Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Well, when Alan Pace arrived and spoke about building the club up, I admit I assumed he was more focused on bringing in external revenue from streams perhaps not previously capitalised by the previous regime. In fact I posted a few times on here championing that.
To see our club being far more aggressive and active in the transfer market, regardless of the possible Barkley arrival, nobody can claim that he hasn’t put his money where his mouth is. He has certainly restored my faith that we once more have someone at the helm with the same passion and drive as Barry Kilby. And that is not a dig at the previous chair.
So much to be positive about. Brilliant.

He was excellent for Villa and then got injured, part of the reason they faded and fell down the table.SkiptonClaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 4:21 pmWord of caution on Barkley. The cognescenti on here were creaming themselves as I recall over the signing of Drinkwater, no dissenting voices were even remotely tolerated. Does this one have a little echo of the Drinkwater deal ? Certainly feels like a player who's career as, at best, stalled somewhat ? Not sure he pulled up any trees at Villa.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I think the Villa/Chelsea/England links also make it easy to compare Drinkwater and Barkley
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
At least when Barkley played for Villa last season he looked like a footballer, when drinkwater played for us, he looked like he’d never seen a football in his life!
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Only place I could realistically see Barkley playing would be just behind Wood in a 4-5-1?
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
I'd be interested to know if this was one of CT's articles? If discussions have been happening for a few days it's unlikely we'd be wasting our time with it now if we didn't think we could pull it off.

I think Barkley could be risky as he dosen't strike me as a grafter like Barton, if he gets that sorted could be very good though

I'm friends with a couple of Villa fans. They say he started off really well for them but was then out for ages with an innocuous injury. After that he wasn't interested.
Seems like he has a few motivational issues. On the other hand though if he had been firing on all cylinders at Villa then he'd be out of our reach

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
its relying on Chelsea letting him go, with them paying 75% of his wages
You never know, but I'd say this is probably going to be a struggle
Nothing credible to suggest that wage deferral has been accepted

Not to sure on Barkley who appears to be lazy and lack the charecter to fit into our set up, on the other hand if Dyche can get a tune out of him and get him intetested he could be a fabulous signing
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Of all the 'number 10s' mentioned above. Barkley was and is the stand out player for our system imo. He may not have the flair, pace and technical skills of some of the others but he is robust, strong, has an ability to pick a pass and something we have been crying out for, apart from that bit of something different in midfield. Put his foot on the ball, slow the game down if needed and give a bit of composure.
I think he's a player who likes to be loved and needs an arm around him on occasion but can see Clarets fans loving him and who better at man management than Dyche.
As above. He'd fit nicely into a 4-4-1-1.

If we can get the Barkley who played behind Lukaku I'd take it.

The massive plus for us regarding Barkley is that he'll want to try and push to get back into England reckoning for next winters world cup.
It would be a real coup for all concerned imo

Barton was a different sort of character question. There has never been any doubt that once Barton is on a football field, he will bust every gut he has got to win. His problems were off the field.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Barkley is another 5 levels above Barton with far less problems.
The problem might come if it's Pace signing these players and not Dyche.
He might be reluctant to play them like the other Garlick signings.
Hopefully it all clicks into place and we we will have the best team of my lifetime supporting us.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
People mention Drinkwater but to be fair, he came here needing game time and wasn't given a sniff. I still think if Drinkwater was given a solid 10+ game run he'd have been good for us.

Surely any reduction in wages is a plus for Chelsea.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 4:30 pmits relying on Chelsea letting him go, with them paying 75% of his wages

What's the benefit of them keeping him as it's obvious he's never going to play for them again?

Do we only have one spot left in the squad for this season? Have it at 24 atm over 21 as far as I can see.

Barkley would be an incredible signing if Dyche can get him motivated. Once of the most talented English midfielders when he broke through who on his day has absolutely everything in his locker, but has struggled for consistency since leaving Everton.

AMN has been quoted multiple times that he wants to play right back as that's how he got his England call up.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
AMN defo not coming
Its whether or not we can get Barkley over the line, which as they have no use for him, might be possible
But does he want to come?
That might be the issue

Yeah, seen that we paid 50k of his 110k wages when he was here
Thats not 25% though
Guess it depends on how far we are willing to go
Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Drinkwater never even looked like a professional footballer when he joined us. It became apparent fairly early on that he was finished at an sort of elite level and he was absolutely comical for Aston Villa.
Barkley is miles better.

Re: Summer 2021 Transfer Window Rumours - Links - Discussion
Perhaps he would have been, but he hardly helped his cause with a lackadaisical attitude, plus the nightclub incident didn't improve his reputation.
Vast difference between him and Barkley however, RB has been playing fairly regularly for Villa in recent months, and although his form dipped in the latter half of the season he showed plenty in his first few months there to suggest he'd improve our starting XI, and he'll certainly add a goal threat from midfield, which we've been sadly lacking in the last couple of seasons.
Also Ross Barkley is still hungry to prove himself, not least to a certain Gareth Southgate, and as pointed out he's still only 27, so if he wants to play regular PL footy TM could well be the right move for him at this time.

The most advantageous point being for us is that nobody else at this stage seem interested in him, unusually no other competition is in for him not apparent anyhow, everybody else have pretty much wrapped up things already apart from bits & bobs getting concluded.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 4:55 pmYeah, seen that we paid 50k of his 110k wages when he was here

I don't disagree with anything you said, Drinkwater definitely didn't help himself and Barkley is completely different and overall a far better fit. I'd be amazed with Barkley, he'd be brilliant behind Wood imo.tiger76 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 4:56 pmPerhaps he would have been, but he hardly helped his cause with a lackadaisical attitude, plus the nightclub incident didn't improve his reputation.
