I agree with the sentiment but he should not put an England shirt on over his formal shirt and tie

Re: Boris Johnson doesn't want booing at the final
Seemed like Denmark’s anthem was respected a lot more than the German anthem was before the Germany game, at least. But it’s a bit rich coming from someone who is as brazenly racist as johnson. He hates football too.
It was good to hear Gary Neville call out his atrocious leadership at the end of the game in comparison to Gareth Southgate’s management of England. Nice touch.

How this joker is running the country I'll never know but I shouldn't be surprised given how brainwashed our country is. As for the booing, It's a little bizarre we boo other national anthems, I have no idea why.

I'll offer no comment on politics as that's now a banned topic on this forum, however why the England fans think it's clever to boo the opposing teams national anthem I have no idea, it's infantile behaviour in the extreme, and it certainly doesn't impress me whatsoever.

it's a given that fans should show respect during national anthems.

Italy’s national anthem is worth the entrance fee alone. Incredible passion, pride and energy.
I have Italian friends. And love the place.
But I will be booing it loud and proud with thousands of others pre match. It’s part of the pantomime.

I have to admit doing the Berryman Clap when Leeds United came to the Turf in 1973.

Do fans of any other countries boo the anthems of their opponents? I've never heard it.
You must be a real oddball and/or inadequate individual to do it.

You just know the same morons who boo other national anthems will be the same ones who would get their knickers in a twist if another nation’s fans booed God Save the Queen.
Re: Boris Johnson doesn't want booing at the final
I don’t get this sudden shock at booing in football. The obviously racist stuff aside it’s all part of the pantomime of football where the opposition are the enemy for 90 minutes. I suspect that the majority who are getting their knickers in a twist have never set foot in a ground or ever really supported a team. At this rate the atmosphere at football grounds will be reduced to respectful clapping for whatever happens on the pitch.

It’s a piece of music, that’s all. And since when did ‘basic manners’ have anything to do with supporting a football team? Surely part of the ‘job’ of a supporter is to create an uncomfortable atmosphere for the opposition?yTib wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 11:21 pmi think you'll find there's no shock or twisted knickers.

Spot on. For 90 minutes it’s about doing everything within reason to make it as hostile and unwelcome as possible for the opposition. Especially in a game of this magnitude.martin_p wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 11:14 pmI don’t get this sudden shock at booing in football. But it’s also part of the entertainment. Pantomime as we both said.
Before and after the game will have a beer and craic with any of the opposition.

Well if your only argument is ‘good manners’ you’re right I don’t get it. Why’s it any different, for example, to booing while the opposition teams names are being read out?

Re: Boris Johnson doesn't want booing at the final
It’s a piece of music that often represents the history of a country and may make reference to the proud historic events of the country and its people. I just find it really distasteful and disrespectful to boo as the players are given their a short period of time to bask in the pride of representing their nation.
And I don’t think this gives any kind of competitive edge to the booing nation. I’ve seen a few perplexed reactions from opposition players when their anthem is being booed, and it looks like they’re thinking ‘what a bunch of pricks’. If anything I suspect it will give them more motivation to beat us.

One nations proud history is often another nations defeat, repression or suffering. Do you support England fans singing ‘two world wars and one world cup’ and the media’s constant war references when playing the Germans? It’s all part of our proud history.

Re: Boris Johnson doesn't want booing at the final
Not keen on the booing of national anthems but nothing wrong with booing opposing players. Some seemed to get upset over the booing of German players. It happens week week out in the Premier League.

Re: Boris Johnson doesn't want booing at the final
You don’t think defeating nazism is something to have pride in?
But anyway, my point was in reply to the notion that we should respect other countries anthems because they reflect their proud history. That’s often a morally debatable history and you need look no further than our own anthem for that.
Re: Boris Johnson doesn't want booing at the final
But what’s the difference between booing a piece of music representing a nation and footballers representing a nation?

you yourself admitted there is a line to be drawn. your example is racism. well i draw the line at xenophobia. your arbitrary limit is valid but mine isn't?
a national anthem has nothing to do with football. it is about identity. it should certainly not be part of your pantomime.

They are both agents of the enemy, however footballers can hear the booing whereas the music cannot.

Re: Boris Johnson doesn't want booing at the final
Of course I don't support England fans singing songs like that, and references to war are obviously distasteful. I don't care a jot for our national anthem, but if a stadium full of people were to boo it when it was played I would see that as an act of disrespect against the country. It wouldn't upset or offend me, but I'd think that the people who were booing it were morons. Which is what other nationalities seem to think of our booing fans from what I've read across social media. I don't care about other people looking moronic, but unfortunately I'm tarred by the same brush through association.
You've got to ask yourself why we seem to be the only country whose fans do this.

I too find it a little embarrassing, childish and disrespectful. For all those speaking of conquest, there are others that celebrate their nations liberation. For some nations the anthem is as important to them as Old Glory is to an American. Give it to the players, the staff and the fans but the nation?
