There has been a lot of background effort to get it going again - Agnelli. Perez and Laporta met in Barcelona last week, Perez and Laporta were adamant their clubs would not be part of the LaLiga/CVC deal (in part because it would end such Super League for 50 years) - Atletico Madrid did agree to it though somewhat strangely. What has been suggested in the last few weeks is that the stubborn 3 have been trying to get clubs with grand histories but not from the major leagues to be part of a Super League - the fear is still that the Premier League will be Super League by default hence that story in El Mundo yesterday which was rapidly denied.

This is significant in regards to a Super League reboot that has been discussed again in recent days - the 9 clubs that left Super League ahave now re-joined the European Clubs Association (remember all 12 resigned from the ECA when the Super League was announced) and had to make a legal commitment to do so - from the ECA

16.08.21
ECA EXECUTIVE BOARD ACCEPTS CLUBS’ REQUESTS TO RETAIN ECA MEMBERSHIP
Home News ECA Executive Board accepts Clubs’ requests to retain ECA membership, completing reintegration of the Clubs into European football

Following the receipt by ECA of specific requests asking the ECA Board to consider the withdrawal of their previous resignation requests of April 2021, the ECA Executive Board has agreed that the following clubs will retain their ECA ordinary membership for the current 2019-23 ECA membership cycle: AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, Club Atlético de Madrid, FC Internazionale Milano, Liverpool FC, Manchester City FC, Manchester United FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC (“Clubs”).

In its decision, and after an exhaustive process of re-engagement by the Clubs and re-assessment by ECA over recent months, the ECA Executive Board took into consideration the Clubs’ acknowledgement that the so-called European Super League project (“ESL Project”) was not in the interests of the wider football community and their publicly communicated decisions to abandon said ESL Project completely. The ECA Board also acknowledged the Clubs’ stated willingness to engage actively with ECA in its collective mission to develop European club football – in the open and transparent interests of all, not the few.

This decision of the ECA Board marks the end of a regrettable and turbulent episode for European football and aligns with ECA’s relentless focus to strengthen unity in European football. Through this period of unprecedented challenge, ECA has firmly established itself as the only organisation through which the leading clubs in Europe can promote and protect their interests in football, whilst also developing the competition landscape and reinforcing the centrality of clubs in the governance of European football.

ECA can now proceed with renewed unity and solidarity to continue the important work needed to stabilise and develop European club football – at a time when this is needed the most.

This has never really gone away and regular readers of the MMT will be aware of that

The coming weeks will see the ECJ's judgement on the case put by A22 (the people behind today's announcement), what has been evident since the adjudicators advisory in December is that A22/the rebel three have been trying to win the PR war because the advisory effectively killed their ambitions by suggesting that FIFA/UEFA and by extension the leagues could par any participants (players/clubs) from their own competitions, many leagues were already planning that and are just waiting for the judgement so rubber stamp it. Key to the Super League plans (as I have said all along) are that participants also retain membership of their respective domestic leagues. - This is about additional revenues and nothing else.

It is interesting to see that this is now a multidivisional proposal - Why?
- the potential weight of so many participants may mean that UEFA and the European Leagues relent on the threat of exclusion
- the big clubs, would be able to continue membership even with one or two bad seasons, as incomes (particularly match day ones) and probably some form of co-efficient payment (the people behind super-league invented that distortion at the ECA and forced it on UEFA) means revenues would not drop dramatically. Throw in the revenue based financial rules dressed up as sustainability and you have a self perpetuating virtuous circle for them.

The threat that really remains is FIFA's hunger for revenues - it looks at UEFA's income from club football and wants to essentially take it for itself - there have long been talks of a set of continental Super Leagues which would then feed into FIFA's bloated Club World Cup. FIFA's support for Super League could hinge on how many and which club's support the ideas put forward by A22. There have been known discussions on this and basic principal agreements between Gianni Infantino (FIFA) and Florentino Perez (Real Madrid/Super League) going back to 2019. FIFA and Infantino already have an African Super League ready to go (Infantino has absolute control over the African equivalent of UEFA, CAF)

As with almost everything these days there is so much else at play, geo -politics will come into play as well as geo-fandom while Anglo Saxon fanbases are virtually all in agreement in their opposition to this most others aren't particularly the further east and south you travel and that includes the overseas fans of English clubs.

The stage we are at in this moment is one of potential brinkmanship, A22 are trying to draw out support from other clubs, so far the control of the ECA is holding firm but it will be interesting to see what happens when the judgement is finally announced in Luxemburg

Just leave the game alone - adapt the current European competitions by all means but no need to add more on.

It's all about money and that is what leaves a sour taste in fans mouths. Clubs are spending more money and then complaining they can't make it work because of the short term failures to qualify for the competitions they rely on to help balance the books.

They don't care about the fans, they refuse to reduce their expenditure. All this suggestion will do is prolong the issue - how long will it be before this proposed competition isn't enough and they need another revenue generator?

If you haven't watched the documentary on Apple TV - it's worth a watch.

Things seem to have move on rather rapidly it seems - at least 11 clubs have agreed in principle to a European Super League according to reports

http://www.uptheclarets.com/messageboar ... start=6910

Arsenal
Chelsea
Manchester United
Liverpool
Tottenham

Barcelona
Real Madrid
Athletico Madrid

Juventus
AC Milan
Inter Milan

suggestions that Manchester City have now joined them
Very good news so let them get on with it. I hope it comes off and they are not allowed a team in the domestic leagues of their countries, because thats what they want.

you are not paying attention - it is designed to be played alongside the domestic leagues not instead of
Well then its up to the domestic leagues to stop them having a team in their leagues. Or redesignate their club names and do not allow players in the super leagues to play in the domestic leagues. There will likely be some financial shenanigans if this does come off.
