Re: Pet Shop Boys
Hmm, I see nothing to compare them with Depeche Mode if I'm honest apart from the use of synths. They've always struck me as quite cheesy and have more in common with The Human League for me.
Mode have always been quite sleazy and dark lyrically. That said, since Alan Wilder left they have lost their 'edge'.

Re: Pet Shop Boys
Don't compare them to Depeche Mode - both brilliant but in different ways. PSB cheesy? Probably. Cheesy and camp.Zom Zom wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 10:05 pmHmm, I see nothing to compare them with Depeche Mode if I'm honest apart from the use of synths. Seen both PSB & DM live more than once. Totally different but both, in my view, brilliant.

Don’t even go there with Erasure (a new thread would be required). They’re my all-time favourite group. I’ve even sung ‘A Little Respect’ at a good friend’s wedding.

Re: Pet Shop Boys
Not seen PSB live, but seen Mode a couple of times. I'm not saying they're not a good act, they are, I have a number of their earlier albums, and they are spun now and again, especially Introspective and Disco. The same for Erasure, I have Wild! and The Innocents, but I found their earlier material a bit 'twee' for my liking, bar the odd single.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri May 28, 2021 10:08 pmDon't compare them to Depeche Mode - both brilliant but in different ways. There's nothing wrong with being a bit 'cheesy', I absolutely love early Human League pre-Dare!, and they had more cheese than the deli counter at Morrisons.
Re: Pet Shop Boys
New Order always number one for me in that genre. But the Pet Shop Boys really don't get the credit they deserve as songwriters. Very clever.
