It was his last season in league football but he had played top flight football for Newcastle, Oxford and Sheffield United. Played in the same team as Beardsley & Gascoigne at Newcastle.

He was poor for us, but I seem to remember he ended up playing a lot of games at a similar level later in his career.

I remember being delighted when Billy Whitehead pulled the ball into himself, he was a player who always gave us a rough time. Rankin I remember being more than decent at that level too and of course Crichton in goal. Mark Yates was too much of a footballer for the level we were at, he just seemed unable to deal with the physical side of our league but could certainly play.

I was at Salford University and was dating a girl who was St John’s at Old Trafford. She asked me who the Clorets were (it was a popular mint breath freshening sweet) and thought I was mad turning down a pitch side seat at Old Trafford to go to Maidstone United (I think) later that season.

Think it was a rare away win in the 93/94 play-off promotion season. I just got under the roof but got soaked on the way back to the car anyway.

We tried our best to cram under the stand but only succeeding in getting agonisingly close and had to endure the run off sluicing onto us.

Still, the win made it worthwhile.

Ah yes. Millwall and Chelsea. Both memorable for different reasons, other than collecting 3 points and opposition dismissals in both games.

I always remember Stan doing his after match interview at Millwall with sweat pouring down his face.

Exeter 82: started raining in Exeter at 9.00am, stopped at 4.35pm. Exeter then scored twice, we got one back and had another disallowed for offside when they had a player standing on the line. Got a bit lively after that. Was anyone else on here amongst those of us that got a lift back to St David’s station in a Black Maria? The police asked if anyone was going to the station….what service!

At least it was only 2 miles home.

Was told by the press that the linesman who flagged the offside had been an Exeter season ticket holder. That wouldn’t be allowed today.

I was in that van. Exeter fans thought we'd been arrested. That lift gave me the chance of a pint before our train departed in a pub across the road. The pitch was a mud bath.

Chesterfield at home last game of the 1982 season, kick off delayed, Norman Jones on the pitch with a fork trying to help the drainage. Had there not been so much at stake i don't think that game would have gone ahead. Kevin Young almost ankle deep in standing water infront of the Longside

And who can forget Exeter at home in 1987 - there is a famous picture of a sole fan stood on the Bee Hole terrace in a blizzard. I was in the CF stand and we used to sit around row Y and were getting snowed on it was that bad. A dire 0-0 game to match the dire weather.

Ah yes, forgotten about that one. The game should never have gone ahead really but they’d already opened the gates and there was a sizeable crowd. As a paranoid teenager I refused to celebrate us being champions that night as Carlisle could still take it with an eight goal win the following night.
