Best Day’s Fishing

Post by Holmeclaret » Fri Aug 20, 2021 10:28 am

What’s the best day’s fishing or the best fish you’ve ever caught? Mine was at a tiny river called the Hollbeck near Gilling East in North Yorkshire as a kid of 12 with a cheap Cockers rod, a cork float and worms. I caught six beautiful grayling in about two hours. I’ve caught more and bigger fish but for sheer excitement it was the best ever.

Spinning for mackerel off the rocks in beautiful north west Scotland. Caught a few and had a Basking Shark surface right in front of me and a pod of dolphins breaking the surface no more than 50 yards away. Happy days.

Undoubtedly one day offshore Nigeria. Caught several Barracuda and Red Snapper in a couple of hours. Weather conditions were perfect and they were taking the bait. Had a great chunk of Snapper tail for dinner. Beautiful.

A drift boat down the Clinch river in Tennessee. Fly fishing for wild rainbows. Caught quite a few but the beautiful surroundings and great company made for a special day.

Special mention to the day I caught a sailfish off Aruba. Exhausting work but the fish was a beauty.

A drift boat down a river in Tennessee. It sounds amazing and like something out of Tom Sawyer, Spanish moss, mint juleps and all.

Many years ago on the River Aller in Germany. The day after a poor result in a match I returned to the same peg with my Wife and Kids so they could picnic.

Loose feeding a small handball of maggots a cast I caught 10 quality Roach and 95 Chub to about 3lbs in 3 hours.

I knew it was a good area the day before but people were lumping in groundbait in melon sized bombs and frightened everything away. :?

My dad catching the first fish out of the pond he’s put in. It was like he was a schoolboy again. Worth every penny to walk out of your bedroom and onto your own fishing swim.

Fished the Almelo canal in Holland in the BAOR champs…. The canal was that wide, I was fishing the feeder out at 40 yds and I was still on the near shelf. Container ships travelling on it. Great weekend overall.

River Weser in Hameln…. There was a power station that pumped out slower warmer water into the main flow…. Caught my first Barbel there. What a fish that is. Only 6.5lb but I would’ve sworn it was double figures when I hooked it. Went off like a torpedo. Another great weekend.

Some great fishing stories. I no longer live in the Burnley area but as a small child I used to fish the Calder in Cliviger. It was bright orange, of course, and my North Yorks relatives refused to believe that anything could live in it. I saw it flowing clear a few years ago but I understand that it’s back to its original colour.
Another great fishing experience that comes to mind is a time I was lucky enough to fish for bass near Parry Sound Ontario. You couldn’t describe the area as a wilderness but it’s as close as I’ve got to one. Fantastic fighting fish and amazing scenery. Gin clear water surrounded by mile after mile of unspoilt forest.

My joint equal best carp at 17.5lbs, one from Foulridge, one from Rowley just up behind Turf Moor. Best experience catching 6 Sea trout on the fly on the River Liddle in south Scotland in The dark just after midnight.

I’ve been lucky enough to fish Sanibel island at least once a year for the last 25 years & caught some fantastic fish but shark fishing there is fantastic, even better when using carp rods & 30lb braid & taking Blacktips to 7ft on live baits from the beach.http://www.uptheclarets.com/messageboar ... w&id=21440

Not a pretty fish the catfish but I once had a plate of it fried in breadcrumbs with a Cajun chilli sauce in a shack in New Orleans and it was about the best fish I’ve ever had.

I really hate fishing no doubt about it .
Now somehow have gone fishing 3 times the first two were somewhere around Burnley and never caught anything . I was visiting a friend in the far north of Sweden and was told we were going fishing , now said i didn't want to do it but i was given a small stick and a line and sat there like a plank on a rowing boat . Now boom something took the bait and i caught two fish at the same time .
I swore i would never going fishing again as i would never beat that moment , hey that was over 30 years ago and i have never gone fishing since .
