There are far worse legal issues with the banning of players from the world cup. They have contracts with their clubs and should not be personally penalised for a breach of contract by their employers.

However, there is nothing wrong with banning players from playing in competitions if it is a player that signs a new contract with, say, arsenal after a ban rule is brought in. That would have a nice knock-on effect if a lot of super league players won't sign new contracts and prefer to let them run down, then signing for a non super league club.

I predict a £5,000 fine for each club and a strongly worded letter from the league.

Will the last team to drop out be crowned as inaugural champions of the ESL?

As football fans, we should NEVER forgive these parasite clubs for wanting to do this. If we play these teams when supporters return next season, we should give the visiting club officials a really, really torrid time.

If I was in charge of Burnley Football Club, they wouldn't be stepping foot though our door. Disgraceful

Edit: I mean leading the negotiations. Sure the Glaziers will have been eager and fully complicit.

Must admit I am somewhat surprised by how spineless some of these boardrooms have been having made the commitment - I though they had a bit more about them

This vulnerability needs to be utilised by the 14 and UEFA

I also remain hugely disappointed ratified that stupid Champions League reform yesterday, they need to change that decision pronto

They were spineless doing what they’ve done behind backs. Real opportunity hopefully for the other Premier Leagues club to wrestle back some power.

To be fair to Tottenham, if they wait it out a few more hours they might finally get there hands on a trophy.

The tweet suggesting it was Boris getting involved does make sense, currently they control their own destiny and get gov money to support them. He could have seriously pulled the rug from under them.

I just pray that there are painful sanctions from the Premier League incoming.

It can never be forgotten what they tried to do, and they need a huge, painful example making of them. A European ban for next season for all 12 clubs is a start, do UEFA have the balls for it? A transfer embargo for 12 months perhaps also? I am unsure a fine would achieve anything such is the might of these clubs.

Well the clubs are skint so a fine just adds to the debt, not good.

Point deduction means they still have the chance to finish top 4 , just adds more of a challenge and they would think a lot harder before trying this again.

They generally have a good working relationship with their supporter groups and they were shocked at the reaction from those groups. It’s reported that Abramovich stepped in at that point.

Even before anything from Johnson yesterday there were suggestions that City & Chelsea had been somewhat reluctant so it was no surprise that they pulled out first.
