Even the sixes and sevens seem low to me. Comms on NBCSN were glowing about his quality and his work rate.
He was ok in possession but his end product is poor , and he’s far too reliant on his left . Still a decent player for our level though

Pope 8 Crucial save at 1-0
Lowton 9 He’s got real competition now and really stepped up to the plate today
Tarky 8 Didn’t give Toney a sniff
Mee 8 Slotted back in seamlessly
Taylor 8 Played a lot more on the front foot and a great cross for Lowts goal
JBG 7 Best game in a while. Pity he didn’t finish the 1 on 1
Westwood 5 Our weakest player today for me. Gives the ball away too often and his passing wasn’t great
Brownhill 5 Runs around a lot but what he brings to the team is limited
McNeil 7 A definite improvement on recent weeks. Played with a bit of freedom and enjoys that more roaming role
Wood 7 A really good finish. Became a little anonymous 2nd half
Cornet 8 Drifts in and out of games but when you have a talent like he clearly has let him do his thing. What a finish

Vydra 6 Didn’t affect the game but by the time he came on we had gone into step back mode so struggled to see any of the ball

Very important 1st win of the season and hopefully that breeds a bit more positivity from now on.
Easy game next ;-)

Vydra would do better if we were still in attacking mode when he comes on, but as is often the case, we started defending a lead from the start of the second half. so when he did come on, he didn't get much service.

Cornet's pure class, as was evidenced when he went off. What did we do, we reverted to hoofball. I think everyone in the ground was disappointed with how the second half went, especially after that scintilating firsrt half.

Not sure, but I think the last time we scored three in the first half was also against Brentford, whilst Tarky was on strike waiting to join us.

Lowton excellent again today, but Cornet MOM for me.

Agreed, baffled by some of the ratings, thought he was excellent today.

Pope - 7 - Did what was needed. One good save.
Lowton- 8 - One assist and one goal, generally solid. Makes a difference when he knows he has someone who can take his place
Taylor - 8 - Back to what we want. Overlap, quick passing into midfield
Tarky - 9 - Never gave Toney a kick. Hope we can keep him.
Mee - 9 - As above. Maybe needed a few games out to reset.
McNeil - 8- Seeing a link up between him and Maxwel. Loads better when he moves it quick.
Brownhill - 6 - Energy is there.
Westwood- 7 - When he plays it quick to feet it makes us move,.needs to look after ball more.
JGB - 7 - His best game for a while
Cornet- 9 - Makes opposition play 10/15 yards back. Which allows us to press better. That goal is unreal on his weak foot. Any chance of us staying up to stay relies on him staying fit.
Wood - 9 - Early goal gave him confidence, back to his best running channels.

Vydra - 6 - Worked hard from the front but no real chances

From tv

Pope 7
Lowton 8
Tarks 8
Mee 7
Taylor 7
JBG 7
Brownhill 6
Westwood 6
McNeil 7
Wood 8
Cornet 8

Vydra 6

I’ve marked the central midfield two as “average” because in the second half when we needed to retain the ball and nullify Brentford they went missing as usual.

Pope - 8 - one iffy moment when he came boldly for a long throw but otherwise commanding and made a terrific, critical save at 1-0.

Lowton - 9- given the freedom of the right side in the first half and revelled in it. Wonderful pass for the first goal, took the second superbly and generally prompted with aplomb. Generally secure defensively although he did get caught a couple of times.

Taylor - 7 - raided forward to good effect on occasions, and put his body on the line when needed, although he looked worrying vulnerable when defending one on one and too many of Brentford’s attacks involved an easy ball from their right.

Tarkowski - 8 steady and composed.

Mee - 8 - good to have him back. Organised the back line and read the play well, and we looked more solid for his presence.

Westwood - 6 - he and Brownhill set the tempo in the first half and Brentford couldn’t live with it. But his ball retention, particularly in the second half, really wasn’t good enough and it stymied our momentum and ultimately led to us bringing pressure on ourselves.

Brownhill - 7 - see Westwood, except his extra athleticism made him more effective in the first half and he backed up the creative players to good effect, and his ball retention was a little better. But the same point applies - a fine win though this was, too many passes went astray, and too many poor touches put us under unnecessary pressure.

JBG - 6 - the big blemish was the two missed chances, both of which should have been taken, but his general play added an extra outlet to our game and his link play with Lowton and Wood was a feature of our first half dominance.

McNeil - 9 - there’s a real danger that we’re under appreciating this lad judging on his ratings. A hand in all 3 goals- including a lovely cross field pass to release Lowton for the first, and a sumptuous through ball for the third - and a key role in creating several other chances, an ability to keep the ball under pressure but do the pragmatic stuff when it was needed - this was outstanding stuff. Apart from carrying a touch more goal threat at times I’m not sure what people want.

Cornet - 8 he doesn’t quite look right as a second striker and he didn’t quite make the movements for the role on occasions, but he still looked to have class to burn, took his goal superbly and was Woood’s big toe away from another. He makes things happen.

Wood - 9 - he’s copped some frankly ludicrous criticism recently, but here he was back to his best, bustling around to give us a focal point, buoyed by his goal, and dreadfully unlucky with a lovely header early in the second half. And of course he took his goal emphatically.

Vydra - 6 - came on and added an extra energy , although as Brentford began to dominate possession it was harder for him to get into the game.

If this had been a boxing match, it’d have been stopped before half time with Burnley out of sight. It has to be said that Brentford were the opponents from heaven - a rigid 3-5-2 with wing backs pushed on Is a set up Dyche teams have always relished provided they are set up with a bit of pace and movement in the final third, and Brentford compounded that with some generously slapstick central defending. But as average as Brentford were, this was a day when Burnley married the good things they’ve been doing all season - aggressive pressing, good tempo, intensity - with a the cutting edge that comes of having pace on the pitch and getting good technical players in good areas. The comparison with the haunted, static performance against Norwich was stark and it wasn’t always down to a Cornet - the freedom given to JBG and McNeil to get into good areas and the willingness to get men coming onto the ball at pace meant that at times in the first half we were irresistible - particularly with McNeil showing such a range to his play

But - we still have plenty of room to improve. Even in the first half our ball retention was ordinary at times, and in the second half (whilst we were stil the better team) at times it was down right scrappy. That was to improve if we are to build on this. We can’t simply rely on McNeil to keep the ball under pressure, or Cornet or Wood to produce something from a hopeful ball. We need more composure to prevent teams getting up a head of steam against us. But for tonight, this is a good start. Keep McNeil in this form, Cornet fit and Wood scoring and we’ve got a chance.

They are low. He was so much better than the central two it’s unreal, and was head and shoulders the best footballer on the pitch. An assist of the highest quality, a glorious pass to open up the pitch for the first goal, a role in the second and a role in JBG’s chance just before half time. I’m astonished people don’t think that’s worth more. In the second half our most composed player when others were getting frantic.

As the song goes, sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.

Pope - 7 an excellent stop in the first half, other than that a routine day, a couple of miscommunication issues but alls well that ends well
Lowton 9 excellent from him and a fantastic goal to boot
Tarky 9 absolute Rolls Royce today, had Toney in his back pocket
Mee 8 solid although should have took everything out wide when they made it 3-1
Taylor 8 excellent from Charlie
JBG 7 some very good pockets of play, should really have a goal or 2 to his name but much better from him
Brownhill 6 ratted Well
Westwood 6 as above but lost it a lot too
McNeil 5 poor for me today again, looks low on confidence
Wood 8 excellent hold up play first half, linked up well and a great finish, lacked any service 2nd half
Cornet 9 could have had 2, excellent goal, and linked uo very well at times, oozes class

Took our foot of the pedal 2nd half but the game was won, it really could have been 5 first half.
Looked to be running in empty the last 20 minutes, but that's 3 games in 7 days probably took its toll

Cannot argue with 4 points from 2 games.
Onwards and upwards

UTC
5 for McNeil ? have you ever played football, his cross field pass to Lawton started the 1st goal and as someone said the pass to Cornet was spot on, what a lot of fans don't see is he uses the ball well, and brings other players into play, anyone who has played the game would see that.

Pope 9 - looked back to his best with the stop in the first half crucial
Lowton 8 - determined to hold onto his place so added 10% to his energy, a few risky issues at the back though
Tarkowski 9 - totally imperious, bet the Brentford fans loved that
Mee 8 - no mistakes today and made some brave challenges
Taylor 8 - not as exposed down his side as has happened recently
McNeil 8 - superb range of passing and set up numerous chances, felt he should have passed instead of shooting in 2nd half
Westwood 7 - a mix of great energy, probing passes and stupid errors
Brownhill 6 - probably our worst player on the day, has a lack of quality which can get noticeable
JBG 7 - would have been an outstanding game but for two very poor finishes
Wood 8 - smartly taken goal and held ball up well
Cornet 8 - looked a bit lost up there at times but his speed and finishing ability will cause countless problems

Vydra 5 - we were at headless chicken stage by then

Should have been six at half time but three was enough, and even though Brentford were there for the taking with their dodgy reserve goalkeeper making the defence a bag of nerves we still deserve huge credit. Felt we eased off 1st half between goals 1 and 2 when they had a little spell but roared back and didn’t want the half to end. Second half I though we were poor but solid enough. We need to get into the habit of playing for 90 but its a good start.

Taylor 7 Tentative start but grew into his vat game of the season
Tarks 7 solid game stuck to his job well
Mee 7 Back to his best today - good to see
Brownhill 6 battled hard hopefully a performance to build on
Westwood 6 scent game though a few needless poor passes cost him a mark
JBG 6 lively performance and used th ball well today
McNeil 7 good game and battled effectively for the full 90 minutes. Another performance to build on.
Cornet 8 very strong performance and what a shining star in this Burnley side at he moment. Wonderful skills and goal and fitness levels improving.
Wood 7 back on the goal trail with a fine opener and enjoyed the space which opened up as Cornet and McNeil plied their magic. Let’s hope he can embark on one of his goal runs.

Dyche 8 - Bold in his line up and selections today. He has continued to back his players in public and they have rewarded him today with a long overdue win. Hope this gives him the confidence to tweak his formations more regularly as today’s opponents appeared mesmerised by Burnley’s passing game in the first half today.

Superb first 45 minutes, reminded me of when we pumped Forest. Could have been 5-0 easy at half time

Pope 8 - Thought he was solid and made a crucial save at 1-0
Lowton 9 - Whether it is the thought of being dropped or not, I thought this was his best ever game in a Burnley shirt.
Tarkowski 8 - Hardly gave toney a kick
Mee 7 - solid and calm
Taylor 7 - Assist, and got up and down well. Still think he needs to get tighter to his man on occasion to avoid crosses into the box.
JBG 7 - Much improved after his last poor home showing.
Brownhill 7 - Solid
Westwood 7 - Some great through balls, some iffy ones, but at least he tries the harder passes, still think our central 2 are too similar
McNeil 8 - Needs to add goals to his play, but love his link up with Cornet
Wood 8 - Back to his best
Cornet 8 - Class act, will only get better with extra fitness.

Vydra 6 - Didn't really happen for him.

Massive massive win. Areas to improve are striker and centre mid in January. Would like to get cornet involved more, as he just makes things happen. Think we have deserved much more than our performances have merited so far this season. think we'll be on parity with a point a game pretty soon.

Oh and I think we will finish above Brentford

Pope 8 - That save low down to his right was top drawer.
Lowton 9 - That performance speaks for itself.
Tarks 8 - Not seen it mentioned or replayed on Motd but I thought he made a goal line clearance to put the icing on another very good performance.
Mee 7 - Slotted right back in.
Taylor 7 - That's the sort of delivery we want to see from him. A pin point cross for Lowton, although I'm still unsure whether he picked him out at the back post or just put it in an area with great shape on the delivery.
McNeil 9 - The sort of individual performance that justifies the entry fee. I've been very critical of him lately because we know he's git that quality. Today it was all on display. He showed wonderful feet multiole times to get out of tight situations and retained the ball superbly. Played a major part in 2 of our 3 goals. Cornet carrying such a threat can hopefully loosen the shackles on Dwight as I'd love to see more of this.
Westwood 6 - Some unfathomable passing from Westy but also did his fair share of work so it averages out.
Brownhill 7 - Lacks a but of quality/confidence but covers so much ground. Looked much better with him back in for Cork.
JBG 7 - Link up play in the first half was terrific. Shame he didn't add a goal as would have been well deserv D. His best game for us for a while. No coincidence it comes when the team plays on the deck more.
Wood 8 - Today he competed hard with defenders, won headers, ran channels effectively, stayed onside (mostly), and found a really composed finish. All those things have been lacking lately and the criticism was justified but he's shown why the manager stuck by him and deserved great credit for turning it around. Well done Chris!
Cornet 8 - What a goal. What a player. He's averaging a goal every 70 minutes for us and we have a thread ridiculing a poster for suggesting he could play as a striker. Astonishing.

Vydra 6 - Clever movement but we were surrendering some possession by the time he came on so couldn't really influence the game.

Great display today. We played some lovely stuff and beat them at their own game.

5 for McNeil ? have you ever played football, his cross field pass to Lawton started the 1st goal and as someone said the pass to Cornet was spot on, what a lot of fans don't see is he uses the ball well, and brings other players into play, anyone who has played the game would see that.
Yeah watch MOTD and extended highlights since, great ball to Cornet, probably deserved a 6 - 6.5 on reflection.
He was ok today.

Just seen the goals again and realised McNeil played a nice ball to find Lowton in space for the first goal too. So he's had a significant role in all 3 goals. He was imperious. I do recall he did lose the ball cheaply once when it went out for a throw in though Macca 👍

Pope - 8 - other than one fumble he was very assured.
Lowton - 9* - fantastic performance, showed a great range of passing and the energy he brought in the first half was a real plus.
Tarkowski - 8 - gave Toney very little. Very solid performance.
Mee - 8 - an excellent return
Taylor- 7 - good to see him get an assist. Showed great energy but a little sloppy on the ball at times.
Gudmunson - 7 - thought he used the ball really well and his diligence helped keep us very solid.
Westwood - 6 - excellent energy in the first half, just a bit sloppy when in possession unfortunately.
Brownhill - 7 - his athleticism was a key factor in us gaining the advantage in the midfield in the first half. His use of the ball was limited at times however.
McNeil - 9 - I thought his pressing in the first half really helped set the tone. Used the ball expertly also and a great assist for Cornets goal.
Wood - 7 - great strike and a little unfortunate with the header in the second half.
Cornet - 8 - thought he could have held the ball a little better at times but when he got into possession he looked very dangerous . The right decision to take him off however, we needed more aggressive pressing than he was giving us.

Vydra - 6 - good energy
