Italy set a new European record of unbeaten games

Post by tiger76 » Sun Sep 05, 2021 9:48 pm

Their 0-0 draw in Switzerland tonight, ensures the newly crowned European champions, have surpassed Spain's 35 match unbeaten streak achieved between 2007 and 2009, 36 undefeated now for the Italians, and they should have won tonight as Jorginho fluffed a penalty, almost 3 years without defeat now for Roberto Mancini's men.

And they've also equalled Brazil's 36 game unbeaten world record with that result, Brazil went 36 unbeaten between 1993 and 1996.

We could and should have beaten them, Mancini out thought Southgate he controlled the game from the touchline, he is a brilliant manager.

Yep we could and possibly should have beaten them, but they're a battle hardened outfit under RM, and as bizarre as it seems Italy not qualifying for the 2018 WC was undoubtedly a blessing in disguise for them and him, as it allowed him to remove some of the old guard, and get their exciting youngsters into the national side.

Mancini is one of the top coaches in world football, as his record aptly demonstrates, at domestic and international level.

Since we failed to beat that at home in the final, they have managed to draw at home to Bulgaria and away to the Swiss.

There are some who think the summer was a success rather than a huge missed opportunity

It can be both. Reaching our first major final since 1966 is a massive success but considering we only reach a final on average around twice a centaury of course its a huge missed opportunity especially as we had home advantage and how well we started.

If Mancini controlled the touchline so much you'd think his world record beating team might have managed to beat us in 90 or 120 mins and not need to win on the lottery that is a penalty shootout

What happened to people to go from seeing our 1990 and 1996 teams as heroes who we beaten only by the lottery of penalties to taking such a negative view of this team that has reached a Semi-final of a world cup and been a penalty shootout away from being European Champions in back to back tournements.

The crazy thing is they are a great team but might yet again fail to reach the World Cup. Despite being top, Switzerland will overtake them if they win their games in hand.

Good side though. Obviously far superior to us but do remind me of us.
