Where Were You on 9/11
This board currently has over a dozen threads on lyrics, music, films, celebrities and tv programmes.
Meanwhile, we are still in a pandemic, we have tax rises of over 10%, we pull out of Afghanistan and not one single mention of any of them.
Other forums cover these topics, why not us?
Basically, the forum is boring.
Anyway, I was in Roquetas de Mar in a bar watching it on tv thinking that it was a movie preview.

Re: Where Were You on 9/11
Preparing for college, I’d just brought a new bag, pens and pencils and so on from Asda. I was sat on my bedroom floor putting stuff together when I realised the television wasn’t showing what I was listening to before.
I remember seeing the second plane hit the other tower and the anchors didn’t seem to make a big deal about it. Amazing news coverage because no one knew what was going on with the the Pentagon attacked, the other that that crash-landed, rumours of one heading to White House, and bombs in other towers… London’s buildings being evacuated too, it was bizarre.
I went to New York a few months later. Weird experience

I was on the M1 when I found out, driving north from seeing a girlfriend. Chris Moyles was on the radio, but there was song after song with no one speaking, which I thought was odd, until Moyles came on after about half hour and explained what had happened.

Re: Where Were You on 9/11
We had just landed in Manchester from Crete the first we knew about it was the pilots announcement when we landed saying two planes had crashed into the world trade centres and there might be increased security when entering the airport. Can remember the looks on peoples faces as we all hurriedly got our bags out of the lockers and exited the plane.
Didn’t see a soul as we went through baggage and customs there was an earie silence about the place.
Didn’t realise the full horror until we got back to Burnley and turned the tv on.

Re: Where Were You on 9/11
At the time I was working in Manchester. We were all coming out of a meeting when one of the telephone staff shouted across the office the news of the first plane. She had the BBC website open on her computer and then told us another plane had hit. One of my friends had only just returned from a trip to New York and had visited the top of the twin towers. He was visibly shaken. Strange day.

On my way to florida, flight diverted to Newfoundland Canada we were told America was under a terrorist attack, we thought jesus it will be the start of world war 3, Newfoundland had more flights that day than in the previous 12 months we landed on the runway with planes parked on both sides and with not much room to land we had to sleep on the floor of a local school with locals bringing food everyday, one of the scariest and weirdest experiences of my life.
Re: Where Were You on 9/11
I was stopping at Cairan's an Irish mate's house in Nelson (sadly passed away now), I was with my children and his niece. He didn't have a TV so we knew nothing about it and we went for a walk down to Barrowford to his brother Mick's (now also sadly passed away) house. Mick wasn't big on TVs and only had a b&w with an ariel on top which you had to get just right to get a snowy picture...he proceded to turn it on to try find TellyTubbys...imagine our disappointment - no Tellytubbys to be found and four very bored children. Ironically today is another of the Irish brother's funeral and I am baby sitting the nephew, which reminds me, it's time to set off for football, he plays for Pendle Forest Raptors, must get a move on.

Just finishing a 6-2 shift at ASDA as a student. Everyone was talking about it but I didn’t realise the enormity of it until I got in the car to drive back to Trawden from Colne and turned the radio on. Turned the tv on immediately and it was all happening. Just awful.

I’d just finished loading in Whitworth. Was listening to 5 Live. Simon Mayo was interviewing someone when he broke off say he needed to check something he’d just seen on monitors. He thought it was a movie trailer. Within 10 minutes, everything had changed. Then I went into the warehouse to get them to put the news on.

At work in Manchester. Remember looking on the internet and then the 2nd plane hit. We shut the office and sent everyone home. Honestly thought it could trigger a nuclear event. A very scary day.

I was working at Yorkshire Water at the time. I remember someone coming across and saying to our team that a plane had hit one of the towers. My boss looked up from his spreadsheet and simply said, “bad day at the office” and then carried on updating his macros!

I was working at Southport College at the time. I'd been out for a walk on Lord Street and got back and someone asked if I'd seen the news, which I hadn't. I remember pulling the big portable TV we had into the middle of the resource centre for the students and staff to watch. It all seemed a bit surreal at first, I thought it was an accident at first, but when the second plane hit, you just knew it wasn't.

Been for a long walk around Carlow Bottoms and called into a corner shop for a bottle of milk. I hurriedly bought the milk through a group of people talking about something important. When I came out I said to Mrs CM that there seems to have been something on the news.
Got home and couldn’t believe what was happening.

Stood in the workshop listening to Radio 1, Chris Moyles show and it's because the tone of the show had changed that we realised something had gone on, so we stopped what we were doing and listened to it unfold.
Very surreal moment, never to be forgotten and we all agreed that it would change the world as we knew it

Came downstairs to see my mum and sister watching it on the news.
As I walked through and was told what had happened, the second plane flew in live - I thought it was the news just repeating footage of the first!

Re: Where Were You on 9/11
I worked for a bank at the time and was involved in a workshop where a notoriously ferocious "sales manager" was making attendees role play selling pension plans to customers. There was a knock on the door and someone interrupted the meeting to say "two planes have crashed into the World Trade Centre Towers in New York nd they think there might be others coming. It's a terrorist attack". There was massive hubbub for about 30 seconds when the sales manager rapped his knuckles hard on the desk and said "Right, back to business". Remember driving home that night not believing what I was hearing and then seeing the footage on TV in disbelief.
Re: Where Were You on 9/11
I was at work watching it all on the telly.
Re: Where Were You on 9/11
On a scaffold in Blackburn. My mate came back from the butty shop and said "'there's a plane gone into a tower in New York." I said "right" and carried on with what I was doing while thinking it would be a small plane with a propeller, maybe an accident.
Re: Where Were You on 9/11
In Clearwater Florida in a timeshare with friends and our families. We were on our way to a water park when we heard it on the radio. Consequently the park was closed and we spent the day watching the TV coverage.
Spooky thing is we should have been in New York that week as our friends brother lived there but there were no timeshares available. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Being at school, it was the September holidays and so me and my brothers went for a day out with my dad to go fishing.
As we arrived and started setting things up, my dad nipped back to the car and heard it on the radio, so came back and packed everything up and we went home. Being at an age where I didn't really understand what was happening, I just remember sulking in the car because we couldn't fish and had to go home.

Just finished training at gawthorpe. Pash had the radio on in the mini bus. Jumped out at the bottom of the lane. Ran home and stuck the news on. Saw the second plane hitting the second tower almost right away. Surreal moment

Was on holiday in Rethymnon Crete, didn't know anything about it until 27 hours after the event when we asked a Greek barman why they weren't showing the Champions League game, astonishing really that we didn't know and with social media now that simply wouldn't happen.

I'd just finished a 6-2 shift and I was sat in the car waiting at traffic lights when (as mentioned by someone above) Simon Mayo on 5live said reports were coming in that a plane had hit the WTC in NY.
Went home and, I suspect like a lot of people, watched in horrified fascination as the subsequent events unfolded on the box.

I went into a Burger King were I’d seen the news footage of people running in followed by the black cloud of dust going past the window. It was just business as usual where i was stood though.
There was also a push-bike chained to a lamppost covered in dust. Obviously no one came back to claim it. Everyone was just walking by it like it wasn’t there.

Fitting smoke alarms on Hassy Rd, Rawtenstall. Nice lady told us to sit down and watch it whilst she made us a brew. When we realised how serious it was we went back to the Stn and watched more.

I was working in Manchester and had gone out at lunch to look at some TVs in Kendal’s. It was nearly 2pm and I had to get back to the office but there were about 15 people gathered round the TV. At first it was being reported as though it had been an accident but then they said there was a second plane (I can’t remember if they showed footage) and that’s when it dawned that it was a terrorist incident.
I stayed for about an hour before rushing back to the office, I’m not sure I even had a mobile phone, they were just an unnecessary fad, you didn’t really need one!!

Can't actually recall exactly, but probably at work, and I vaguely recollect one of my colleagues telling me a plane had crashed into the WTC, and at first I thought he was on the wind up, however as we all now sadly now he wasn't.
I didn't see the news footage until I returned home, and that's when it really hit you the enormity of what had occurred.

Re: Where Were You on 9/11
An interesting thread. It's indeed one of those few times when I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing, such was the profound impact the event had on me. I was just a teenager at the time and had been on my paper round. I got back to the newsagents' afterwards and I remember them telling me that planes had hit the Twin Towers in New York. I remember hurrying home and just being glued to the TV the rest of the day. I remember wanting to help but feeling utterly helpless.
Re: Where Were You on 9/11
At a conference in Baltimore. Bumped into an old friend who was coming down the escalator and told me her son had called and said planes had flown into the World Trade Centre. Spent all day in the exhibition hall watching it all on big TV screens. Ended up driving home from Baltimore to Southern California two days later. Nice 3 day trip....
