I think the better question is why was Cornet so cheap?

For a reported £12.8m fee is a fantastic bit of business.

Created the second most chances in the Championship behind Buendia who went for £30m this summer. Roberts is going to be a cracking player for us I sense. I’d imagine we might not see him for a month or two yet though.

12mths left on his contract.
Job done, minimal fuss, club should be applauded for that one.

Re: Why was Roberts so cheap
Thats impressive-suggests to me he is good at getting to the byline on the right and getting the ball into the penalty area.Something we have sadly lacked for a few years. For tough away games can see us going 451, with Cornet, Brownhill, Westwood, Roberts in midfield and McNeil playing behind Wood. We played it a lot the year we finished 7th with either Defour or Hendrick playing behind Wood
Re: Why was Roberts so cheap
Yes he is someone who bombs up and down the right and enjoys getting to the byline to whip crosses in. Agree with the 4-4-1-1 which is something I’d also like to see tried now we have the options available.warksclaret wrote: ↑Thu Sep 02, 2021 9:18 amThats impressive-suggests to me he is good at getting to the byline on the right and getting the ball into the penalty area.Something we have sadly lacked for a few years. For tough away games can see us going 451, with Cornet, Brownhill, Westwood, Roberts in midfield and McNeil playing behind Wood. Re: Why was Roberts so cheap
Roberts was a player I wanted and I was surprised that his fee was quite as low as that, but it highlights exactly why we should still be shopping in the Championship for clever deals.

On the surface it’s a lot of money for a 3rd choice right back for this season. He can play right midfield though and I think that’s where he’ll get his opportunities this year

Westwood, Brownhill, Cork, Pope, Taylor, Wood, Barnes, Pieters,JBG, Bardsley-I believe all were from the Championship and provided good service and good value to our club

I think Cornet will play RM, but I’d be astonished if Roberts is 3rd choice RB, even now. Think he’ll get his chance soon enough.SalisburyClaret wrote: ↑Thu Sep 02, 2021 9:50 amOn the surface it’s a lot of money for a 3rd choice right back for this season. Re: Why was Roberts so cheap
I think that’s one thing the new owners have done well. Obviously a lot of thought and negotiations gone into getting cornet for £13 million and Roberts for £2.5 million. Gives us a very good chance of making money on them down the line. Between them £15.5m is great business. I can’t wait to see them play which is more than I have said about a new signing for years.

SD is very loyal, but the minute Lowts is injured or misses a game he will get his chance. Then he will probably take some moving and make it his position. Of course he might also play RM
Another option could be
Collins Tarks Mee
Roberts Westwood McNeil Brownhill Taylor
Wood Cornet
That would be some team

Re: Why was Roberts so cheap
This window has certainly proved that we're able to recruit good talent at reasonable prices, although we likely can't chose the timing (doubt we'd really have considered a RB priority this window but you have to take the opportunities when they arrive).
Bit of a shame we couldn't land Christie, who would also have represented excellent value, but I'm not sure in playing terms he's many levels above Dwight and JBG, so perhaps not so necessary and we'll end up with better in January.

What makes you think Christie is anywhere near the same level as Dwight McNeil?NewClaret wrote: ↑Thu Sep 02, 2021 11:20 amThis window has certainly proved that we're able to recruit good talent at reasonable prices, although we likely can't chose the timing (doubt we'd really have considered a RB priority this window but you have to take the opportunities when they arrive).

Precisely! and if Christie is so good how come no other PL teams were interested in signing him, especially considering the modest fee, he ended up at Bournemouth, which tells you a lot.

He was. But he’s been a Burnley player for nearly 4 days now so surely we could give him a go as a striker, or a centre back?

It’s funny that we’ve been crying out for this, and I quote, ‘pacy wide man’ for so long, and now we appear to have one people want to shove him into a different position.

I think he’ll obviously play on the wing where we’ve bought him to play. But I don’t think him playing up front is out of the question. He has played there before.

It’s a full MOT, usually involves going to 2-3 different places for various tests, scans etc
People would be amazed, but in most cases it’s a multi million pound asset so it’s understandable

It's quite humorous to think that 2.5m would be spent without some sort of reassurances on current health.

He's versatile. He's played LB, both wings and as a striker. I think he'll play RW but it wouldn't surprise me at all if he was occasionally given a striker role.

I've been banging the drum for years that fullbacks are crucial to the way Sean Dyche sets us up. Mainly from an attacking point of view.
Say it quietly, we may have found our Trippier replacement.

That would be something. If he can get forward and play off another forward player as Tripps did for example with Wallace, and cross it anywhere near Tripps quality of crosses he will become a very favourite player.

Re: Why was Roberts so cheap
That was really my point - he’s not. Although I was meaning “as a 10”. My point was that if we want a 10 we have options internally to convert one of those two, and I’m not sure that Christie would be a level above them in his natural role to really justify signing him. Whereas if we now target that position for January, we may end up with a 10 that is a level above what we have/could convert.
Re: Why was Roberts so cheap
Roberts is returning from a groin injury.
It will be March before he is Dyche fit!
