Sean's press attitude

Post by 1914tyrone » Sat Aug 28, 2021 11:04 am

I can understand it must get a bit mundane answering the same old stuff, but I find him often antagonizing and sometimes rude. He has been at it long enough to know better.
This week's dig at that must of been nice when Johann mentioned, and the players can't read comments aren't funny or entertaining. Sometimes just odd.

I saw it as just an attempt at bringing humour to what must an arse clenchingly dull routine to have to keep going through.

It’s his sense of humour and personally I find it painful, so I don’t bother with any of the pre match stuff at all.

Yeah I agree, I find his humour awkward, one of those people you act and laugh along with but can’t wait to get away from. When he’s talking serious, I do like listening to him

Think if you speak to any neutral fan they like his earthiness and honesty. Never afraid to duck an interview or question, and that he conducts himself well with the press

I find he answers their questions literally.

Usually it's because the journo asking is a bit dumb.

After all if someone asks a stupid question, they should expect a stupid answer.

He seems to usually lighten up after his initial rebuke though and give them an answer to a question they were probably meaning .

Most pundits and other teams fans struggle to explain how dyche keeps us in the prem in the modern game and you complain about his press conferences , crying out loud give it a rest!

It’s called having a personality. You certainly wouldn’t expect most other mangers to react in the same way. This is another facet to what makes him a great manager. Probably has a laugh with Johann about the comment afterwards too which is probably good for team morale as we see on the pitch every week.

It’s the same people there most weeks and it’s almost become a sort of chat between mates. It’s nothing more than his sense of humour.

I personally think he just cannot stand to be questioned. The sarcasm he deploys is totally cringe though.

No doubt facing the media several times a week is rubbish, but they're just doing a job. A lot of managers treat them with disrespect at times.

I honestly can't find anything to criticise about his press conference yesterday. Brevity with a quick 'NO' avoids pointless speculative follow up questions.

win lose or draw all managers are expected to turn up and chat to these numb headed reporters.
There is never anything new or original to say. I think most of us would quickly lose patience with the crass questions day after sodding day. Imagine being sat in your office and someone says "Sean, there's someone from radio Lancs here to have a word with you"

I think I would find watching any manager in a press conference dull as dish water and would not bother my arse watching, as for the questions you get from the press " what formation are you going to use", FFS cop on why would you give them 24 hours notice.

One of my favourites from him was after the 2-1 defeat at Watford in 2016/17.

Hendrick sent off in first few mins, immediately went 1-0 down and then conceded a second right on half time.

Journo asked him if he thought the red card and the second goal affected the result. His one word, dead pan, answer was no.

Dyche often makes these sort of comments ... I remember him doing the same sort about Lowts, Woody, Barnes and some brilliant ones back in the day about DJ ... surely anyone can see the players must have a right laugh and shrug it off (as it should be) because Dyche still commands the respect of his players.

The ones Dyche is really taking the p!$$ out of are the Journos ... with their relentless repeated questions about transfers...

his demeanor in the pre-game ones is very different to the post match ones. Pre seems to be more local journalists or people he sees regularly and has a relationship, pure banter from both sides, the post where it's the nationals he tends to just answer the questions a little more.

I'd take Dyche long before the likes of Arteta or Pep, miserable *******

The problem now is that they are broadcast (with sound on occasions). He knows all the journos, they know him but some of the banter between them can be misinterpreted by those watching.

He’s essentially being interrogated.

The press need information. But in order to keep our hand close to our chest we need to withhold information.

It does seem rude but the press are doing their job and Sean is doing his. A bit uncomfortable to watch but he’s only being professional.

Yeah, I do wonder if the new owners might make that observation to him. I think it would be a shame if some of that was lost, I really don't enjoy the flat, boring show no interest in interviews the likes of Pep and Arteta give. There should always be a place for personality imho

It's his dry sense of humour, mixed in with his annoyance at tedious questions.

Maybe he should send one of these into his next press conference?

I think he's just trying to copy Clough's humor and using as a means to avoid slipping up.
It's a game of cat and mouse and you can't give the journos anything without articles being released twisting your words.

Contractural obligation isn't it?
As said further up, the pre-match ones are a total waste of time.
SD does try to be funny, but generally falls short on the humour side and comes over as abrupt.
TBH, I rarely bother with them now, but they are almost the same every time.

"Yes, otherwise we wouldn't have bid..."

Sums this up perfectly. What a ******* stupid question :D :D :D

Dalglish used to have a similar approach to after match interviews as Dyche does sometimes as I remember.

As said above he must get a bit bored with these interviews now.

He gets asked tedious questions, but he has to appreciate it's the journo's job.

Huge fan of SD, but wish he would stop trying to be funny and just realise the fans want a bit of info.

Surely it’s a journalists job to elicit information, not ask the same questions time and time again that they already know the answer to.

As a journalist myself, some of the questions are pathetically obvious and deserve to be treated with disdain.

First lesson in journo school - if you ask yes/no questions, you'll get yes/no answers.

I worked out our Sean long ago regarding press conferences.

He'll answer properly to the journos he likes, and the ones he doesn't like he's very off with them and quite rude.

Beardy from Radio Lancs will get a very different answer to the same sort of question as Alex James from Lancs Live will get.

It's the one thing I don't like about our Sean, when really his press conferences aren't as boring as every other manager in the Premier League.

There are definitely different tones of response, depending upon the person asking the question.

Doesn’t really sit particularly comfortably alongside the core values often professed, unless common courtesy is one that we ignore.

That is exactly right, and why it's bothered me for quite a while.

His face even changes before the question is asked from the ones he doesn't like.

It goes against everything he says about core values.
