Right handers need to take most of the strike against the spinner.

Some effort to be run out while you aren't trying to win a game

Malan failed to remotely look like a test batsman throughout that pitiful innings.
Can blame himself for being run out....completely rooted in his crease.

Apart from not backing up, appearing to run through treacle and putting in a terrible dive, Malan was hard done to there.

Re: England vs India - 4th Test
If you are trying to save a game on day 5, why are England even chancing a risky single, brain-dead cricket from both batsman there.
Not a bad morning session for England despite that run out.
54-2 in the 1st session doesn't suggest to me as if England really believe the win is on, but it's only another 237 needed, and assuming England bat late into the day, they should be within reach of a few lusty blows from the likes of Bairstow, Mo & CO.
Draw looks heavy favourite though, as this pitch isn't offering much for the bowlers, although India will have a new ball in 21 overs, and a swift wicket or two with the brand new cherry, will put them well on the way to victory.

Right from start of play England playing for the draw, India would likely be closer to 200 now and going for the win, because they believe, as we should, the win was there and we should have played that way, that we believe, we're left now trying to save the game.

Only way the win is on for england now is if we have wickets in hand and need 100 or less after tea against tired bowlers, but as I've said the Indians believe where we don't.

What's that I can smell? Another England batting collapse?
Re: England vs India - 4th Test
England might as well go for it as they will struggle to see out the game just by being defensive.

Take Root out and the rest average 35 or less in Test Cricket.
We need to find new batsman and give them a chance.

100-0 to 146-4. Usual England top and middle order failure on a pitch we are told is good for batting and on which the Indians put on 144 for their last 4 wickets. England have turned what was a certain draw and an outside chance of a win into a likely defeat or hanging on desperately for a draw in one session.

Don't know about tea, doubt we'll get to 3 o clock, can't believe how cheaply these batsmen give up their wickets, pathetic collapse yet again.

I've bemoaned our technique for test cricket, for years.
But this is all down to a total lack of bottle. Embarrassing, and so predictable that 2 wickets quickly leads to 6.

Re: England vs India - 4th Test
Pathetic since lunch, mind you the run out opened the door for India, and they've wasted no time gatecrashing through England's batting again.
The only batters who emerge with credit from this innings, are the openers who battled hard for 40 overs, and Root who looks like he'll make a few again.
As for the rest gutless as soon as they're put under any sort of pressure they fold like a deck of cards.
This is even worse than the final day collapse at Lords, blameless pitch, perfect start, and India without their main spinner in Ashwin, and yet they're still going to rack another convincing victory, at Lords they won by 151 runs, they might even better that at The Oval.

Re: England vs India - 4th Test
Stat from TMS Andy Zaltzman, sums up how pitiful England have been in the last hour.
England lost four wickets in seven overs. There had been 17 wickets in the previous 267 overs, and a rate of one every 16 overs.
In terms of England collapses from two down to six down, for just six runs, it is the joint-second worst since 1902, when England crumbled at Bramall Lane.

Re: England vs India - 4th Test
Taken from Ebony Rainford-Brent on the BBC text feed. I take it she hasn't seen England in test cricket for awhile if this collapse comes as a surprise to her.
I've been in shock for a little bit - I was surprised by that collapse. I thought the draw was on, England were settled in and the pitch wasn't offering much, but that spell flipped the game on its head.
New ball due, just to compound England's misery. Root & Woakes are at least battling, but defeat seems only a matter of when and not if now.
182-7 Root gone, and that will surely be that.

Re: England vs India - 4th Test
Bairstow in particular seems to be out clean bowled an awful lot in test matches, probably his lack of technique, but it's spreading to the rest now.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 06, 2021 3:21 pm7 wickets down

I never really thought the win was on for England today, but given the good track, and India's lack of Ashwin, I honestly thought we'd be able to salvage a hard fought draw.
What's telling for me is at Lords, and also at The Oval England gained a 1st innings lead, and yet in both matches India are going to win convincingly, that suggests to me England lack the mental strength when it comes to the crunch periods in the 4th and 5th days.

Re: England vs India - 4th Test
I’ve been out for a lovely tapas lunch with my granddaughter, her husband and my wife so I haven’t watched the match. Mrs Vino was surprised I was wasn’t particularly worried about missing the cricket. I told her exactly what would happen, that we would struggle to make 200. I’ve just got back to see us at 198/8: I’ve said it before on here that this is the worst batting line up, Root apart, in my 60 years of watching England test cricket.and have be mocked about it after we won a match. Root is not a test captain (why did we put them in to bat first, basic mistake?), Barstow a test batsman? Sibley, Crawley, Lawrence, bringing Moeen Ali in as Vice Captain? Give me strength!,. Anyway, mini rant over, I’m off to sit on my terrace with a couple of cold Mahous from the fridge, utc

Went to the Taperia Myramar, in Benalmádena (aSpanish taperia near the Arroyo de Miel). We had grilled asparagus and boquerones al limon (whitebait grilled in lemon) and then a selection of chicken livers, Burgos black puddings, prawns in butter and garlic, tiger mussels and aubergines in honey, all accompanied by a few ice cold beers and a bottle of Faustino dry white wine, then cafe con leche and Spanish brandy. Without a doubt, more pleasant than the cricket.

Amazed anyone thought we’d even try to have a go at getting them.
The chance of victory was lost at the weekend, the chance of a draw predictably lost today.

In my opinion the chance of victory was lost when we put them into bat on the first day. Call me old fashioned, but that’s how it goes.

Jimmy gone, 210 all out, India win by 157 runs, and go 2-1 up in the series.
There definitely has to be changes for OT, far too many of this England side are getting a free pass, and it's time a few got a wake up call.
Simply not good enough again.
Who comes in is the problem, but surely they can't do any worse then this present shower.
