Don Everly
Sadly died aged 84. One of the Everly brothers with Phil, very successful in late 50s. RIP

Cathy's Clown is the one song I remember about them most but a string of hits late 50s and early 60s

Re: Don Everly
I was only thinking of Don Everly a couple of days ago. I was watching some Everly Bros videos on U tube and reminiscing how good they were, perhaps the greatest harmonising rock and rollers ever. I saw them live in 1963, I think it was, they were fabulous and their influence was far reaching.....the Beatles, the Hollies, Simon and Garfunkel etc. Another of my teen idols has left us, there’s very few left. RIP Don. You have left a musical legacy to be enjoyed by millions.

Re: Don Everly
A love/ hate relationship with brother Phil for many years but they did get back together which enabled me to see them in Preston. So talented and perhaps the only time the word 'goofed' has appeared in the lyrics of a pop song. RIP, Don.
Re: Don Everly
A few years ago my brother and his wife went to Amsterdam to see Simon and Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers were on the bill my brother was blown away with their perfomance. As Vino blanco said about the harmonies and it appears they were just as good some 10 years ago, RIP.

Certainly one of the first anthems I heard belting out over the radio and juke boxes when I was a kid, Beetles I think had some of the Everlys melodies about them as well for some of their tracks.

Re: Don Everly
You'll gather from my user name that I'm a big fan...I have been since I was 13 years old .This is a bad day for me .With his brother Phil arguably one of the best harmony singing duos of all time and a massive influence on so many successful acts .When Phil passed on it wasn't so much of a shock because we knew he was very ill but I hadn't heard that Don had any health problems .As many have acknowledged including Paul Simon and Keith Richard ,not only was he a good song-writer he was one of the finest rhythm-lead guitarists ever..just listen to some of his opening riffs .RIP Don.

Re: Don Everly
Sad day !
Of the major talents of the early Rock ( or Rock and Roll ) era, I can think of only Jerry Lee Lewis and Dion DiMucci ( Dion & the Belmonts ) who are still with us ..... I stand to be corrected, of course ..

Sad news "Cathy's Clown" was no1 for 7 weeks. One of my all time favourite songs. They made some great records. I saw them in that town we don't mention when they were getting on a bit and though they put on a great show I don't think they were on speaking terms with each other. RIP Don.

Re: Don Everly
Clarets4me, I suppose you could argue, some of the early English rock and rollers are still with us: Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde, Tommy Steele are still with us. Not the same, I know, but they were there in the same era.

Re: Don Everly
I’ve come up with a couple of others who made rock and roll records in the 50s and are still with us....Freddie Cannon with hits like Tallahassee Lassie and Way Down Yonder in New Orleans, and little miss dynamite, Brenda Lee with hits like Sweet Nuthins and Let’s Jump the Broomstick.

Re: Don Everly
Remember it being played on The Turf 1962, my first season ticket year. It'd been out for a year or two but was still a top sound and always played. It's clear in my mind - late summer, sunny days on The Bee Hole End and we played Blackpool and Orient in consecutive home games, both played in white and we won both 2 - nil. I thought that was the score we'd always get!ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Aug 22, 2021 12:14 pmCathy's Clown is the one song I remember about them most but a string of hits late 50s and early 60s

Re: Don Everly
Have them in the car even now for when I’m in the mood for Crying in the Rain, Temptation, wake up Little Susie etc.
R.I.P. Don, sure Phil has guitar at the ready.

Re: Don Everly
I remember playing their songs on the old Dansette. Saw them in Manchester in 2005 as guests of Simon and Garfunkel. S&G would say that their Tom and Jerry act was heavily influenced by the Everlys

Can you think of any songs that use the phrase "gee whizz"?Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sun Aug 22, 2021 12:47 pmA love/ hate relationship with brother Phil for many years but they did get back together which enabled me to see them in Preston. Brenda Lee still alive after having an awful childhood and remember her having a very distinctive voice.
