A couple of things.....90 mins is click bait, no quotes not even "sources" mentioned. However West Ham do have a habit of getting involved in anyone we are involved in of any quality.

I do wonder at times like this whether we'd be better off using our current status to buy players who are mid to top end champ standard who we can actually attract and are a decent age . At least then we'd be well placed when the inevitable comes and wages would be less.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Mon Aug 23, 2021 9:23 pmIf this is the case then maybe we should all come to accept that this is exactly where we are.
Can we attract Champs League standard players? Can we afford them?
If we can't get better than we already have we just go with our squad and hope there are 3 teams worse than we are.

Even with Leicester winning the league our 7th place and thus European football must go down as one of the great achievements in modern football.

We did with Chris Wood. But then that's now gone out of reach with the best strikers in the Championship commanding fees of £25-30 millionStevie Morgan wrote: ↑Mon Aug 23, 2021 9:41 pmI do wonder at times like this whether we'd be better off using our current status to buy players who are mid to top end champ standard who we can actually attract and are a decent age . Well! if we can't afford the likes or Cornet, then fine I can accept that, however maybe we should be concentrating on players who we can afford in that case, we're only 2 games in, and already our threadbare squad is struggling to cope, so if we're going to go with what we have we're playing a dangerous game of russian roulette regarding our hard-earned PL status.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Mon Aug 23, 2021 9:23 pmIf this is the case then maybe we should all come to accept that this is exactly where we are.

Demarai Gray has already merited a mention on this thread, as have Ryan Christie & Jed Walalce, any of those 3 would surely improve us, and should be within our budget if we've seemingly bid £15m for Cornet, and wages shouldn't be a problem with the latter 2 anyway.

I get that. Maybe set our sights even lower. Our point of difference is our style of play and team ethic etc anyway.

Well we need to buy from somewhere that's for certain. And that's how we operated for a few seasons, nabbing the top Championship talent in the likes of Brady, Hendrick, Taylor & Wood, and I'm sure there's others I've omitted, but even that market has now gone bananas, and well we could no doubt easily afford the wages, it's the initial transfer outlay that might be an issue for us, although if we've got £15m to burn on Cornet, you'd hope we could pick up a few bargains from the Champ, especially with players who are out of contract in a year.

That wouldn’t be a bad idea actually, effectively accepting relegation as a trade off to more stability in the championship & financially well positioned to push for promotion with less worry, even failure to hit objectives you aren’t lumbered with high earners & life would be stress free, you seem to lose sight of what’s really important because staying is up is the be all & end all to everything to some people.Stevie Morgan wrote: ↑Mon Aug 23, 2021 9:41 pmI do wonder at times like this whether we'd be better off using our current status to buy players who are mid to top end champ standard who we can actually attract and are a decent age . I miss the days we had Frank McParland at the club. The evening we got a sniff we might be interested in a bid for Andre Grey, and the very next morning he was signed.
This ******* around with 1 million here and there and slightly increasing terms will always mean we miss out on any quality players. The story of the last 3 years.

The club wouldn’t want someone who doesn’t want to be here. We have heard today that sources close to the player (ie the agent) said he has always dreamed of playing in the premier league...
Yes he may prefer elsewhere, but if we offer him good money and premier league challenge then it’s premature to say “he doesn’t want to be here” given what we have heard.

Maybe but that was based of a dodgy Twitter source. At the end of the day - we know next to nothing...
If he signs - I’ll be happy because he’s a good player and he simply wouldn’t join us at all if really he didn’t want to. I don’t care if he preferred somewhere else - I would prefer somewhere else if I weren’t a Burnley fan.
I actually think he’d probably end up liking it here as he can live in a typical footballer type area reasonably close, and will be adored by the fans if he does anything remotely good!!! Look how defour ended up loving his time here.

It seems we have a chance with Cornet…that said we seem to have moved from targeting players from clubs who don’t want to sell (eg. Dorans, Dawson, Lansbury, Bryson, Hughes, Worrall etc) to targeting players that don’t want to come to Burnley (Cornet, Young, Albrighton, Lookman).
In both scenarios it comes down to paying over and above what we feel to be fair…unfortunately for us, most other clubs will pay more.
It shows how tough it is for Burnley, but we either pay up or go down…I’ve always advocated our financial prudence under Garlick (until last summer) but it’s now or never. It’s been proven that we can’t operate profitably in the championship for any length of time (without parachute payments). With our new debt obligations, a manager that has 9 months left on his contract and new owners that we know nothing about…I’m worried.
As my username suggests, I’ve seen worse, I’ll still renew my ST regardless but it’s such a shame to see us squander our position as an established PL team that we probably won’t regain.
I really hope we get some players in that will give us a chance to stay up and enjoy the good times. Come on Burnley. UTC

Really don’t think you need worry. There is no panic within the club, everything seems to be going on quietly behind the scenes… none of the links suggest a Burnley source. I fully believe there is no issue between SD and the board either over the contract or signings. The rustle in the bushes tells us Burnley are actively seeking to strengthen, which is really all they can be asked to do.OrientMascot wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 12:51 amIt seems we have a chance with Cornet…that said we seem to have moved from targeting players from clubs who don’t want to sell (eg. At the end of the day, if little else there is enough know-how in the club already to make us not worth talking about. Give it a few more bad results and Alan Shearer will have to once again have to appease nervous Burnley fans, but no one seriously outside of Burnley fans, who know football expect us to be in any serious trouble again this season… even before any more signings.

Some stunning logic in here. To improve on what we have means we will have to sign some players for whom a move to Burnley may not necessarily be a step up, or even sideways. How do we do that? Money, for a start. Wistful tales of the long side and Jimmy Mac probably won’t cut it. Yet some on here would tell those players to do one at the slightest sign of them mulling over their career move.
