If he missed him, it couldn't.

Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
It cancelled out the pen Ben Mee should have had when he was kicked on the calf.

Actually it shows how absurd refereeing is nowadays that either was even considered as a penalty.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 3:07 pmIt cancelled out the pen Ben Mee should have had when he was kicked on the calf.

Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
You see defenders clear those sort of balls all the time in a game. He coulsnt see Longstaff so not sure how it could be constituted as dangerous.
The reason the commentary team werent interested in it in real time is that it was clearly Tarkowski who was most in control of the situation and had absolutely every right to play the ball.
As Dyche said post match also the Vydra moment at the end could have been twisted to argue it should have been a pen - he was studs up and caught him after the ball was played.....
Same with the Mee one, Dummet kicked through him.
None of them penalties as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
Nothing was given for that challenge, but it should have been a penalty as Pickford collided with VVD, so the infringement wasn’t dangerous play. As dsr points out, Tarkowski didn’t touch his opponent so as far as I’m aware a penalty couldn’t have been awarded.

Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
The one thing the 'experts' failed to highlight was that Tarkowski only ever looked at the ball and followed it round as he kicked it, eyes fixed on it. He can't have known a Newcastle player was coming in head first and nor should he have avoided clearing it for that reason.
If the player comes in with his head, he knows he is likely to get clattered especially in the box. By a boot / arm / fist / head.
Another stupid way the game is being ruined. Tarkowski only ever looked to play the ball.

Life ban!
Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
As above. None of the incidents amounted to anything and yet media and often, referees, make alternative decisions.
He touched him...every right to go down etc.
Son yesterday should be banned for the rest of the season. So should the referee and the car for even thinking it was anything other than blatant cheating.

Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
Long staff was going for the ball, looking at it knowing Tarkowski was clearing it his first duty is to himself he should have avoided going for a stupid header.

Var needed binning along with failed ref Walton who wants removing from the airwaves along with Talk shite reporting
Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
Surely overhead kicks are 'dangerous ' play then.

Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
Commentator says let's bring in Peter Walton and you know you are in for some nonsense. "A clear yellow card," he said to back up the ref who gave such a card to Liam Cooper. Then VAR gets ref to look again and he's sent off. Walton backs the decision. Please let's not bring in Peter Walton.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 10:59 amVar needed binning along with failed ref Walton who wants removing from the airwaves along with Talk shite reporting

I thought if applying the law to the letter, something that is constantly rammed down our throats from every conceivable angle, it should have been an indirect free kick!

Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
If Tarks made contact with the Newcastle player then by the letter of the law its a direct free kick (pen) and if he didnt make contact with the play its an indirect free kick for dangerous play.THEWELLERNUT70 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 12:22 pmI thought if applying the law to the letter, something that is constantly rammed down our throats from every conceivable angle, it should have been an indirect free kick!
On a couple of other points made above it makes no difference if Tarks is going for the ball, wins the ball and whether he knows the other player is there or not for whether its a foul for a careless challenge or dangerous play.
Also someone mentioned overhead kicks but I think the laws actually addresses this and stipulates if you have no-one around you then this is not considered dangerous but other players are close by and can potentially challenge for the ball then it becomes dangerous play. Again if as part of the action you make contact with an opposition player then it ceases to be dangerous play and becomes a careless challenge and therefore a direct free kick
Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
Tarkowski only had eyes for the ball. Whilst it was high he didn’t know the other player was there. What’s he supposed to do. It didn’t look great but definitely no pen for me.

Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
Maybe he should have gone to head it then and clashed heads and probably had a fair worse ouctome then connecting with the boot.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 12:59 pmit makes no difference if Tarks is going for the ball, wins the ball and whether he knows the other player is there or not for whether its a foul for a careless challenge or dangerous play.
Or tried to header it or left it and let the newcastle player have a free attack at the ball.
It was instinctive, but also purely with eyes for the ball.
If thats a foul we may as well give up!
Luckily the referee saw sense. With that and the one on Ben Mee.
Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
Lmao hilarious viewing, it’s the same thing with Dermot Gallagher on Sky, he starts sweating buckets and melting into his seat when asked to explain his decision to back the referee.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 11:39 amCommentator says let's bring in Peter Walton and you know you are in for some nonsense. Can’t wait to hear what Dermot makes of it
Re: Penalty for dangerous play?
I saw a Sky Sports poll on this where 91% voted it should’ve been a penalty. I didn’t think it would be that clear, seemed a pretty close decision.
I’m a little biased though, my view has always been if the defender kicks the ball first then the contact on the man after is irrelevant. That doesn’t work anymore, Liam Cooper cleared the ball and got red carded the games gone completely, we have the worst crop of referees and spineless leaders.
