I believe it is a reference to pop star Cher as she recently part funded a private space mission for a scientific study satellite. Cher's Rocket.

My company pension pot is quite important to me having just retired aged 61. It took a dip last Friday but is now over £1000 better than it was last Tuesday.
I'm happy to keep this panic going!

The FTSE250, of British companies, whilst slightly higher today was down 8% after the result.

Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!
It doesn't matter much about these numbers...day to day movements aren't really going to affect the Average Joe on a day to day basis. It is the medium to long term trends which matter..Markets have always gone up or down, and they always will.
We don't need a daily running commentary on here....please cut the propaganda cr@p out whichever side you are on.
The £ took a big fall the day the Brexit result came out..(as I said then, and others have said since this is not necessarily a bad thing in terms of cheaper exports, therefore more jobs, more earnings, more spending..Investment, Business and Consumer confidence..growth and so on). All of these things may happen and if they don't immediately, they will eventually.Part of the reason the £ fell so far in the first 36 hours is all those 'city experts' and spivs in pinstripe suits had bought billions of pounds in the run up to the Referendum thinking the vote was a foregone conclusion and got their fingers badly burnt. They backed the wrong un in a two horse race..these are people we are supposed to look up to and listen to. The falling £ back then was used as a stick to beat the 'Leave' camp with. I didn't see much honest explanation of that stuff on here a week ago so I might as well do it now. The £ will move to it's par value in the medium term and we will all wonder what this fuss was about.
- a quick word about that ( now found out charlatan) Osborne.
1) any sign yet of those punitive income taxes that he bullied and threatened us with before the vote?
- no didn't think so.
2) have I really just seen a headline saying that he is abandoning either his public finance targets for 2020 OR his attempts to balance the Budget in the same year?
What a surprise.
Let me guess what he is blaming his revised numbers on...snooze
He has kocked up badly the arrogant nasty sh**, may his demise be speedy and prolonged.
The best time to examine the wisdom of 'Brexit' is 2..5.. 10 years from now and beyond. Not this weekend.
(that's if the pretty strong result is allowed to stand...I have seen some disgusting stuff in the last few days about throwing the result out, and having another Referendum... yeah let's keep having them until we get the 'right' result in this wonderful democracy of ours that we boast about to the rest of the world..)

Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!
The stock market bounced because it's now priced in an interest rate fall flagged by Carney in his speech. The early ( non public) indications are not good. The uncertainty has already started to bite in the housing market and consumer spending. Big projects are being cancelled or delayed and all the big investors are sitting on their hands. Businesses have also put all but non essential recruitment on hold. Carney is dropping rates to almost zero because he knows we will back in recession soon and he's right I'm afraid. A complete own goal by the politicians.

Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!
This recession was avoidable and there is real concern that it could last a while.
Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!
I'm far from convinced cutting interest rates will have the desired effect on the economy. Borrowing costs are already very low and banks will be reluctant to pass on lower interest rates because their margins will just get squeezed more. Lower interest rates also mean weaker sterling and, with a large current account deficit, we'll just import inflation. There is a real risk of stagflation, whereby the economy stops growing but costs keep rising.Ilkley claret wrote:This recession was avoidable and there is real concern that it could last a while.

Government bond markets aren't awful. Gilt yields keep falling which means prices are rising. Risk to owning govvies is that interest rates rise and prices fall.brigante wrote:Not necessarily at the minute, the bond markets are awful. Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!
Some good comments:
Hampstead - I agree Osborne cannot call emergency budget. When new PM is appointed - I favour Theresa May - Osborne will not be Chancellor any longer. Of course, he was wrong to call "project fear" pre-referendum.
IT - I agree, to great extent with Independent analysis. I think I said somewhere else that "group think" was why there were strongly negative predictions pre-ref. And, when vote was "brexit" the markets - as they often do - didn't think, they panic, to prove their earlier comments correct.
I've also seen a lot of the "city boys" (and a few "girls") in my working life. We shouldn't fear them - they aren't necessarily as clever as they think. (sub-prime mortgages, anyone?).
Give everything time. The way the referendum has gone may be good for all of us, whichever way we voted. I'm already surprised by how it is changing politics. If we can "find what unites us, rather than divides us" the changes will all be for the better and we will be in the best place.
I had my drinks with ex-colleagues this week: 4 Italians, 2 Swedes, 1 Indian, 2 Africans, 1 Bermudan and a few Brits - by heritage and/or first generation and/or EU workers. All great friends. That's how I like it.

Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!
This thread is as daft as the merchant of doom stories we had for two-and-a-half days after Brexit.
Brexit in itself is neither good nor bad. It's what we make of it.
We've left a bureaucratic disaster which is tied to the monstrous single currency of the Euro. We've also left a political club that came with certain perks.
We need to renegotiate the best of the perks we had but more importantly than that we need to engage in more and more trade with the rest of the world.
The possibilities and opportunities for more trade outside the EU are enormous and we are fully unshackled from the awful Euro project. But it will only be as successful as we -as a nation- make it.
Carpe Diem.

If intelligence was all you needed to run a political party then Michael Foot would have been elected.
If politicals was a simple case of "sorting all the problems out" we wouldn't need political party(s).

My point was that politics isn't about simple problem solving: It's about making difficult judgment calls and having the skills needs to sell your vision to the public, implement it and explain what you're doing whilst retaining popularity, not taking your eye off the ball in case of other problems and also dismissing/considering the opposition at the same time.
Ie. It's tricky.
If politics were just about putting intelligent people in charge then the Soviet Union would have worked a treat.
There are any easy answers, that's all.

I think what you're saying is that a government should pick the best ideas from a range of ideas from a range of people, and implement them using the expertise and know how of as many people as possible.

How do we go about setting up the "Bee Hole End Democrats?"
I assume we will be "democrats." Is that OK with everyone.
How will we elect a leader? Who will be in the "front bench" team?
What are prospects for BHED in elections? Shall we start locally in Burnley and build up to being a national party later?
We've got the range of views. I guess we can admit that, though we all have the "love of the Clarets" that unites us (well, nearly all of us), we also have a number of different factions which divide us. We are well on the way to being a "big, grown up" political party
I propose ME for leader, (or should that be MEE?).
OK with the rest of you?

PS: I daren't ask if we are for or against Brexit. Back to the drawing board.

Three reasons stocks have done well
1. Thin trading volumes.
2. Further stimulus - rate cut more QE predicted.
3. Hesitation on 'pressing' the article 50 button

Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!
What makes somebody put up a post that is so easily disproved? Whichever barometer of share values you look at quickly shows you that none of them are at their highest in the last year, never mind since 2011. Sorry maybe I should have put 4 exclamation marks after that statement to add some gravitas.

Re: Shares rocket to their highest since 2011!!!!
It's fair to say it's a tad shambolic so far but it's early days and time will tell. Saying I told you so won't achieve much. My parents thoughtfully informed me I was wrong to vote in manner I did. We now have to heal the wounds of a divided nation and get the best deal we can with the EU and globally for all concerned. Come back in 5 years time and say I told you so if it makes you feel better. Whoever the new PM is they're going to have their work cut out negotiating and unpicking legislation within two years. There's a huge amount of work in that and that will be a major distraction from other issues. There will be a monumental cost in that. Now we have to take it on the chin and crack on! utc

some interesting points as usual but absolutely nothing new, same regurgitated bytes, only thing I 100% agree with is that we will never know the real results until 2 - 5 10 years out, then all the warriors on here can come back and brag about how right they were. Until then it is simply adjustments to the world in general, not like the market or pound never fell before Brexit is it!!
There is a market out there, there is currency out there are commodities out there, all present an opportunity to make money even when falling. Always has been, always will be.

So am I, having just retired at 55. My final salary pension starts next week and I've just transferred the pot; £19K, over 11 years in, and £265k out but I've no idea how or why. Consequently, for whatever reason, I too am all in favour of high stock prices whoever, or whatever, causes them.JohnMac wrote:My company pension pot is quite important to me having just retired aged 61. It took a dip last Friday but is now over £1000 better than it was last Tuesday.
I'm happy to keep this panic going!
