Pele
Movie on Netflix about peles career. Primarily for Brazil.
Great viewing well worth a watch. Definitely puts to bed any question of him being one of if not the greatest players of all time.
Shows how much pressure he had to put up with. On and off the field. From a very young age too. And the way he was kicked off the park too. Shows great humility.
Some great footage of some iconic goals.

Wouldn’t make the grade for us even when he was at his best even if he was picking up a lowly wage packet!

Board policy for any title with just a persons name should be to add (not dead) for this very reason!!!thelaughingclaret wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 3:14 amWas expecting this to be an RIP thread. Me thinks the OP did this on purpose. Git.

Saw him play live v Hungary at Goodison .The Hungarians kicked the crap out of him and effectively finished him in the World cup that year.Brazil weren't the same team without their best player
Re: Pele
Pele was interviewed from his Santos home on Italian TV last Sunday. What a humble man he is. He was more intent on mentioning the 5 headed goals his father had scored in one match (his father too was a footballer and played centre forward) than his exploits. He joked that when he and Maradona met they used to joke about vying for the Best Ever Footballer accolade. Pele told Maradona that he scored with his head, right foot and left foot but never with his hand!!!!
Pele said that his father had always taught him that we are all equal under God and he never let his fame go to his head. A real lesson in humility.
Another anecdote is that he was christened Edson after Thomas Edison because electricity had reached Santos in the year he was born. Pele said "now that is a name that should be famous - Thomas Edison - not Pele!"

Re: Pele
I remember my first visit to Brazil, nearly 30 years ago, as you drove away from the airport there was a 40 foot picture of Pele saying‘Welcome to Brazil’.

Re: Pele
Showed that. And then the Portugal game where they finished him off. The manager said that Brazil had more injuries in 8 days in that World Cup than the previous 8 years.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 4:54 amSaw him play live v Hungary at Goodison .The Hungarians kicked the crap out of him and effectively finished him in the World cup that year.Brazil weren't the same team without their best player
Amazing to see he actually retired from Brazil at 25 before coming back to play a huge part in 70. With several iconic moments in that World Cup.
Not too dissimilar to Ronaldo.
Amazing that he is still the only player to win three world cups and still Brazil’s top scorer. He might still keep that title for a while yet. It did look like neymar would take it. But maybe pele will keep that record. I sure hope so.

They asked him if he was the best player ever. He said no. Because to be so he would have to be better than every player in every position.

Re: Pele
You immediately suspect the worst but in all honesty a 5 second delay confirms it in the event, it’s no big issue for some people, in contrast I find it pleasant when you get the good news the person in the title is alive & kicking although in this sad case literally it’s not possible I believe his mobility is bad & needs a frame & wheelchair to get out & about.CharlieinNewMexico wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 3:39 amBoard policy for any title with just a persons name should be to add (not dead) for this very reason!!!

Re: Pele
Yes was sad to see he is in a chair and using a frame. He is starting to look older than 80. Although still seems compus mentus and has his humour and wit!

Re: Pele
Pele was the first player I can recall who was billed as the world's greatest player - had the privilege of seeing him live twice, once in a World Cup game at Goodison in 1966 and once in a friendly playing for Santos against Sheffield Wednesday in the early 70s. Such was the draw that the game at Hillsborough had to be played on a Wednesday afternoon because of power cuts. They thought that would dramatically cut the attendance but over 50,000 turned up.

Re: Pele
I must confess, knowing his health issues, I thought he'd passed away but I'm not sure placing 'Not Dead' is the best way to avoid any confusion.CharlieinNewMexico wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 3:39 amBoard policy for any title with just a persons name should be to add (not dead) for this very reason!!!

Re: Pele
It was the other two games really where he got the kickings - Portugal really sorted him out and ended his World Cup.Woodleyclaret wrote: ↑Tue Apr 13, 2021 4:54 amSaw him play live v Hungary at Goodison .The Hungarians kicked the crap out of him and effectively finished him in the World cup that year.Brazil weren't the same team without their best player
I watched the documentary last night - I never tire of watching Pele play.

Re: Pele
He was way ahead of his time and on a different level to the players around him - easily the best for me.
Re: Pele
Some of the old footage in the documentary was incredible. With really old games, footage of the technique, speed and aesthetic is far inferior to what we watch today, but Pele looked like he wouldn’t be out of place in today’s game, it stands out so much watching old footage, then watching old footage of him.
