England v Austria

Post by tiger76 » Wed Jun 02, 2021 7:00 pm

Tripps starts as does Lingard, and I'm surprised he's risking Kane in this game TBH.

England XI: Pickford, Alexander-Arnold, Trippier, Rice, Mings, Coady, Saka, Bellingham, Kane, Grealish, Lingard.

Subs: Calvert-Lewin, Johnstone, Godfrey, Phillips, White, Watkins, Ward-Prowse, Henderson, Sancho, Ramsdale.

As you'd also expect no Chelsea or City players involved tonight.

I’m watching Bob Ross on BBC4 and it’s put me in a sleepy mood...I’m sure watching England will have the same effect

Hope he plays well and scores a couple, it baffles me how he can't get in the 26 after his blistering end to the season, yet Rashford and Sterling who've barely netted in the last few months both make the squad, where's the incentive for guys to go out and get regular action and prove themselves, this is exactly what Jesse has done in going to West Ham instead of being a bit part player at Man Utd, and his reward is too be omitted for the summer.

So he calls up Chilwell, Shaw and Saka but plays Trippier at left back. Southgate is a moron.

Think he's resting Chilwell and Shaw after their European finals

Chilwell hasn’t joined the squad yet and Shaw is being rested after both were in European cup finals last week. Otherwise, good point.

Not sure why. A number of players are yet to join the squad so absolutely no harm in Lingard filling in. I’d rather him play and create chances for Kane and the like than play someone out of position just for the sake of it.

In fairness who else would play on the wing? The City, Chelsea and United players aren’t available and the only winger on the bench is Sancho who has been carrying an illness. Should be in the squad over the abundance of right backs.

This.

He knows the dark arts and draws nearly every foul. Some are genuine but others are hilariously soft.

Pickford punches, and he and the tall centre-forward slightly collide,
how does that turn in to a free kick?

Drawing fouls is part of the game, it has nothing to do with dark arts. He’s been targeted almost every time he’s had possession tonight. He’s very good with the ball at his feet so invariably gets fouled a lot when people try to dispossess him.

I don't see the issue with Grealish, to me he gets quite clearly fouled most times and I hate players going down under minimal contact. Excellent player

Grealish & Saka the 2 best England players tonight, but it's it bit of a damp squib, and in the last 10 minutes when Austria have suddenly woken up and decided to throw a few bodies forward England have looked vulnerable in defence, as you'd expect with a pairing of Coady and Mings.

Unfortunately Lingard hasn't managed to impress thus far, but TBF the forwards have had very little service again.

Tripps has done OK on the left, but you can tell it's not his natural position.

TAA looks off form, which indeed he is, and apart from that good run in the opening seconds he's been really quiet on that side, but then most of England's best attacks have come down the left, and that looks the most likely outlet for a goal or chance to be created.

The funny thing is that for all his "gamesmanship" nothing good has actually come of it.
So I would ask him to stay on his feet and actually go past someone.

Rolling around squealing like a pig is simulation, it may be a part of the game but it is not in the spirit or the laws of the game. Protecting the ball so that the only way for a player to dispossess you is to foul you is one of the very basic fundamentals of the game. If that’s not acceptable to you then you’re watching the wrong sport.

Wouldn’t get away with being fouled? FWIW he simulates far less than Ashley Barnes who seems to get away with it.

It wasn’t gamesmanship though. He was intentionally fouled on a number of occasions. One of their players was booked as a result of the persistent fouling.

The one I was specifically referring to (at the time I made my post) he wasn’t even touched. Literally dived over the the Austrian player’s legs.

You say that people wouldn’t moan if he played for Burnley but by the same token I bet those on the other side of the fence would moan if he wasn’t English.

But does he ever actually go past anyone without getting fouled?

Was that the one on the left hand side where he knocked it past the player who slid in late? If so he was cleaned out.

It has nothing to do with him being English for me. I just watched 45 minutes where a player was constantly kicked. Criticising him for being on the end of those kicks is just ridiculous.
