You may well roll your eyes but he’s not.

We get a point last week with Pope in the nets.

Hopefully he’s a late bloomer but I don’t think he’s good enough for first choice as things stand.

I hope I’m wrong but I agree. Doesn’t have enough presence and as above just doesn’t look like a footballer. I know you can’t judge someones ability on appearance. And I know I just have.

Believe it or not, he's our 2nd string 'keeper, and we now have had 3 England internationals in our squads over the last few seasons.
Go back to pre-Heaton and tell me BPF is not as good as any of our 1st choice 'keepers in the last 30 odd years.
We are spoiled these days for goalkeepers

I like the look of BPF, and Will Norris...

More importantly, the best goalkeeping coach in the PL thinks that they have something worth working on, and that’s got to be good enough hasn’t it?

Last 3. Check the post before yours.
Man City A 5
Newcastle H 2
Man U A 3
Totals 10

I also said he’d done OK and used the word ‘unfortunately’. He’s had to play some big games and is a young lad making his way. It’s in front of him that doesn’t look solid or threatening enough anymore. The goal keeping department is the least of our worries this Summer.

His distribution is certainly a lot better than Pope's and hes done very little wrong objectively speaking. You cant blame him for any of the goals conceded in the last two games and he made a great save from Gayle last week and a good one v one save today.
However I still cant help but feel we would have come away with points these last two games with Pope in. I think he saves both first goals in the last two weeks (when performing well,) , which were good finishes but purely I think his stature allows him to save both. Not that he was I'm great forn before getting injured, mind.

Agree with you on all points, apart from maybe saving the first today.

I have just watched the highlights back and had forgotten just how many times BPF saved us today. Billy is doing his work. An excellent understudy.

What BPF needs is a defence that protects him like Pope
Look at the facts . Man U the best team today , second in the league , Pope gets beat every time by those goals!
Newcastle , no chance with St Max mesmerising our defence , Tarks sliding on his arse for the winner , Mee hiding behind Tarks

I honestly can’t tell you if he is or isn’t. He’s only played three games for us.

He could be the next Heaton. He could be the next kiraly. He could be the next Luigi cenamo.

It’s rash of me to say he isn’t good enough. But it’s equally rash that people think he’s the new Heaton.

Perhaps. But you’ve taken the context out. Where I said myself not a way to judge someone.

But look at all of the other players on the pitch. He just doesn’t look like a premier league footballer.

Perhaps he needs the akinbiyi training reigime.

You want your keeper to be dominant. He just doesn’t appear to have that about him. Yet.

Joe Hart looked great for us too, still shipped goals for fun and couldn't buy a win. I think goalkeepers communicating is incredibly important, why were the team so slow to pushing out towards Greenwood for the 2nd goal? was the goalkeeper not screaming at the team to wake up? I don't know, BPF makes good saves, doesn't strike me as a future PL goalkeeper though.

Yes, maybe an overly harsh description of Mee in this instance and certainly does not reflect my opinion of him overall, which is very high.

The Newcastle player is very tricky and Mee was directly behind Tarkowski when the shot was hit and effectively out of the game. I think his positioning to stop shots is usually better than he showed here

"Doesn't look like a PL footballer", well neither did Neville Southall in his day, didn't do too badly, and Luke Shaw plays for Man Utd and England.

"Needs the Akinbiyi...whatever" well, our nutritionists/conditioning staff have been trying to get BPF to bulk out a bit through a personal diet plan, so you may be right there.

I know. I’ve alluded to it above. It’s a ridiculous thing to say someone can’t be good because they don’t look like a player. It’s just an observation that’s all.

Fwiw I just don’t have any where near the confidence I do when popes name isn’t on the sheet. And I didn’t even have those concerns when Hart was in goal.

I hope I’m wrong. But I’d put money on him not having a career with us as a regular premier league goalkeeper.

I think you've missed my point.
Put Kevin Long in for Tarks, or Jimmy Dunne for Ben Mee, whoever you like.
our stand-ins are not as good, obviously, so they make us nervous.
This, of course, particularly applies to defenders.

Understand. I thought you were implying the keeper was nervous because of a weaker side in front of him.

The main thing we have missed from Pope isn’t his general play. It’s his leadership and organisation.

I'd put it slightly differently.
SD has built a defensive system based on Mee, Tarkowski and Pope.
Leave any one of the three out and the system doesn't work anywhere near as well, evidenced by our defensive frailty with Joe Hart in goal or Kevin Long at CB.
Add to that we are playing further up the pitch these days and are not very good at defending a high line (too slow).
FWIW, I don't think NP has been as solid of late.

Not in anyway reason to judge him. But he doesn’t look like a professional premier league goalkeeper to me.

All the other players on the pitch on both sides look like physical, professional athletes.

Even McNeil looks older and more physical than him.

Reminds me a bit of ramsdale.

Did make a few good stops though.
I can't quite work out whether you think Pope and BPF are both a bit weedy for professional footballers, or whether you think Pope is a toned Schwarzenegger-like footballing hunk.

Which is the better way to judge a goalkeeper? To watch a Mr univers competition, or to watch a football match? They both look like keepers to me.

It’s not that ridiculous, there’s a lot to be said about the groundwork children have about their movement, balance, and flexibility. Some children just move better and develop those positive bio mechanical memories that they carry into adulthood.

Bounce is a great book to have a read of.

He’s a good competent keeper, he just doesn’t make the miraculous saves that Pope does.

Unfortunately we need to have a miracle worker between the posts

Utter crap.

He had no chance today with Mee and Tarkowski in front of him they were dreadful, they gave him zero protection.

I honestly don't think the score line would have been any different if Pope had have been playing, bar the 4th which he should have done better with.

I think he has something for sure. Good with his feet. Needs game time to learn, I’d say.
I thought he did his learning on the training ground and then applied it in games. Doesn't look up to it for me but in his defence I wonder how many football matches he has taken part in this season. Can't be many at all and that is never going to help.

When did we sign him? Was it 2019?
It must be hard to not play much football for 18 months or so and then to be called upon. I think he needs a loan in the championship with a team that would play him every week. That of course leaves a hole as our back up but I think he needs to play to develop and really see if he can make it.

Very Joe Hart esc, I may have called this bang on

He’s essentially Joe Hart but gets less abuse from our fans because he hasn’t won multiple Premier League titles, played over 70 times for England and isn’t Tom Heaton.

He can’t seem to make a save from outside the box, very slow feet or something. I thought he should’ve been across for today’s first goal, I think it’s a save Pope makes look comfortable.
