Steve Bull
Saw that he was in the crowd (stadium) yesterday. What a finisher he was. Always seemed to score against us. proper centre forward

Re: Steve Bull
Terrific player. Not old enough to remember him in his prime but remember him bagging the winner against us in 94-95 at Turf Moor. The only goal of the game.
Re: Steve Bull
Scored on his England debut versus Scotland when he was technically still a division 3 player. They'd got promoted that year to division 2.
He was a monster of a striker. Didn't he go to Italia 90 as part of the World Cup squad?
Not bad for a lad who was playing in the Sherpa Van Final two years earlier.

Beast of a player back in the day. Literally unplayable for most lower division defences when he was in his prime.

Re: Steve Bull
In 1986, Bull was sold to local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers for 65k and went on to score over 250 goals for Wolves. What is it with the Baggies. I'm sure they released or sold Woody as well for something or nothing. Big Big mistakes for them

We should be able to forgive Bull because he made a habit out of scoring against everyone.pushpinpussy wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 4:39 pmSaw that he was in the crowd (stadium) yesterday. What a finisher he was. Always seemed to score against us. proper centre forward
The ones that stick in the throat are the lower league donkey boys who seemed to reserve their goals for us.

Re: Steve Bull
He was a heck of a player in his day, similar to Vardy in the way both worked their way up from the non-league to the highest level.
I seem to remember him forming a lethal partnership with Andy Mutch.

Re: Steve Bull
Incredible striker in those divisions, fully deserved his England call up too. Scored a good goal at Hampden for England, think that got him on the plane to Italia 90?
There was a good bit on Sky a couple of years ago about Wolves going to Newcastle at Xmas and he scored a hat-trick. Proper local legend, probably wouldn't happen today, he'd be off to sit on a 'Big 6' bench for 5 years instead.

He was indeed in the England squad at Italia 90.
I think he might even have got on for a few minutes in the group stages.

The Tipton Terror was a class striker I saw him many times and was at that Sherpa Van final which had over 80,000 fans on.

Surprisingly perhaps, England only took three strikers to Italia '90, they were Gary Lineker, Peter Beardsley... and Steve Bull!

Re: Steve Bull
He actually played a lot more than you thought Rowls.
Came on for Lineker in the 83rd minute of the Ireland game, replaced Waddle in the 58th minute against Holland, and he actually started the Egypt encounter before Peter Beardsley replaced him after 84 minutes.
In the round of 16 he was a 74th minute sub for John Barnes, and that was his last meaningful involvement in the tournament, as he remained on the bench for the Cameroon, West Germany and Italy games.

Re: Steve Bull
I remember him scoring at Hampden after controlling the ball off his back whilst turning then hitting it first time. He was such an instinctive player with the ball anywhere near the goal.
Waddle had opened the scoring with a terrific header in the first half.

Re: Steve Bull
Mutch-Bull partnership caused carnage. They were unstoppable as a partnership.
Don't think Bull scored against us at Wembley but t'other one did

Re: Steve Bull
No Bull had a quiet game at Wembley, but unfortunately for us Wolves still had too much quality on the day even without their main man bagging.
I seem to recall a peach of a free kick from Robbie Dennison that ultimately settled the tie, after Mutch scored early on.

I recall the free kick all to well. Was gutted. Also recall Mutch's goal. I thought we gave a good account of ourselves overall though. I dreaded the final score when Mutch had scored as I thought Bull was bound to score but we actually gave them a game. As I recall, Comstive came mighty close with a header just over.tiger76 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 5:49 pmNo Bull had a quiet game at Wembley, but unfortunately for us Wolves still had too much quality on the day even without their main man bagging.

Great day out that, given the dark times we'd been enduring.
Two great old clubs, packing out Wembley.
Seem to recall it was a bigger gate than the England game around that time.

Thought Tony Morley turned out for us in that game as well. Could be mistaken.

Yes, think your right, Skippy played a half for each.
Think Morley did turn out for us too, though my memories a bit hazy. We'd all had a few early beers.

Re: Steve Bull
Like bloody Garner, but forWolves. His love of the club meant most of his prime was slogging away with us in the lower leagues. He went through the Divisions without missing a beat, and always scored against us at a time a rivalry like we used to have in the 1950’s was developing, but in the lower leagues obviously. Him and Mutch...put us to the sword a time or two, great partnership.

Re: Steve Bull
Don’t remember that. must have been late in his career, we couldn’t of bid £100k for most of that period. He loved to hate us, like I said a bit like Simon Garner when it comes to Burnley... it was a tough time for a Burnley fan to have a soft spot for Wolves.. they started to turn it around about a season before we did and we were playing catch up with them back up the leagues for a few years on the spin.

I think Tony Morley arrived after the play off as you say. I know I was thrilled to bits when he came back, I’d been too young to see him first time, but loved him playing with Withe, Shaw, Cowens et al for That Villa team that won the European Cup... our own Barry Spink stood in for Rimmer in goal if I remember rightly too.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Apr 26, 2021 8:40 pmNot sure on that but he played for us in the fourth division in the following season

They beat us 5-2 or 5-1 at the Turf they could have had 12 they missed so many chances.
The only time I’ve been at a game where I was literally frightened of how many the other team would score.
