Kicking that can further down the road again i see. Be under no illusions Dyches obstinate requirement for experience/age is going to come back and haunt us. He was poor the first time round. i don't see how signing him again helps us apart from just another body to fill the squad out with.

Pleased you are back at t'Turf.
There's a 39 year old Burnley lad not doing too badly across in Leeds today. OK, different sport. No reason why Sean Dyche's judgement on Aaron Lennon's ability to contribute to the squad should be wrong.

EDIT: Lionel Messi is also 34. Ronaldo is older. Of course, special footballers, but it seems their ages aren't a barrier to continue to perform.

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
No contract length so I assume it is on very flexible terms for both sides, probably pay as you play. If so, absolutely no harm in that.
Said this previously on another thread about him but he's always looked decent coming on as a sub to me. Not what we need to move us forward, clearly, but recall him making some good substitute appearances in his final year, causing problems with his pace/movement but also well defensively.

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
Welcome back Aaron Lennon.. Hopefully help some of the younger ones to come through and also gives us an option off the bench.. Lennon and JBG out wide for the last 30 mins of a game would free up dwight to have a more central role (An option we didn't have against brighton). Hopefully this transfer will be backed up by 2 more signings ideally Cornet and another attack minded midfielder could turn out to be a good window. Time will tell.

I'm comparing Aaron Lennon's age with some other footballers and their ages. Nothing more.
If Sean Dyche hasn't "written off" Aaron Lennon, then who am I to do so.

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
Total waste of resources. Garlick had it right by refusing to offer contracts to old washed up players.. Dyche has no imagination regarding signings at all.

The u23s must be sat there wondering 'what is the point in me being here', if we are signing past it ex-players.

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
At what point do we sign Brady again once we don’t get Cornet? Terrible signing he was poor the first time round he’s not going to have got any better at 34.
Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
He’s a squad filler.
Nothing wrong as long as we bring in another 4 or 5 players we desperately need(won’t happen)
I imagine he’s here for the cups and to fill in when we are desperate. He can come in and not embarrass himself or us which is no mean feet in the prem. I imagine he won’t cause any problems being a bench warmer either which is always an consideration with having squad players

We need to make some stopgap signings to fill out the squad. You just can’t restore our squad from where it’s got to in one window. I don’t think Lennon will start many games but he’ll certainly add to the squad depth for the next year.

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
This is the issue. I don’t think many fans at the end of last season thought the first XI was fine.
We’ve signed three players this summer. None of them are likely to start a league game unless we get injuries.
This was the summer when we needed to sign players who forced existing players down the pecking order and onto the bench. Not just more back-ups. With a week to go, we haven’t done it. At best it appears we might bring in one player capable of making a real impact from the start of games.

Shaking my head at quite a few comments on this thread, it’s all about opinions, but Lennon is a good squad player, that knows Burnley and is free. We’d only be moaning if we were stuck with no wingers for half a season due to injuries

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
This makes sense - a stopgap and a good experienced pro until we identify another target for the wing, providing we do land our main man this window this is sensible.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 7:30 pmWe need to make some stopgap signings to fill out the squad. Perhaps we will try and land Christie on a pre contract and then he arrives on a free in January?

Fancy a competition, You carry on with your selective names that can still perform at 34 & I’ll name the 1s that can’t, the winner is the 1 that can name the most players.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 7:10 pmCan't edit, wanted so add:

I’m pleased to see him back. Tells you our budget restriction last season that he was not offered terms.
Clearly he has done enough in the interim to justify his return. I look forward to seeing him showing what we’ve missed

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
What a waste of money. Simply not good enough or what was required. Yet another "workhorse" no creativity, just a body to fill a position. Telling me there's not a young right winger in Championship or even below than we could of taken a chance on?

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
First and foremost, I'll support Lennon and hope that he does well in his second stint, regardless of the fact i think his previous record suggests it unlikely.
That said, there is so much which this signing signals (rightly or wrongly):
Its very unlikely a youngster will get their Rashford / McNeil moment, where lack of players forces the manager to unearth a diamond.
It suggests the current crop of youngsters is not good enough to even command a backup place in the squad.
It doesn't lend any gravitas to the prospect that we will offer talented youngsters a route to the first team, which they might not get at other clubs.

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
On a positive I hope we no longer field two goalies on the bench, which is absurd
Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
Hope it works out for the player and the club, we now need a marquee signing and quick or I fear attendances will suffer.
Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
I find it very strange that there are people who think it's absurd. Naming two keepers on the bench when nine subs can be selected is entirely reasonable which is why there are other teams that do it too.warksclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 7:52 pmOn a positive I hope we no longer field two goalies on the bench, which is absurd

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
I've just dug out my old Robbie Blake shirt, hoping we re-sign him shortly. Signing Lennon is an awful move, I would sooner see a young lad from the reserve squads on the bench than Lennon. I hope he proves me wrong, but I know he won't.

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
I like Lennon and will support him.
I just hope he’s been brought in as 4th choice wide player with JBG moving to 3rd choice, McNeil number 1 with space for a quality player 2nd choice. (Ideally with pace)

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
34 is he well sometimes wingers adapt to their loss of speed by taking over as a full back or mid-field, Lennon seems not to have done either if I remember from his first stay with us.
Unless Dyche sees a future for him in the dressing room or as a possible coach then it’s not a signing that one can really enthuse about.

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
Not under this manager anyway. Which then begs the question..How does Dyche fit in with ALKs strategy of wanting to boost the academy and unearth more of our own players? McNeil apart (which was largely forced on him and also helped by McNeil hitting the ground running) who has he brought through in his time here? It seems we are developing players that other clubs may decide to take a gamble on..like Benson...rather than for ourselves.Darthlaw wrote: ↑Wed Aug 25, 2021 7:48 pmFirst and foremost, I'll support Lennon and hope that he does well in his second stint, regardless of the fact i think his previous record suggests it unlikely.

Well I for one think it's an absolutely sumptuous signing.
Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
I know we keep saying it but next summer is going to have to be a busy one. Not certain but think the ooc players are Lowton, Bardsley, Tarkowski, Cork, Stephens, Pieter's, Jay Rod, Barnes, Vydra and Lennon.
Even if we retain a few that's a hell of a lot of business to be done, potentially with a new manager...

Re: ARTICLE: Lennon back with the Clarets
Played about 2800 minutes for us in three years, one goal and four assists means influencing a goal every 5/6 games
Decent stats for a squad/ bench player
Also has pace to burn which helps get us up the pitch
No fee and insurance if other expected signings don’t happen
