Re: ARTICLE: John Angus enjoys a special night
Great night, great memories, with Mc scoring a penalty being mine. I think the night before QPR played their last game of the season at FA Cup finalists', Sunderland. Think it was a 3-0 win for Rangers as Sunderland's thoughts were well and truly on the following Saturday's visit to Wembley. Again, thanks for the reports from a fantastic season.

A great night all round.
Was so close to seeing a team with Newton at left back and Angus at right back, the best full backs I have seen at Burnley, but was unfortunately never to be.

For years I said that the two best right backs I saw at Burnley were John Angus and Keith Newton and the two best left backs were Alex Elder and Keith Newton. Keith himself considered himself better on the right but he looked a bloody good left back to me as well, absolute class.Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Sat May 01, 2021 5:05 pmA great night all round.

The more recent years have brought challengers, and a more modern type of full back. Angus, for instance, would get a nose bleed if he went over the half way line. In the last decade we've had Kieran Trippier on the right and both Stephen Ward and Charlie Taylor on the left.

Can't argue with that Tony, except about John Angus going over the halfway line.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 01, 2021 5:11 pmFor years I said that the two best right backs I saw at Burnley were John Angus and Keith Newton and the two best left backs were Alex Elder and Keith Newton. I remember one of Martin Dobson's early games and he was getting a rough time from Terry Paine of Southampton. John decided that he would remind Terry that there were one or two more senior players on the pitch. He made his way forward and across the field and almost put Terry over the wall with a sturdy challenge and he didn't give Dobbo any further problems in the game.
John says that he was quite good friends with Terry!

Not that I realised it at the time, but also my only time I saw Jimmy Mac kick a ball.
For this 11 year old claret, the evening marked my first excursion onto the Longside.

My ex father in law often told a tale that Willie Irvine, at the time playing for Halifax, requested permission to play in this game. It was refused. Willie walked out of Halifax and played anyway. Hoping this really happened.

The main thing I remember about this night was the Longside roaring THOMAS THOMAS RUNNER-UP!

A "Special 28-page Promotion Souvenir" is advertised on the back of the match programme. Anyone lucky enough to still have a copy?

The great Tom Finney in claret and blue on the picture above with Mc, Pilky and Leighton James close by. Just a wonderful night.

Tom Finney as a claret! Imagine him and Jimmy Mac in the same team.
John Angus was one of my favourite players. Probably the best full back I've seen playing for Burnley. Certainly deserved to play for England regularly.
