Great memories from that day and that magical season.

Many thanks for compiling this series, I hope it gave you as much pleasure as it has done to many readers.

I honestly always believe that wasn't the case until probably the closing stages of the game when realisation hit the players. We were head and shoulders better than them though although I have to admit I wasn't 100% sober during the game.

You'd be disappointed if you went to a game like that and came away sober

Just a couple more articles to go - the testimonials and celebrations which will feature a photograph of some long (or longer than now) haired louts.

I have to admit, I love reliving this particular season. I did want to keep it going next season but I've only material for the opening few matches and I'm not sure I'll get back to the library in time. If not, I'll do what I'd always planned and cover the following seasons on the 50th anniversary.

A magical season with a magical last day.

I was absolutely wasted when I got home - now I hardly touch a drop, last alcohol was at Newcastle in Feb last year.

I was back home from uni for the weekend, and I went on the bus that Ribble used to run from Lytham to all Preston home games. So, no pub crawl for me before this match.

The bus back to Lytham after the game hadn't gone very far when a brick flew through the window. I do hope no-one who posts on here was responsible!

According to a Preston forum the attendance was 21,550, which would make more sense if there were 15,000 or more from Burnley, as CT estimated.

It's a shame there's no footage of the game because Waldron's goal was possibly the best of the season. I've just watched this video of Dobbo talking about the game along with some old cine footage.

My journey as a supporter didn't start until 1975 so this is before my time, but for those old enough, which did you enjoy more 72/73 or 15/16?

The best season, and best football from any Burnley team I've ever seen. I feel sorry for any young Clarets who failed to witness it. They probably think we exaggerate it, but no one there can deny we were awesome.

We were at the back of the stand which was made up of wood with cracks between the steps you could look through. The stand was bouncing, and I was just waiting for those girders to go.
A great day, and fantastic memory.

For me Martin, 1972/73 was the first time I'd seen us win anything having started in the 1960/61 season so will always be special. But to go into a season and lose only four games is incredible. I never thought I'd see anything like that again and then Dyche, in effect, did it twice. Don't ask me to choose between them because they were all special on their own ways. What I do know is there were some bloody players in those three promotions.

No way did PNE have 6,000 fans there. 4,000 top wack. My favourite away game ever.

We wanted us to win the game. No doubt about that. I didn't( and still don't) care about Preston and their league position but the point we got was enough to cap a wonderful season. Every time I see that iconic photo of Dobbo leading the team out I know I am somewhere on it, just to the right of the tunnel and the memories of that season come flooding back. Pitch narrowed, a surprise goal from them and a Waldo screamer. You've mentioned it all,CT.
Just like to also say a big thankyou for these regular articles which have helped keep me sane over the last few months. Still looking forward to the last two. Would that fixture have heard the first rendition of 'No,nay never?

I went over with a group of about 20 mates, arriving about 11 o'clock in Preston. After the game we had a few pints in Padiham followed by a trip round Burnley center ending up in the Circulation Club, which was full to the gunnels with celebrating Burnley fans. What a day out, one I will never forget.

It's no exaggeration.
Our football through that period was often expansive and outstanding.
I said it in the late 70s and quite a few times since, we were only maybe a couple of players or so short of a 1st Division title, as we went on to prove the season after.
But sadly, we all know what happened.

Thanks for the article and picture of the programme Tony. It prompted some great memories! A fantastic day and certainly felt like a home game with the atmosphere and number of Burnley fans in attendance. Went on the pitch at the end as I think everyone did, and took home a piece of the pitch as a souvenir (Sorry PNE I will eventually get round to paying you for it!) and kept it for quite a while until the grass grew no more and I was left with a pot of dusty Deepdale soil. Happy days, great memories and what a line up!

Thanks for the article Tony, great memories indeed. Even that it’s 48 years ago it seems like yesterday, I remember going on the pitch at the end to celebrate, really happy times.
We ( me and 2 mates) decided to walk in the direction of Skipton after the game, the plan being that we would catch a bus just a bit further down the road, no bus came and we ended up walking all the way past the aircraft factory at Samlesbury! Shortly after that an old couple stopped and gave us a lift back home, god knows what time it was when we got back! Happy Happy Days.

Tony Livesey said on the piece at half time on Sunday he wouldn't swop 30 consecutive years in the champions league for our history and reading this article as one of our highs and we all know the lows it really does make the well earned good times even sweeter.

A wonderful day to complete a fantastic season. I went to my uncle’s funeral at 0900 then on a coach at 1000 in a pub at 1100. We had seats in the Pavilion Stand, front row towards the Town End with a big banner draped over the front. It was a great view of the proceedings but too accessible for the missiles from the natives. Made it into the Directors Box with the players after the match. Picked up the coach which by then had a smashed window but we still went to Blackpool Central Pier Dixieland Bar. Coach was repaired whilst we celebrated. Frequent stops on the way home to empty clogs.

Again only a few things i can recall , now remember the goal from the away end and you could see it arrow into the top corner , also near the end all the champagne corks hitting off the roof and then the drive home where it was just a line of Clarets heading towards Burnley all the horns going off .

Boy 48 years ago .

If I recall correctly it wasn’t all ticket for such a big game for both sides. Very few were in those days. I stood on the kop end, if that’s what you called it. Can still see Waldos thunderbolt going in and remember what I wore. Prince of Wales check trousers, brogues a blue shirt and denim jacket. With a silk BFC scarf tied round my wrist. What a dickhead I must have looked 😁.
Went on a coach from Keighley, but don’t remember the evening 😩😉

Silk scarves were very handy for hastily stuffing into one's denim jacket when the opposition loomed into view
in pubs and the like, being very thin. :P

Great day and a fabulous goal from CW.

What a fantastic day. Can’t believe it’s 48 years.

Spent before the game in the Deepdale hotel that was overflowing with Burnley fans. I came out overflowing with ale!

Always remember being on the pitch after the final whistle. Brilliant day and brilliant season. Thanks for the reports.

These articles have been a great trawl down memory lane for me CT. Loved that season. For the Deepdale game my dad had got hold of a couple of comps from I believe a mate on Preston police, and we were sat on the row directly in front of the press box. I kept turning round to see what was going on with the reporters - I think one of the reasons that first sparked my interest in working in newspapers. The season also included one of my favourite Burnley wins, the feistly 2-1 victory at Bloomfield Road on Boxing Day. I also remember the season for seeing numerous games either with my right arm in a big cast after breaking it, or my right shoulder strapped up after also breaking it in a football training session later the same day I had the cast taken off my arm. The promotion also helped me get over my own personal football misery - got selected to represent Blackpool Schoolboys alongside George Berry (Wolves and Wales) and the late Mick Robinson (Liverpool and Ireland) but only got one game in before those two arm injuries meant I missed the entire Regional Schools competition.

Regrettably I could not attend that game but I was there for when they clinched promotion. It is disappointing there is no footage of the game but what was the crowd reaction like when Waldron hit that goal?

Deepdale '88 was an incredible atmosphere and a real staging point on our way back from the horrors of the previous few years.

An unforgettable night, better than the Wembley final, for me, irrespective of the result.

He died in 2010. February, I think. How are you? Ever get to Skipton?
I’m absolutely fine thx, don’t get down much now, lost my mum and dad a few years back, my eldest now lives in Bradley, so yes get down to see her and the grandkids also a sneaky trip to the Turf (when we are allowed).
Hope all is well with you Nick, cheers Steve.

Two very special, but very different, Deepdale games, and I totally agree that the Sherpa Van night there was better than the final.

How the PNE wooden terracing didn't collapse is still a mystery (and a relief) to me.
When Ashley Hoskin slapped the winner in, everyone went berserk.
I was hoarse for days. :)
