Clocks
Just wondered but does anyone else get p!ssed off when the clocks go back? Everyone seems to go by the ‘great, an extra hour in bed’ theme. I just get cheesed off at the idea of it being dark by 5pm. I loved it years ago when they kept summer time for a while. ‘68 to ‘71 I think. Brilliant.

Re: Clocks
Not sure how you can get cheesed off. We’re more on the proper GMT time zone.
There was talk of getting rid of BST (GMT+1) a few years ago

Re: Clocks
Me too. Have to get the step ladders out to change the time on the clocks and the light timers. Annoying.
Re: Clocks
Think it was put back due to us kids going off to school in't dark ... we all had little fluorescent jackets to walk to LP school in the winter of 68/69... we were going by bus to Settle High from 69 on so ditched the hated glow in't dark stuffhouseboy wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 5:13 pmJust wondered but does anyone else get p!ssed off when the clocks go back? Re: Clocks
I thought Reddy Brek solved that. Everyone glowed in the dark when you ate it according to the adverts.

I believe (not certain) that it's always been the farming community who want us to keep BST as it makes things a lot easier for them. Could be wrong.

Re: Clocks
I bought a new clock around a year ago and set it. By the time it went on the kitchen wall we'd gone into BST and I couldn't be bothered to take it off the way to adjust it. I'm delighted to confirm that the time on the clock today is correct.
Re: Clocks
Apparently its the jab now according to telly box ads
Not the nine oclock spoofed the readybrek ad ... with "make your kids glow in't dark ... buy a home near Sellafield"

Re: Clocks
Doesn't bother me, if anything it makes it easier to send my youngest to bed on time instead of her trying to tell me it isn't dark enough etc

Does it really matter?

Auto adjusting clocks are pure she devil sorcery which is particularly worrisome on Hallowe'ensuperdimitri wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 5:51 pmYou guys are still using clocks that don't auto adjust?

Re: Clocks
Just switched the TV on for the first time today and thought it was later than it actually is due to the Sky+ box not updating
Re: Clocks
Mine's the same and don't remember that being the case previously. Should the TV automatically change to the correct time or is there a way of doing it manually?

Re: Clocks
Apparently a fault at Sky which will be rectified asap !!
Re: Clocks
Lazy get, why bother with the expense of a clock when you can use a watch which has the benefit of being portableClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 5:30 pmI bought a new clock around a year ago and set it. Re: Clocks
Go into settings ...
But 99% of modern tv's will auto set time (unless you switch that facility off) certainly Smart TV's should... anything that records like my Panasonic dvb hdmi player should reset the time due to recording tv and thats over 10 years old ...
Re: Clocks
It's miserable.
It makes little difference when you are farming, as changing the time doesn't change the amount of daylight or when it starts or finishes.
Our neighbours are annoyingly and unnecessarily an hour apart. We should just move to bst and stay there.
I reckon that changing to continental time - bst - is just too much for little englanders to stomach. Its Greenwich mean time named after us as we invented it, blah, blah.

Bosscat what years were you at Settle and what House were you in, if you don’t mind me asking. I was there from 65 to 70, East House.
Re: Clocks
I forgot how to change the clock on the van, so always appreciate this time of year as it means its now back to being correct for the next 6 months.
Re: Clocks
You are aware that Europeans and even the States (albeit not all of it) change their clocks too.timshorts wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 8:02 pmIt's miserable.

69 to 74 in North House (Jennifer Walker my 1st and 2nd form Teacher) my Brother was 61 to 68 in South (the last 2 years were in the 6th form obviously)
Re: Clocks
Not sure that's quite how it works given that if you travel to say, Germany, during BST, you'd still need to put your watch forward an hour. They are ahead of us as they are further east (mainly, Spain being an exception) and that is how time zones function.timshorts wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 8:02 pmIt's miserable.

Re: Clocks
It should be done automatically by Sky. Looking at Twitter, they are aware and working on it but say there shouldn’t be any problems with recording/watching programs
My TV has updated itself, it’s the Sky box that hasn’t.Bosscat wrote: ↑Sun Oct 31, 2021 8:02 pmGo into settings ...

Re: Clocks
…. and I would prefer British Summer Time all year round (lighter nights) but I think those in the north of Scotland were against this.

Re: Clocks
According to a little research I’ve done it seems that the farming thing is a myth. The idea was first proposed by William Willett who thought that daylight was wasted at the end of the day and was better in the morning for health and well being. This was in 1907 but it was first adopted by Germany shortly after Willets death in 1916. We followed weeks later.
Ironically (and slightly weirdly) I called this thread Clocks. William Willets was the great great grandfather of Chris Martin of Coldplay. I did not know this when I started the thread.

Re: Clocks
1968 to 1971 –
In response to business and public opinion polls, Harold Wilson’s government introduced the British Standard Time trial with Britain remaining on GMT +1 hour throughout the year. Analysis of the first two years of the trial found that the resulting darker mornings in the autumn resulted in an increase in road casualties during the early hours. But this was offset by a substantially greater reduction in the number of road casualty incidents occurring in the evening. A total of 2,700 fewer people were killed or seriously injured during the first two winters of British Standard Time.
Despite the success of the trial, the House of Commons voted by 366 to 81 votes to discontinue the trial.

Re: Clocks
I don’t quite get what you are arguing about. What the hell has my hating dark nights got to do with all the above? You seem to be somehow saying I should stop hating something just because some people like it or want it. I hate the dark nights that the clocks going back brings…that’s it…that’s all there is. Deal with it.

Re: Clocks
I don't see the big deal it all evens itself up with the clocks going back & the clocks going forward seasonally, when it goes dark it's dark & when it goes light it's light.

Again your one of the problems with this forum at the moment.Someone points out a difference in opinion, an actual fact in this case, and the aggressive posts begin.houseboy wrote: ↑Mon Nov 01, 2021 12:10 amI don’t quite get what you are arguing about. What you need to deal with is I differ from your opinion, deal with that.
