That's what real competition does, upped his game even further as he's always been a good performer for us.

Re: Matt Lowton
I don't think Lowton has received much criticism on here, he was probably our best player towards the back end of last season. His lack of overlapping intent at times this season was pointed out and Roberts is the shiny new toy, reminded us all what he's capable of today.

Brilliant performance. First half flawless - hard to play any better than that

Re: Matt Lowton
I was thinking we could have saved a bit of money if, instead of buying Connor Roberts, we'd bought a cardboard cut out of Cafu to put on the bench and put a proverbial rocket up Lowton's bottom.
He was fantastic today. Well played Lowts.

It was you last week who said “God help us” when I said he was our most consistent defender this season
He has had an outstanding season and apart from the obvious exceptions at the really big clubs he is as good as the rest and cost £5 million pounds

Re: Matt Lowton
Very good not for the first time, seen him play like that a few times.
Not to take anything away from him, but I think I would have looked part decent against that shower in the first half.

Shows what proper competition for places can do. Too many of our team have known they're going to play every week no matter what.

Precisely my sentiments on another post. We now need a forward addition in January sending the message to Barnes & Rodriguez that another bad game and you are not even on the bench next week

Outstanding, but as has been mentioned, he's got a Welsh international competing for his position and it shows
Re: Matt Lowton
Would it be worth trying Roberts in front of Lowton instead of Gudmundsson?

Roberts now knows what he's up against if he wants that slot, he'll be thinking he needs to up his game, but for me a great problem to have.

He has been very good for the last 12 months.
This was up there with Cryatal Palace away though.

Re: Matt Lowton
Remember Tyrone Ming’s as a Claret and suddenly realising how good a right back can be. Never thought we could replace him and the Tripp’s appeared, Lowton is up there as one of the top right backs we have had.

Re: Matt Lowton
Lowton was indeed excellent yesterday , and when allowed to bomb forward against weaker teams his confidence really grows . Let’s not forget though we could be 6 points adrift of safety come 5pm next Saturday .
Re: Matt Lowton
To reassure you we definitely won't be six points adrift at 5pm Saturday.AlargeClaret wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 11:15 amLowton was indeed excellent yesterday , and when allowed to bomb forward against weaker teams his confidence really grows . Re: Matt Lowton
Was outstanding yesterday but he has had some very poor performances as well this season
Re: Matt Lowton
Looking at yesterdays team it was probably the best we have with our current squad and style of play. Bearing in mind that JBG is probably the weakest link, could Roberts be utilised right side of midfield instead JBG. I think he has the qualities to adapt to that position. Remember Gareth Bale started as a full back
Re: Matt Lowton
I was one of those who wanted Roberts to start as I felt that we needed something different. A bit like when Dyche dropped Hart for Heaton when he hadn’t done much wrong. I guess that’s what a dreadful run does to people. Great performance from
Lowts and the team.

Re: Matt Lowton
Firstly, if Lowton played like that every week, everyone would be deliriously happy.
Secondly, if the opposition allow our right back to have that much time and space then he’s going to bomb on and help create.
Thirdly, give it a couple of weeks and Lowton will have disappeared again.
He’s a good player when allowed to be, but not all opposition at this level will be as poor as what we saw today. Remember a few weeks ago when Jay was world class after bagging four?
I truly hope you will be saying the same things after the Chelsea game…. I’d love him to be consistent enough to keep Roberts on the bench, but having watched Lowton since his arrival, history tells me it’s only a matter of time before he throws a few in.
For now tho, and despite me wanting to see Roberts get some game time at this level, it’s his shirt to lose.

Re: Matt Lowton
You might be right Bob yesterday he was good, next Saturday he might not be,but far to many on here wanted to drop him because Roberts has a long throw.
On another note please could you OUT the posters who claimed JR was world class after hitting four against Rochdale

Re: Matt Lowton
Without checking I think that's a goal and 3 assists for Matt this season in only 10 games, that has to be considered decent by anybody's standards.
Roberts may have to bide his time before he gets his chance as long as Lowts maintains these high standards.

Re: Matt Lowton
Matt Lowton is the best defensive right back at the club ..... just about.
He is not a wing-back and has just scored only his second Premier League goal in the six years that he is been with us. He comes across as a model professional, obviously popular with his team-mates and who is usually efficient when dealing with high profile opposition wingers.
His two goals have come against very poor opposition (Brentford and Palace) when he's dared to come forward. This season he's also turned provider including assists at Southampton and yesterday' first, which is encouraging - perhaps his role has changed.
He has however not suddenly become the real deal that this trail suggests, we should give credit where its due, but not go overboard and build him up for others to knock down. We have invested in another (international class) right wing-back for a reason (replacement) but having seen them both at first hand I think that they could play very well together.
In my opinion this would give us the sort of stability and creation that Charlie and Dwight provide on the other side. Both Lowts and Connor cross well and CR has the additional speed that a counter attacking team needs (not forgetting a very useful long throw).
Worth a try ?? Perhaps not against Chelsea, although there were some interesting results yesterday where the "underdogs" attacked in style.

Strange that Roberts wasn't included. Also (I may have missed it) what has happened to Hennessey? Is he injured?
