Re: England v Andorra
I find it incredible that Wembley is full for this game. I would no more pay, and travel, to watch this tedious foregone conclusion than I’d buy a ST at Ewood.

Out of all our international goalkeeping options I honestly believe Pope would be the best to come on as a substitute for injured or sent off goalkeepers.
A very calm footballer.

Re: England v Andorra
Good nights work that. Southgate got to see his second string in action and ended up with a comfortable win. Bamford will be disappointed but the two centre halves and keeper will be pleased with their performances.
Looking forward to Wednesday night now

Played well as soon as they took Bamford off. Job done.

Lots of walking around out there today.
A lazy performance, IMO.
Easy win, Bamford will never lead the line at international level.
Grealish made a huge difference with effort and ability.

Re: England v Andorra
whilst I've no issue with Bamford getting a call up and he didn't do much wrong through the lack of service I'd call Ings and Antonio up long before him

Sometimes you have to look for the spaces.
DCL is a much more likely stand in for Kane, in my opinion.

Re: England v Andorra
Comfortable win in the end, but it was rather laboured until the subs, Lingard impressed, and I'm pleased Saka got on the scoresheet, hopefully that goal will allow him to move on from his penalty miss at the Euro's.
Hungary lost in Albania which was a slight surprise, great result for England that though, and even if Poland win later in San Marino, England will have a 5 point buffer ahead of the tricky trip to Poland.
Difficult to judge that performance given the wholesale changes, but victory was never in doubt.

1. Pope is a fabulous goalkeeperRileybobs wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 5:09 pmJohnstone had a very assured game when he last played for England. Southgate has seen Pope play for England on numerous occasions now, he has given him 7 caps. I expect that Southgate doesn’t feel that Pope is totally compatible with England’s style of play and is exploring other options for his number two goalkeeper. To be honest I don’t really blame him for this.
2. I really can’t see where playing the ball out from the back would be a problem for Nick if he was instructed to play that way
I’m pretty sure he can pass it 10 yards to a full back then take a return pass and play it to the other
I know where my priority would lie

I think the point being made is about NP's ability to receive the ball, not passing it.
Re: England v Andorra
Another huge scalp for Gareth.

Being a good goalkeeper is no longer the most important aspect in modern football.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 7:56 pmI think the point being made is about NP's ability to receive the ball, not passing it.
Perhaps being a good keeper might come back into fashion one day.
Likewise, being good at defending is no longer that important. Alexander Arnold is evidence of that.

I admit it. I fell asleep, until the phone rang!

Re: England v Andorra
Of course Pope is a fabulous goalkeeper. That’s why he’s probably England’s second, at worst third choice. How fantastic is it that the second best English goalkeeper plays for Burnley!! Why do some people have to take it as a personal slight that he isn’t England’s first choice?Stacky_claret wrote: ↑Sun Sep 05, 2021 7:46 pm1. Pope is a fabulous goalkeeper

As I’ve said previously, and on other occasions in the past - Nick Pope has absolutely no problem completing simple 10 yard passes, neither do I. What he isn’t good at is acting as an extra outfield player when the opposition is playing a high press. We’ve seen examples of where this is a major weakness in his game for both Burnley and England. It is so obvious that I genuinely don’t know whether people are being obtuse by ignoring this or whether they simply just tactically unaware.
I know this style of play is a relatively new fad, and I can understand why some of you don’t like it - but that is the way England play. In fact it’s the way that most of the world’s best teams play so you may as well get used to it.

Re: England v Andorra
Being good at defending is obviously important for a defender. But when you’re a full back for one of the world’s best teams it is important that you also have strong attacking attributes. TAA may be better in attack than defence, but that’s because his team spend a lot more time attacking than defending.

Re: England v Andorra
Reality check IanMcL, Andorra ranked 156th, England beat them 4-0, with essentially a 2nd string side, Moldova ranked 175th, Scotland beat them 1-0, with most of your big hitters playing, so I really don't think the Scots are in a position to mock England.
Re: England v Andorra
No issues with that Tiger. These one sided matches are not actually much fun to watch. Scotland missed loads. Woeful.
Did other things as well as 'watching' them.
