Lead by 8. No wickets down.

Great days cricket.

Kohli whinged and whinged until he got the ball changed.

Yes he did, and then Burns dispatched the new one into the stands, that was my moment of the day, to nick a famous tradition of Brian Johnston's.

I can't recall the last time England dominated a day's cricket in this manner, certainly not in the test match arena anyway, and without counting any chickens quite yet, they've set themselves into a glorious position to level this series now.

India have been dreadful in every aspect of the game today, batted terribly, bowling terribly, and their attitude in the field smacks of a team already having given up the ghost in this particular test.

Century opening stand between Burns and Hameed, well played chaps. now keep going and grind them into the dust. :)

50 for Lancashire lad Hameed.

Lancs dominating over in Yorkshire.

Anderson unplayable, Buttler five victims. Hameed 50 and going.

50 for Hameed welcome back to international cricket young man, and a great riposte after his troubles last week, shows he got plenty pf character, which is important in test match cricket, you will get some low scores, but it's how you react to those disappointments, and he's shown today what he can bring at the top of the order.

Bear in mind that India were skittled out for 36 by Australia in December 2020 yet still fought back to win that Series.

This Test may be beyond recall for India but not the Series.

Oh! I certainly wouldn't rule them out of the series by any means, and you can't completely rule them out of this match yet, but it'll take a mighty turnabout to get them back into this test after day 1, England have had the day from heaven, and even in his wildest dreams Joe Root can't have imagined today would pan out as well as it has.

120-0 at the close, both openers unbeaten and well set, and already England have built up a lead of 42.

And all that after Kohli won the toss and naturally choose to bat. But since then everything has gone right for England, and terribly wrong for India.

India have been dreadful…… or England have been very good. I think the letter. The top batsman were all got out rather than giving wickets away, and England’s openers were diligent, disciplined and decisive, giving a real air of calm. I’m still worried about getting to see a full days play on Friday, but delighted to see England continue to play well.

That’s why England are probably the best team to watch in test cricket. No 2 days are ever the same

Fantastic from England. They will probably win this from here within three days but I still fully expect India to win the series being a better team man for man and more consistent.

England are missing many players so it's hard to judge, but Woakes has played some 2nd X1 cricket recently so might be in the frame for the next test.

The Oval and Old Trafford next, both have bounce which the Indians generally don't like. But Old Trafford will spin.

All to play for.

Don't necessarily agree
Think Hussain came good with his commentary today by saying the India tail is abysmal and Root got it horribly wrong at lord's
Man for man? It's very tight but in England I'd give our boys the edge

After a 2 year absence I was fortunate enough to be at Headingley yesterday to witness something you rarely see in Test cricket (a top side being blown away by England for 78 after choosing to bat first)

Great atmosphere, great weather, and a brilliant all round performance from England, only let down was the crap beer on offer at £5.40 a pint!

The one dilemma that England will have is for the last 10 years or so they have tried to fill the team with 90mph bowlers and gone away from accurate seam bowlers that England generally produced.

With the fast bowlers all injured, the 80mph dobbers produced a sublime performance yesterday, will they have to change plans?

Praying for a quiet day today, a full day of batting, with very few wickets lost. Got a box for 10 of us tomorrow, and am properly bricking it being a 1 hour wonder, and a complete lack of experience for people. Would be happy for it to be an England win very late in the day tomorrow, or after lunch on Saturday (but happy to sacrifice Western Terrace saturday tickets for an Otley run into town)

I think it lasts all 5 days myself.

Nothing much in the wicket and will get easier to bat on with the sun on it, but we don't score particular fast to force an early result.
An India will be far better 2nd time round.

Totally agree with all of that.
Assuming we don't collapse today, I expect India to be batting on the morning of day 5. Hopefully we won't have to chase too many later in the day.

Hameed gone for 68, 163/2, England want to be careful they don't throw all yesterday's hard work away, and credit to India they've bowled much better this morning.

Lead still 85 mind you, so England still in a healthy position in terms of the match, but India edging things in this session, the scoreboard has virtually come to a standstill today, and hopefully the introduction of Root will change that.

182/2 at lunch, England will be content enough with that, lead now 104, Malan & Root looking good so far. After the openers laid a strong platform, ideal test match cricket from England throughout all 4 sessions to date, in fact you could even describe it as textbook.

It's a shame one of our openers couldn't go on and make a big 100.
We need that. Not just this Test, but generally.

Yes that was a pity, but I think your being slightly picky, an opening stand of 135, and both passing 60 is a massive improvement on what's been the norm recently.

And after that good knock Hameed has surely displaced Sibley in the opening berth alongside Burns, Sibley's problem is although he could hang around for a couple of hours, the scoreboard never moved, therefore the bowlers were never under any pressure when he was facing, Hameed on the other hand was able to score as his 12 boundaries demonstrated, and this meant that Burns wasn't having to look to constantly keep the score ticking over on his own.

Only 1 innings, but if they can build up a solid opening pairing, it won't half help England going forwards.

I do agree that they do need to convert these half centuries into big tons, but the signs are encouraging with their displays here.

50 partnership between Malan and Root, and it's came in only 70 deliveries, after getting bogged down mid morning, England are now ticking along nicely.

214-2, lead of 136, new ball due soon, but this game is already slipping out of India's reach.

More often than not I would agree with you, but in this game when we are so on top and 3 and 4 have both got 50s. I'm glad they were out when they were.
Great start but they scored very slowly this morning.

Root has upped it though.

50 for Malan, following Root's 50, and all the top 4 have made half centuries now.

258-2, and England amassing a huge 1st innings lead here, now 180, and India toiling in the field, good keep em there for as long as needs be, and tire their bowlers out well the opportunity presents itself.

100 stand between this pair also, the 2nd 100 partnership of the innings.

Totally agree keep them in the field if we can, you don't often get the chance to grind your opponents into the dirt, so when you do you need to take it.

It'll demoralise India, but also give Jimmy and Co a welcome chance to put their feet up.

Shame about Malan falling bang on tea, but England still in an incredible position. lead of 220, and 7 wickets in hand.

An ideal situation for the stroke makers to come in and bag some quick runs against a tiring attack, while Root must be eyeing up yet another hundred, he's in a rich vein of form, and when your in that vein you want to capitalise on it, and plie the runs on.

A few wickets for India late in the day, but too little too late for them in this test I suspect.

423-8 at the close, and that LBW review on Robinson by Kohli to the final ball of the day sums up the test match for India, he hit it with plenty of bat.

Great knock from Root, but crucially he was supported by the rest of the top order.

And a useful cameo from Craig Overton in the closing minutes just rounded England's day off perfectly.

A lead of 345, and England may not be finished yet. I can see them batting on in the morning, and why not the Indian bowlers look dead on their feet, so give them extra work which they won't enjoy after a taxing day.

A few wickets for India late in the day, but too little too late for them in this test I suspect.

I have an awful feeling there may still be life in this game yet. Some of the highly talented Indian batsmen are due a big score. This pitch is seemingly getting flatter and more batsman friendly too, although a little spin which shouldn’t trouble the Indians.

They bat well and stick 500 on the board it’s squeaky bum time, one thing to remember too there is so much time left in this game and no issues with the weather..

I would say it’s 95% chance of victory for England,5% chance India, and the draw has now gone..
