I welcome any signing and if this Cornet is as good as the noise around him, then that is good.
Few of points from me
1 what is the evidence that he is any good?
2 if good why aren't others in for him?
3 surely Dwight will be going if we do get Cornet, why 2 left wingers.... yes I know he plays elsewhere but is predominantly left, as I see it.

For me it is similar to when Lingard was available. This is a champions league level player that is fortunately available. I believe there are other clubs after him like Hertha Berlin.Awayfromburnley wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 7:53 amI welcome any signing and if this Cornet is as good as the noise around him, then that is good.

I could be wrong but I have a feeling Dwight will move central allowing him dictate play (similar to Defour) with cornet and Gudmundsson wide
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
1. He’s played over 200 games for one of France’s best domestic teams, scoring 40 goals and assisting 25. He has also been playing Champions League football including helping Lyon get to the semi finals recently. Our scouts have clearly been watching him and identified him as someone worth breaking our transfer record for. Though, as Dyche would say, all of the above guarantees nothing.Awayfromburnley wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 7:53 amI welcome any signing and if this Cornet is as good as the noise around him, then that is good.

2. It’s rumoured there has been other interest in him.
3. He played most of his time for Lyon on the right hand side (this has been highlighted maybe 100 times on this thread alone).

2. De Bild says he regularly had bids in for him from Bundesliga clubs over the past few seasons. He's turned them all down. He's been playing as a wing back so maybe clubs aren't seeing the best of him. Leeds were reportedly in for him earlier in the year.
3. Technically we'd have three left wingers. JBG is also predominantly left footed but plays mostly on the right. Dyche likes inverted wingers. There's no evidence to suggest we will sell McNeil when we need at least two wingers for each side. As mentioned above, it also gives us flexibility to play McNeil or indeed Cornet in a floating role

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I don't get it. Why do people still assume because he's left footed that he's a left winger?
We already have a left footed right winger in Gudmundsson. They are called inverted wingers. It's not a new concept. Wingers also swap sides, with no one position being singular, especially in attack.
This has been going on for years now. It's very rare a wide player can't play both sides.

John Haworth played Eddie Mosscrop and Billy Nesbitt on the wings and regularly swapped them over.

Best case scenario here is that we have identified him as being severely undervalued due to him playing out of position for the last year.

My issue with the inverted winger is the inability to whip in a cross first time, the kind of cross that catches out the defender and gives a striker an extra split second.
What you get instead is check, turn, switch foot, cross, defender heads out.

Signing Amad Diallo on loan would help Cornet settle, both being Ivorian

Completely agree with this. I find that so frustrating. Hardly any wonder we’re always offside when we never get any early balls in to the box.dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 8:37 amMy issue with the inverted winger is the inability to whip in a cross first time, the kind of cross that catches out the defender and gives a striker an extra split second.

FotMob has his “preferred foot” as right and from his highlights he appears to be able to use his right just as well as his left

I think it depends how predictable the play is. If you're sometimes crossing, sometimes cutting in to make a pass or shot or creating space for the full back to run into it can work very well.dougcollins wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 8:37 amMy issue with the inverted winger is the inability to whip in a cross first time, the kind of cross that catches out the defender and gives a striker an extra split second.

If however it's entirely one dimensional and you're cutting in to cross every time it's too predicable. In a way an in-swinger can be harder to defend but as with everything if you try the same thing over and over it does become easier to defend.
If we sign Cornet I can tell you now he's the kind of player who will run inside and shoot. He has pace and a shot on him. He won't be one dimensional like Gudmundsson sometimes is and he will also be able to play on the other side if needed too.
Oh and it's no coincidence we're in for him given his work rate is top notch. You need that in our team in defence.
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I am not sure why some people seem to act like inverted wingers are a new thing and out of the ordinary!
They have been a thing for a long while, with many other managers in the Premier League preferring that option including Jose Mourinho, who has won more than most... Even Pep Guardiola regularly opts for inverted wingers... Inverted wingers are slowly becoming the norm in modern football, if not dominating over more traditional orthodox wingers.
Inverted wingers work better with an attacking full-back, creating unbalance in the opposition defence. It works... That's why there has been a tactical shift from managers to use them more over the last decade.

Just made the mistake of clicking on a Burnley Express headline that said “Burnley deal on verge of completion” and the article is all about Dwight McNeil, nothing else.
Nothing but clickbait that rag now. it has gone so downhill over the years. Feel so sorry for the reporters who work for it.

We might get a few more if we sign this lad, he sounds like someone who's direct and will try and take defenders on, and when you do that you've always got a chance of them mistiming tackles.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Just a couple of points about inverted wingers.
1. It's not always about the cross. Cutting in on your preferred foot opens up several attacking options, e.g. through ball, one-two etc. It also causes the opposition defence to move out of position. It tests how organised they are.
2. It creates space for the overlapping fullback. The defending full back now cannot track the winger inside. It could open space for him.
I think it's not just about how a cross is made.

For all those great points, and although it’s much less a part of the modern game, there’s nothing better than a winger taking on and beating the opposition to whip a cross in from the line. For me, it’s sadly lacking in the modern game.

I remember that there was a study several years back which looked at crosses and decided that the traditional type of cross resulted in few goals. But I agree, a winger beating his man on the outside and getting a cross in is a great sight and McNeil is very good at this.DCWat wrote: ↑Fri Aug 27, 2021 12:15 pmYou’re right with what you’re saying.
