Amazon Firestick

Post by ClaretDiver » Thu Apr 15, 2021 3:38 pm

Has anyone got experience of using a firestick with a mobile wifi hotspot? I am looking at options for my new campervan and see this as a viable option if it will work...am guessing if that would then an IPTV box would as well...any thoughts guys?

Should work fine but make sure you’re on a properly unlimited data usage!!

Watching IPTV will eat your data up very quickly.

We have an unlimited internet device for around 20 pound a month with three.

We use it for 5 or 6 phones and IPTV in the motorhome.

That sounds perfect for what we need...the internet usage was my main worry, I have an EE unlimited sim but it actually only 100GB. Is that truly unlimited data??

You can’t just access a campground / hotel / businesses free WiFi there?

I stick mine in my pocket and wherever I am traveling (hotel / Starbucks/ restaurant etc) plug into the laptop.

You can but free wifi isn't worth bothering with at most places. They like you to pay for their premium internet.

I’ve seen a few people mention that they hotspot it using the giffgaff pay as you go sims on unlimited deals.

Think it’s about £25 for a month with unlimited internet sim only. You could grab a sun for free and then just too up when needed.

It obviously would depend on the signal where you were and I don’t know how good live games would be but should work of for Netflix/movies etc.

Seems Smarty (3 network) have a truly unlimited plan for £20 a month, no contract....this could be the way to go with either a firestick or iptv....

Everything unlimited I’ve always come across as always been subject to a fair usage policy, I’ve heard of people suffering restricted service & getting throttled, you must be fair going hammer & tong to be close to exceeding some of data chunks some of the networks throw at you!

Couple of people have tried Smarty for this reason for use at their holiday homes, granted both homes are out in sticks but they said the reliability was similar to that of 2 empty tin cans and some string.

Cheers CotC....tbh, for the amount we will be watching it, I might get the 60GB plan from Sky (I get it half price) because the data rolls over for up to 3 years so if we go away for a weekend a month then 60GB should do us for what we will watch I guess....

It’s powered off 3 same as ID mobile, the reviews aren’t that bad on trustpilot, some criticise its upto the hilt on capacity but all of the 4 networks have various MVNO running off.

If you go away for a weekend and need more than 60gb of data you are doing the weekend wrong :D :D

Exactly lol!!! TBH, it's only really going to be watching the odd movie after diving if the weather is crap etc...so I think I am going to stick with this and get a firestick to hotspot to...

And also, if I want to watch the match on Sky then I can do that on my tablet and it won't use any data at all...whoop whoop!
